  8. if you do manage to get up the Teme you will only get as far as Powick weir which is near the chimney you can see which was the first commercial hydroelectric power station to be built in Britain in 1894. The Ludlow weirs were navigation Flash Lock weirs until the railways came to the Teme valley. Sailing Trows from the Severn worked up the river with wheat for the mills from Gloucester returning with flour for the villages and iron bar from Downton for blacksmiths downstream. An 1820's painting shows the old Dinham Bridge with four square rigged trows unloading at Dinham Mill now Mr Underwoods lovely restaurant and other trows at the opposite bank and under full sail up to the Downton Gorge.

  13. Tomorrow Worcester canoe club are holding the " Worcester Ring Challenge" which is a canoe race from Worcester down to Diglis up the W&B canal, down the junction and barge canal then down the Severn back to Worcester, The record so far for a single Kayak is 3hours 9 minutes. This will be a good memorial to Dad who would have been 86 on the 10th July (Tomorrow), I used to be a canoeist till I got MS and would have to loved to be taking part, as back in the 70's I paddled many of the newly restored sections of the canal and spent weekends covered in mud as teenage on work parties in the early days of restoration.
  14. Does anyone know who painted this can, Dad won it in a raffle at an IWA meeting in Birmingham in the early 60's

  16. "Those which spent some period as a conversion and subsequently deconverted would form a separate group, but it would be interesting to see a comprehensive list." Stewart and Lloyds tug Vesta would fall into that group, Dad put a cabin on it in the 60's and it was converted back in the 80's
  17. The cabin was put on Vesta in the early 60's and I think removed by Mike Woodhouse in the early 80's? (he was featured in the waterworld series on ITV) he had a 1936 Rolls Royce Vesta on her way to Stratford in 1964 to meet the Queen Mother. I think Alan Smith and Dad designed the window shutters. Vesta in Bancroft Basin at the opening of the Stratford canal This was Dad's prize for the best conversion at the Stratford Rally, it is still hanging on the wall at his house.
