  1. Id say 12psi was a little low.....15-20psi is preferable...mine runs at 20psi on SAE30 hot or cold....I did used to run on SAE20 but these hotter summers meant that it was running at 15psi on a river....so changed the grade. My main concern would be if there is wear in the mains on the crankshaft as JP2's...especially marinised industrial units that dont have a forged crank...can break crankshafts due to movement. One other possibility is that the oil pressure relief valve hasn't been set properly but be wary adjusting this as while you might get a higher pressure reading it wont solve the issue of worn bearings.... All this is of course dependent on the pressure gauge being correct....and depending on the scale of the gauge that might not be the case.
  2. They may have meant that you can now only apply for a EoG mooring if you own the land you want to moor alongside. It’s been this way for a while. So for instance you can’t apply for a EoG mooring when a farmer owns the field. We had to supply land registry details when we applied for our EoG.
  3. That’s looking beautiful! Well done!!
  4. I believe it’s become popular after that chap on the telly with a boat started using the phrase….it grates on me every time I hear it.
  5. And cranking a lock…..🙄
  6. I was about to post similar….but maybe not quite so diplomatically……😆…it’s even worse than boatman’s cabin……
  7. I’m not keen on too much petcoke. It has a habit of burning the riddle plate bars out on my squirrel.
  8. I really dont think you are understanding this at all
  9. Maybe...or maybe not....thats why I want a valuation!...there are many variables when valuing a boat.... This is why I wanted to check.....I also increased my contents value after talking both to my surveyor and suffering a house burglary....once you start adding replacements up even of normal clothes the cost is quite alarming!
  10. The fact is that after 30 years the boat is not the same value as I paid for it…and with narrow boats unlike production boats it’s not just a case of looking up what others sell for especially when you take into consideration that I have a vintage engine/back cabin etc….not that easy to find a comparison. I don’t want to be over insured but equally I don’t want to be out of pocket should the worst happen. My present insurer is ok with my valuation but having been with them a number of years it seems any new insurance requires both a recent survey and a valuation.
  11. Quite. And looking at what I paid for my boat 30 years ago I couldn’t replace it with a boat in similar age and condition etc. for the money I paid then. Many factors affect boat values…much like classic cars…prices can rise and fall depending on what the market is like at the time….not many years ago a Mk 3 escort was worth little more than scrap…now look at the prices.
  12. My surveyor has suggested that a broker is far more in touch with market values than they would be. Also other insurers I have approached have suggested that a brokers valuation on headed notepaper (!!) would be ideal. It’s just a question of getting a broker to agree this…last time I tried they didn’t want to commit until I signed the sale paperwork…which even if I was thinking of selling I think I’d want a value before I committed. I actually wouldn’t mind paying for the service if it was good. The reason I might need a valuation is the poor service I seem to be getting from GJW not to mention the vastly increased premium.
  13. Just wondering if anyone has had success with getting a broker or similar to carry out a valuation of their boat and put it in writing? I need one for insurance purposes and having owned the boat for 30 years it seems most insurers will only insure for the purchase price which is probably not correct should I wish replace it if the worst happens.
  14. Look at houseful. Sadly now part of CPL but better pricing.
  15. I have an idea for a filler cap that would have the same fitting as a locking wheel nut for a car….it would fit flush and I’m sure could be relatively easily made on a CNC miller….It wouldn’t be impossible to remove but like all things would be a deterrent…and maybe could be made out of a brass blank to keep us traditionalists happy. If anyone with the necessary kit fancied having a go I’d be happy to be the test person!
