  1. http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2011/10/07/how-500000-whitchurch-canal-revamp-could-look/ How £500,000 Whitchurch canal revamp could look This is how a £500,000 revamp of a major section of the Shropshire Union Canal could look. Members of the Whitchurch Waterway Trust have taken the wraps off their proposals to extend the canal and create a new basin with moorings. The project would bring canal boat users nearer to the town centre and become a tourist attraction. Plans were available for the public to comment on at the town’s Blackberry Fair at the weekend. Trust members said the scheme was met with a very positive response from residents. A presentation of the project was also put to Whitchurch Town Council last week and trust members are hoping the authority will support them with funding. David Torrens, trust member, said: “We were very happy with the positive response we got at the weekend’s event. “They said they were happy to see something was being done and thought the project was very achievable. “Our next step is to put together comments we have received and then we will have to look at the design brief. “We hope to make a planning application soon. I am sure the council will help us as much as they can.” Trust members estimate construction costs of the basin could reach about £475,000 l. Comments and suggestions the trust has received so far about the project include a request to consider measures of controlling litter, adjust the shape slightly to make boat manoeuvring easier and provide facilities for moored boats. The scheme won the backing of trust members at a meeting held last year. Before the meeting members had five potential schemes to consider. Comments about the proposals can also be sent by email to comments@whitchurchwaterway.org.uk or by post to Hon-Secretary, Whitchurch Waterway Trust, Chemistry Farm, Whitchurch SY13 1BZ. 2. Had 1000watt quasi sine inverter fitted linked through a Sterling manual changeover switch. Everything worked fine but inverter was just too small for our microwave so have swapped it for a 1500watt pure sine jobby. Now when I switch over to the inverter my Shoreline galvonic isolator pulses the 2 red LED's indicating an AC fault! If I turn off the cross over switch and run the appliance directly there appears to be no problem so my immediate thought of 'duff inverter' doesn't ring true. Checked through the AC wiring with Avo and cannot find any earth leakage. Refitting the original inverter, everything works as it should. Has anybody had this problem or can suggest a solution?

  3. Perhaps they could get the 'Monty Restoration Crew' to do the Whitchurch Arm once they've completed the Monty restoration... that would be in 2044 or so. I'm sure they'd sort out the Arm with no trouble, and at very little cost, within say 5 years? *slaps wrist*

  5. Not people...just you Chris. I dont have any solr/nightlights on the boat, I dont think much of them. But I know some people like to personnalise their boats in way that sometimes seem naff to me, be it with Dolls, stuffed animals, old canalware... or solar lights. Not my thing, but each to their own, live and let live etc. Your high horse/ground position of insulting them (morons??) and accusing them of ruining your night vision (please...) makes it too tempting. So yes, I will consider getting some on the off-chance that it might ruin some miserable grumpy git's day...or night. with love.

  6. If your ears were taking a bashing then the drill bit is blunt. It may have been crap from the start ie bad quality, or abused in use. A good quality drill bit, used at a good speed with pressure applied should get you through the 6mm? hull in less then a minute, assuming 6mm pilot hole for the hole saw. If you have access to a engineers supplier or similar go buy a new bit, ask for a split point drill. I don't know your experience level etc , my experience of DIY is the information you get is rubbish and the "professional" tools and accessories offered are just crap. A simple job with the correct kit takes minutes, that's how we look good lol. The same job with inferior kit takes everyone ages. The price difference between crap and good stuff is nothing compared to the grief and frustration endured.

  10. But there in lies the problem. Canals might not be primarily about boaters, but they are primarily about boats, yes people fish them and people look for the wildlife, but there is a reason why a navigable waterway attracts a heck of a lot more land based bankside interest than an unnavigable one. Boats. How many examples do you want. I'm working with a developer in London who is willing to spend thick end of a million on making a piece of water navigable and having moorings on it. They're not interested in wildlife or anglers, they want the franchised bar and restaurant to overlook boats. Why do businesses spring up offering boat trips on the shortest length of navigable waterway (Roath Park Lake in Cardiff, the Derwent in Belper, just two examples). Boats. The public at large are fascinated by boats. A fundamental mistake is being made, just because boaters are a relatively small percentage of canal users doesn't mean that boats are not important.
