going back to the original image, ive two questions;
firstly, what do the small square patches of steel running the length of the hull tell us? would that be something to do with cutting out something such as the knees? (Although they appear a bit high for that)
secondly, I see the rubbing strakes are riveted top and bottom where as mine are riveted in the centre without the flat top edge and bottom. Would anyone know when the one method superseded the other?
And looking closer again, I now see the bow is formed from small panels of wrought iron. Lovely.
To add: maybe I should have said I have front half of a Bantock hull too
Nope.
it’s heritage not to be f###ed with.
More cost effective to have an army of officious Volunteer Lockies.
(actually it’s probably not, probably more cost effective to maintain the gates and fix’em)
We’re gonna go around in circles again with the same arguments about how boaters must pay more for the system.
It’s pretty much a stale discussion.
What’s concerning and interesting is with all price rises across the board at the moment how will it effect the ‘occasional’ boater?
It’s such an expense to part time boat. It would worry me if I were still living in a house and paying to keep a boat on a home mooring: the boat would have to go.
Are people still going to be able to afford to travel (by car or whatever) possibly several hundred miles or more to take a boat out a few times a year? And then pay the extortionate amount on diesel to go holidaying and then find pubs and restaurants are over priced too?
I don’t think so.
I reckon and predict come next year lots of part time boaters will have sold their boats to save on their out goings.
And those land lubbers that can’t afford housing will buy up them said boats to live aboard.
Must admit, I’m one of the foolish, I have no anchor or life jacket.
I rarely use a river, and then only when the river is slow and benign.
Having said that, I was on the Thames and the Kennet a few years ago when both were a bit racy.
Good fun and thinking back an anchor probably wouldn’t have been much help stopping my boat at speed, a life jacket would have been sensible though.
I’ve been thinking that for quite awhile now. (CRT and the areas of neglect aside) I think I’ve always realised it would one day be a playground for the rich.
Shame, Ive liked seeing people able to go boating on a budget.
Costs are rising rapidly. Now that things are getting tighter and tighter, I foresee lots of people selling their holiday boats
What I paid today for diesel was shocking.
Exactly
Yes, I got caught out, but sometimes you have to use an expensive marina.
if only...I bought fuel today at £1.90 per litre, domestic price, not far from triple the price a year ago.
So a tad more than 50%
£50 gets you F all now
The long winded routes, if time is on your side, are the best.
So much experience to be gained going the long way around.
It’s what a boat’s for!
Enjoy the journey. 👍
to add: by the time you’ve been up around Birmingham and down the Oxford you’ll have enough confidence to do the Thames.
You’ll have a lovely story to tell doing it.
Yep, I see

He did a full survey for me when I bought my boat. So not just the hull but the whole lot.
Very thorough.
If opting for a survey then try your best to be there when they do it.
Not because a surveyor is necessarily untrustworthy but becuase you can ask stuff.
I’m not saying stand over their shoulder watching, simply get your moneys worth and learn.
To get back on topic before it is closed, did anyone find an image of the car in the cut at Solihull?
I’d be interested to know where exactly it was dumped.
