We have a shoreline fridge freezer. We believe it is coming to the end of its life. Bottom of the fridge the temp goes down to 6 degrees and the freezer box freezes the product within. At the top of the door the temp is around 14 degrees which isn't good. We are now looking for a new 12v fridge freezer and a Shoreline replacement is £589 product code SKU: SL-RR298 . Is anyone aware of a similar 12 v under the counter fridge freezer which doesn't cost so much? Cheers

Two questions:- For 12V dc refrigeration compressor (eg. Danfoss BD35F) v's 240V ac (eg. whatever unit is in Curry's "ESSENTIALS C61CF13 Chest Freezer") does anyone have real facts as to which compressor is most efficient and by how much? Would Danfoss BD35F be man enough to handle a 60litres fridge? I have a serviceable Danfoss (in a working LEC fridge with poor insulation value) that I might put into a second hand freezer cabinet then use with a different temperature controller as a fridge. Alternatively I might simply buy say, Curry's 240V "ESSENTIALS C61CF13 Chest Freezer" and run it off an inverter. If I go the 240V ac route I shall adopt the control system proposed in an earlier thread by CaneyJ "Running an ac fridge efficiently" (thanks) and if I go the 12V dc route I shall use his suggestion of a digital temperature control (thanks again).

The question really is in the title. So can anyone give me their experiences in storing food and milk etc

Hi I noticed, when I took my boat out on t' cut this weekend, that my inverter beeped every now and then. It stopped too quickly for me to see what the issue was but I'm guessing it might be my 240v counter-top freezer. I'm assuming that when the freezer kicks in there is a surge of power being drawn. I've tried to find out what the wattage rating is for my freezer, but even the manufacturer's website doesn't reveal this. I've attached a photo of the label on the back of my freezer and I'm hoping that someone marvellous on this forum with better electrical knowledge than me could shed some light - what do you reckon? Cheers Adam

Hi I like cooking and I've got myself a nice new New World 55cm LPG cooker which is great. I've only been living aboard for getting on for 3 weeks and so far, I've been eating flippin' ready meals! Admittedly, we have a fantastic new chef at work and her food is irresistible so I'm actually eating well - too well! Thing is, when I was living on the boring old land, I used to cook up some seriously good meals. And, because in a former life I used to cook for between 5 and 10 people on a regular basis, I used to make meals in kind of 8-portion quantities (I know what the quantity of all ingredients is for 8 people). I did the same for the last 3 years when I was living on my own. I'd eat one, stick one in the fridge and 6 portions in the freezer. So, at any one time, I'd have maybe 12-15 meals in the freezer of 4 or 5 different cuisines - couple of spectacular chilli's, a belting curry or two, utterly delicious creamy chicken, bacon and garlic casseroles, humdinging beef in red wine and maybe a warming goulash, lasagne or hotpot. So, I want to do the same on my nb. Luckily, there was a 12v fridge on board when I bought my boat but it only has a weedy ice box. I want to go out and about on the cut quite often, so it would seem that a 12v freezer is the only option to keep my meals frozen whilst on the move. I don't really have the room (or budget!) for a standard under-counter or top-of-counter freezer, so I'm looking at maybe a Waeco portable chap like this... http://www.minicoolers.co.uk/products/waeco/cf26.htm Whilst this is still expensive, it's a couple of hundred sovs cheaper than, say, a Shoreline under-counter freezer and will probably just about have the capacity that I'm after. So, does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions either regarding this model or alternatives? Cheers Adam

Our Zanussi fridge (with ice box) has just given up the ghost (we think!) It is an integrated Model No. ZUS 6144A and is connected to 240v circuit on the boat. it was wired to a junction box which also serves other sockets which are working ok. We pulled the fridge out and put a plug directly on the cable and plugged it in - no joy - no light - no fridge noise! Also checked the fuse and that ok too. We cannot find a replacement on the Zanussi site with the same dimensions and obviously do not want to start 'hacking' the units about to get a bigger one in - not sure this would be an option anyway as the oven is one side and set of drawers the other. The boat (Aqualine) (and fridge) is 7 years old. Is this a reasonable life for this type of unit? Are we possibly missing something? Any ideas where we can get a replacement to fit in the same 'hole' would be welcome.

Can anyone recommend a small freezer (preferably 12v) for a narrowboat? I have a 12v fridge with a small freezer compartment, but I'd like a little bit more freezer space. The smaller the better. I've seen tabletop/mini ones that are about 2ft square. Something even smaller again would be perfect. I only have 240V/16A coming into the boat, so the less amps it uses the better. Very confusing when most are measured in kW/hour annually. Thanks!
