  1. I’m with you on that, if a car isn’t essential then ditch it, great relief to get rid of mine, no need to worry now about planning to fetch car or where to leave it, It’s cost less for trains and public transport over a year than it would have on car insurance and mot,
  2. It is indeed. I spotted you on Saturday morning but no signs of life when we passed. Absent visiting family, Now back on board but travelling in opposite direction to you, with a run into Brum for Friday. I saw Song of the Waterways at Stretton Wharf the other week but didn’t spot Oats. 👍
  3. as I politely said, where as I should have said summat about arses not knowing elbows.
  4. But the Marsden flight locks are 70’ and more ? Its the broad locks that are short?
  5. Sounds like a mish mash of information, typical CRT. We need new bigger and better Blue Signs, they can take it out me extra license fee 👍
  6. Well, OP, are you fit? How do fancy chucking a trip around the BCN into the mix? 😃😃
  7. I agree, I wasn’t suggesting he go Trent but go the Pennine Route, the long route. Just had a Quick Look at Canalplanner and it’s about 120hr via Preston Brook (Marple Flight is out). 200miles and 223 locks
  8. Ooh a pub crawl lovely. yes keep a note of each one you go in. now the Rochdale or the HNC for the pubs??? there’s a dilemma, If drinking canal side or very close my first thoughts would be the HNC. But you won’t be disappointed with either. taking into account the cost of beer too, yep it might be more cost effective to put boat on truck👍 but where’s the fun in that? Best way to gain experience is go boating 😃

  10. I was thinking Gaily to start with wondering if the Lock at Gailey, which is deep, was once a staircase, At Bratch, was it a case of building new locks beside the staircase?
  11. Well, I hope Peter don’t get put off posting. It’s also been good to have a thread where there’s usually little said, certainly no squabbling, just pictures to look at.
  12. a little more information with this map drawn in 1841
  13. As Ditchcrawler says these can be an historic resource. There’s nowt stopping you starting a thread, something similar happened on the where I am thread when it started turning international, I simply started an international thread, I quite admire Peter’s stamina for keeping on posting, and I think his pictures are perhaps an important record for the future voting for stuff we’ll end up with the twee sentimental sickening photos like ‘Boats at dawn, with frost on the cabin tops and whisps of smoke from chimneys’ or ‘View over the Marina at Sunset’ or ‘Relfections in a Bridge Hole’ or….’Squirell Eating His Nuts’. But hey if that’s what folks want let ‘em have it, on another thread, 🤷‍♀️
  14. We’re at Bratch Locks, originally a staircase of three before being altered in to the three separate locks we now see with side ponds, the distinctive ‘tower’ we see is ‘139’ and recorded as an office,
  15. I’ll have to face up to Cov one day. Each time I head that way I chicken out and turn off down the Oxford or Ashby. I think I’d rather face going up to Failsworth and Rochdale.
  16. perfect! food’s never the issue, Looks fun,
  17. you can come ride shot gun for me, I’ve never moored anywhere between Hartshill and Sutton Stop or anywhere passed Sutton Stop on the Cov. where do you moor? I occasionally stop for the Polish Shop in Nuneaton but I’m soon on my way after getting my shopping. When kids we used to go Toppers for fish and chips. Dunno if it’s still going.
  18. Sadly no ☹️ ..we had a session on it before going through Harecastle. Happy Days.
