overheating sterngland

The hose is not a bit of cooling hose, 5 ply stern gland hose from t Norris . The boat is a sea master 813 and 40 years old this I’m assuming is the original equipment , far from being a right lash up !! , the grease is oozing from. The front of the gland and when i inspected the packing all wet and greasy. I don’t know what else to say other than thanks for all your input and I’m going to get some one to recheck the alighnment for me to make 100% .  I just don’t know why both manufactures used the hot cup of tea  theory and told me not to worrry, they make and supply these world wide .  Why would they give me false info.

The gland was repacked, because the hose was very old and showing signs of wear I had it all dismantled checked for wear and replaced the hose with correct type , the greaser cup is small and I was going to fit a remote one but if the grease is being delivered does it really matter how?  It just means I have to fill the cup more often .  I totally agree on the position though it looks like the whole of the hose needs to be greased ???

That "grease" oozing from the front of the gland may well be the lubricant that should be manufactured into the packing. Traditionally it was tallow but goodness knows what it is nowadays. Graphite, PTFE, molybdenum?

 

The gland you illustrate above is exactly how  would expect it to be configured but yours is different. Note the length of hose in proportion to the the other parts and then compare yours. However as long as the dogs (if there are any) are properly engaged in your assembly then its fine. It may be that the shaft is a running fit right through the metal parts and apart from where the two parts meet in the hose grease may find its way forward.

To be honest I am stumped. If everything is in in line and it drips as you say then it should no get hot. It suggests to me that something may be out of line but you know the boat and I have not seen it.

 

If it has a P or A bracket just in front of the prop  think that I would be going for a swim to try to see/feel if it as suffered a side swipe and has bent. Either that or is there any chance the engine has sifted on the beds? When i enhanced your original image it suggested that the engine MIGHT ave dropped and is pulling the gland down a little but it could be a optical illusion.

Like I said I think I need to get another engineer to look alighnment to make 100% sure.  And if I have to go for a swim we have weather for it !   Thanks. For your help

Yes like I said I totally agree the position is different,  but The grease is pouring out the front , so I know it’s getting there !

any way I’ll leave to the experts , what do I know I’m a gas engineer

Thanks all for your input hopefully I’ll get to the bottom of it, something is not right .  I just wanted to know how serious.  Thanks again

Out the front? It should also be coming out of the back/stern, near the prop.

Not if its a Cutless bearing it shouldn't.  This is not a narrowboat, ts a GRP cruiser and there may be no actual bearing behind the greaser with the shaft being supported between the gearbox flange and a Cutless bearing in a P or A bracket. Cutless bearings are rubber and water lubricated. I can't see grease doing much good to an ordinary rubber Cutless bearing. It all depends upon  the OPs particular stern gear. I bet there is a couple of feet of exposed shaft between the hull and the P/A bracket with the aft bearing.

 

I rather suspect there may be a plain bearing under the grease cap though.

Hi,  I had another engineer at the boat today from my local marina.  To those who are interested in the solution to this problem,  it was the the stuffing box not quite central round the shaft on closer inspection the pusher was rubbing on the shaft.   so we released the clip and manovered, twisted and manipulated the whole lot,  and got it as central as we could.  we ran it for an hour it was warm !!!!! He suggested that we could have achieved more central by moving the engine sideways just a touch but was reluctant, because  he wants to be sure that its central in the stern tube so when the boat comes of the water we will check it all.  for the moment im happy that its not overheating.  thanks for every ones input and to the guy that suggested the rubber tube was new and stiff and out of line, you was right after all . ?

And if you wish to have the pusher dead square with the stuffing gland use the inside diameter prongs on of a vernier gauge or an inside diameter caliper on both sides  between the the pusher and stuffing gland flanges and adjust the nuts to equalize it exactly.
