  1. Hi chaps, Just in the process of planning our summer trip with this years trip which hopefully will involve going on the Trent, Fossdyke, Chesterfield then time permitting zig zagging across the Pennines via the L & L, Huddersfield Narrow and the Rochdale before coming back to the Midlands.....however a slight problem is we need to go away to work for just over a week when we would ideally be on the tidal Trent....so looking at the options it looks like Burton Waters would be a good choice as it's also not too far to a train station.....I have emailed them about a temp mooring but haven't heard back...does the team think this is a good choice or is there somewhere else that might be as good? Looking at their website it doesn't look too geared up for 50 foot narrowboats..... Any thoughts on the tidal Trent welcome as well!...I have read a few threads on here and got the Richlow guide and waiting for the TBA charts to arrive. Cheers Gareth
  2. Another vote for Mike Carter. Cheers Gareth
  3. What bit of the Erewash?……when we went up there a few years ago a heavy gun mounted on the front deck wouldn't have been overkill on some parts….this was mainly the middle part as I recall…..but unless the local populace has changed a lot I would be a bit wary up there. Cheers Gareth PS We often boat thro city centres and other so called rough areas and the Erewash was the only place I made sure something large and heavy was to hand…..
  4. I've used Zinga with success on the galvanised trim on my landie.....some was rusty...some was ok...I just lighty abraded it then thoroughly degreased it and slapped two coats of zinga on.....three ish years later and it all looks good.... I also used it on the inside of the hull when we refitted the bathroom last year but as it's all now covered with the fit out I can't say how that's doing......one thing I would say is that even with a face mask on its a bit pokey when used in a confined space...you probably should use a full face air fed mask or similar...I was a little poorly for a while afterwards!! Cheers Gareth
  5. I trust the mods have issued warning points to those who have sworn on this thread like the rest of us have got when we were naughty......... Cheers Gareth
  6. Thanks for the pointers.....will have an investigation and emailing session over the weekend and report back on progress. Cheers Gareth
  7. Ive thought about that but with the play in the splines being the worse bit I reckoned by the time they were remachined it may be more cost and time effective just to replace the whole unit. Cheers Gareth
  8. I can have this evening! What part do you want measured? Cheers Gareth
  9. Hi Chaps If the pic posting works then below you should see a picture of the coupling between my reduction box & the props haft that goes under the back cabin floor! The unit has quite a bit of play in the splines and a bit of play in UJ's themselves so before this years travels I thought it would be prudent to replace it……however I now have a price from one of the two localish prop people and they want £175 +VAT which I think seems a little high although speaking to a petrol head friend of mine they have a very good reputation in rally and kit car circles…this might be overkill for a slow revving JP tho!….the other supplier doesn't seem to want to know about it. So my question is before I jump in and order it is does anyone know of a recommended company in the Leicester/Coventry area who might be able to supply a new unit? I don't mind paying if thats what it costs…I have had fun with poor quality UJ's on my Landie so if the new unit will last the 30 years the original has I would be happy to pay. I await a reply with baited breath! Cheers Gareth

  11. Try some POR 15 paint stripper http://www.frost.co.uk/por15-por-strip-paint-remover-us-gallon.html I've used it with a good success rate. Cheers Gareth
  12. Was only wondering about this yesterday…..thank you for the latest update…..hope it has a happy conclusion….please keep us posted as and when you hear anything. Cheers Gareth
  13. This CAV pump has just been reduced.....doesn't say what sort of Ruston it fitted...if it really has been recon then it's a good price http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/C-A-V-Reconditioned-Fuel-Pump-BPE4B65Q300-3S69-Ruston-Hornsby-/181311840667?ssPageName=ADME:X:PROI:GB:1120 Cheers Gareth
  14. Good luck…..Ive been looking for similar for a while now and failing….found a couple that have 240v ignition but although 12v ignition units are available the cookers I have found look like they will need quite a bit of pulling apart to fit. Cheers Gareth
  15. I'm afraid I've not got any real experience of morcos...the only thing I would say is that it's quite a jump from 25 to 40 psi....might be worth keeping an eye on joints and pipework just in case the extra pressure puts strain on any weak points. Cheers Gareth
  16. Ahh but at the boat museum you have to dodge the sunken boats and noise from the holiday inn aircon or find yourself with a fisherman on your front deck chucking bait on your boat....oh and find that the trip boat is blocking the passage down the locks and that random paddles have been left up or unlike I was in the summer are you now welcomed when you arrive by boat? Cheers Gareth
  17. They do both! We fitted the corner solid fuel ones to a few boats. Cheers Gareth

    jp2 starting

I reckon you might be in with a better chance with a dynastart on a JP if you lift the decompressors first then drop them once it's spinning nicely...just as you would a hand start. Cheers Gareth
  19. Uxbridge boat centre might be worth a call....I'm in the midlands! Cheers Gareth Edited to add Make sure whatever pump you get it's got the same cut out pressure as the original one.....ParMax' can be either 25psi or 40psi....40psi might be a bit high if you have a calorifier
  20. I think the ports are the same so you should be able to just use the old ones....it's a bit bigger diameter so if your pipework isn't flexible that might be a problem....it also has a slightly higher current draw which might be a problem if the wiring is borderline. Cheers Gareth
  21. O Or a ParMax 4..... Bigger motor and pump means less runtime so it all runs cooler and no lack of flow or pressure when someone fills the kettle and someone else is in the shower! Cheers Gareth
  22. Gas might cost more in fuel but it's a lot less in repairs to failed air motors/glow plugs etc!.....they also have much lower electrical demands which means less engine running to keep batteries topped up if you are off grid.....I wouldn't have gas as my sole heating source for either water or radiators but in conjunction with a solid fuel stove it works well for me and has done for the last 20 odd years! Cheers Gareth
  23. Been living aboard for over 20 years...still loving it. As others have said go for it. Although I'm only in my mid 40's now I too have had far too many friends pop off this mortal coil before their time....if you want to do something just do it. As my granny said you will regret more what you don't do! Cheers Gareth
  24. Funny how when it's near london and a few posh Tory voters are about to get soggy that the army etc is mobilised immediately..... Cheers Gareth
