Thanks for that....good to know about the one visitor mooring on the waitrose side! I just wondered about charge for parking if you moored there...it's insinuated in the t & c that there's a charge for parki g but nothing in writing about it on the website....will see if Kev gets back on here...it's all handy info for others who find the thread. The moorings on the towpath side are ok in places but it can be a hike on and off the boat plus the bank isn't the best in some spots....however I love the weaver so any info on new developments is welcome. I too find that most t & c's are worrying when you read them....good to know it's not quite as full on as they make it seem! Cheers Gareth

That's good to know....do you happen to know if there is a charge for visitor mooring and/or car parking? It would certainly be easier to moor there if you wanted to shop in waitrose than carry the shopping round! I hope it's a bit more relaxed than the t &c's suggest! Cheers Gareth

Free Boating Events in Leicestershire next weekend!
frangar replied to pillingslock's topic in Waterway & Boat Events
Is there going be a presentation at the event from PLM to CRT of a donation say somewhere in the region of £180k? Just wondering........ Cheers Gareth -
Moisture double-glazed ports!
frangar replied to NorthwichTrader's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
Also isn't the void inbetween the glass at best a vacuum or possibly filled with an inert gas? As others have said get in touch with the suppliers and take it from there....I don't think even it you let it dry it will stay that way unless you can remove the air. Cheers Gareth -
Another nonsense topic from the dark side......Generator noise

Clicked on the link.....feel dirty now!....ah well if we happen to meet on our travels this year I may has something to talk to him about....... Thanks for that chaps Cheers Gareth -
Another nonsense topic from the dark side......Generator noise
frangar replied to frangar's topic in General Boating
I wish I knew where he got the figures from that he says are from the HSE and what they are in relation to....those db readings are pushing it for the super silent generators we use for concerts....as others have said the ambient noise is probably greater than those figures....mind you the article has kept me chuckling all morning! Does anyone know him by sight or perhaps his boat name?.....he will have a fit if I go past with the JP on song...... Cheers Gareth -
I'm now glad I got the last coat on the water tank at 6.30 this morning.....been raining here since...even makes doing jobs I have inside harder as I can't have the slide open.... Oh well as I'm working away all next week stuck indoors in the dark it's bound to be warm and sunny for the rest of you! Cheers Gareth

That only works for an inverter style generator that has a variable speed throttle though. Cheers Gareth

I've just strayed onto NBW and found this "Newsflash" http://narrowboatworld.com/index.php/news-flash/6856-hearing-at-risk Now unless the paint fumes have really got to me the part quoted from the HSE makes no sense at all.....plus if his noise meter was really reading 120db from a genny 70ft away then that must be one jet powered unit! I agree that engines and gennys etc are annoying when run at antisocial hours but reports like this really don't help....oh and if it annoyed you for the whole of Easter wouldn't you do what boats are quite good at.....and move! Oh well it made me chuckle.....another quality piece! Cheers Gareth PS I was going to paste the whole article here to save visiting the dark side but thought NBW might accuse me of stealing and passing off work as my own......

Top work.....I look forward to reading the rest of the cruise diary. Cheers Gareth

Try here http://www.tayna.co.uk/T-105-Trojan-Battery-Deep-Cycle-T105-P7253.html Used them a lot...good service and price....if you order multiples they will do deals on carriage....if you like them on Facebook you also get a discount Edited to add Hmmm I misread your post T-1275 are £199 from tayna.....I've never found cheaper than them so I do wonder about four of them for £450.....was that including or excluding VAT? Tayna prices are all inc vat Cheers Gareth

This is now much better than the Archers.....I can't wait for the next instalment!! Cheers Gareth

What sort of lighting do you have? Some of the older style filament lamps take a huge amount of power compared to modern LEDs and some boats seem to have a lot of downlighters fitted which soon add up to much more than a fridge. I agree you need some sort of monitoring especially if you are off grid liveaboards. Do you know what size the alternator is on the engine or failing that what sort of engine it is? Some older engines have very small alternators fitted that don't charge well at tickover. Cheers Gareth
-
Cor...this beats the archers anyday! I too would be interested in the outcome....I thought spill timing too as the pumps had been removed....do stick with it Junior however daunting it seems at the moment.....it will be worth it in the long run...not only will you have a better understanding of your engine but it will help you have confidence in other stuff too.....although I tinkered with my landie until I stripped my boat engine down I was wary but now I'm happy to do spanner work even if I have to take bits to someone else to machine or weld etc. Cheers Gareth

Protective coating for inside of Hull
frangar replied to Richard Batten's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance
I'm just about to use this http://www.zinga-uk.com/product-range/monoprimer Not cheap at £25 ish a litre but in theory should bond to rusty steel. I have had mixed results with various bilge paints....all seem to fail over time due to the damp environment. Time will tell if Monoprimer is any better....I have been advised to overcoat it with zinga MIO or Alfur N as a barrier coat if you want a smooth finish. Cheers Gareth -
Otherwise know as the Pillings Lock Effect....... Cheers Gareth
-
Do you mean berths for permanent moorers or visitors ones for a few hours or overnight.....if they are visitors ones do you charge at all? This sort of info is always handy for others who come across these threads as well. Cheers Gareth
-
Don't you just ram the clothes tighter into the cupboard....seems to work for us! You did used to be able to get ones that ran on butane gas cartridges.....don't know if they are still available. Cheers Gareth

A very fair point!....I take it they won't stop the gas if the reg failed with nothing being switched on? I was thinking of the very small chance of a reg failing when the gas was on at the bottle and then having HP gas leaking out past the cooker valves?...I'm not picking holes but just interested in how they work! Oh and I agree about those pigtails....I have the same thing fitted as part of a "Gaslow" gauge which screws on the end of normal pigtails. They work really well...although they did cause my BSC examiner a bit of head scratching as he hadn't seen them before...had mine fitted for a couple of years now and they are really good....very handy for connecting the spare bottles where it's tricky to get to with a spanner.....the seals seem to be lasting well although I keep meaning to get a couple of spares just in case. Cheers Gareth

I thought it helped if the regulator failed...it stops HP gas flowing and possibly causing a leak due to fittings etc not being rated for HP gas. I have heard of a few regulators failing so it might be a worthwhile idea to have....I'm not a gas person though so someone else might have a better idea. Have you checked BES for a new regulator? They seem to do both sorts. Their prices and service are very good....no connection other than a satisfied customer. Edited to add... MtB beat me! Was thinking of you as I typed! I thought someone on this forum had a regulator fail open and cause gas to escape from a cooker? I also know of another boat that had the same thing in our marina...unless something else can cause the same symptoms??....or were these people very unlucky? Cheers Gareth

Thanks for that....as I typed Runcorn I thought I might be wrong!...it's a shame they aren't used for water transport...I thought they were part of Eddie Stobarts dream of world domination?....mind you if they were to use Weston Marsh lock (?) onto the Ship Canal with any regularity then it might need to have some TLC! There was a lot of creaking and groaning when we went through and not all of it was from the CRT chaps! Cheers Gareth
-
Don't also forget that given the trend for larger alternators they also put a fair size load on the engine especially if geared correctly whatever the engine speed. Mines only 70A at 12v but it still makes the engine work harder at full load. I think the moral is use the changeover valves regularly as you never know when you might need them. Cheers Gareth
-
That's interesting....was it brush painted or sprayed? I only ask because two weeks seems quick looking at your design given masking up etc....the sign writing and decoration took 2 1/2 days alone on my boat....or was the genny just for lighting etc rather than a compressor? He does seem well priced...even though I am the owner of a shiny boat I do sometimes think it's odd how we expect a finish that would do most classic cars proud on something which is kept outdoors and comes into contact with the scenery so often. Good weather (even in a covered dock) is the key to most paint jobs I think....you need it dry but not hot. Do you know what paint he used? Cheers Gareth

Been there done that!.....I agree it was ace but as you said it takes a bit of organising if you are doing it on your own as we did .....ask away if anyone is thinking of doing the same.....it was one of the high points of my boating career! Sadly most people turn around before Runcorn though....it's worth a visit even if you don't go on the Ship Canal Cheers Gareth
