Dog found dumped in the Leeds and Liverpool canal

The RSPCA is appealing for information after a dead dog, tightly bound in tape and plastic, was found dumped in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal behind Dalby Crescent in Blackburn.

The dog, was an adult female black lurcher crossbreed, she showed no obvious outward signs of injury but her body had been tightly bound in plastic film and silver duct tape. Who would do such an awful thing to an animal?

She was not microchipped nor wearing a collar and tag, but she seemed in a good, healthy condition which suggests she may have once belonged to someone. If anyone has any information that could help. Please contact the RSPCA cruelty and advice line on 0870 55 55 999. Calls are in confidence.

CAN ANYONE HELP???

Before everyone goes off on one, has the cause of death been established, is this cruelty or just an odd way of disposing of a deceased pet? Burial at sea, as it were.

Yes it could be (Post Mortem pending) that it's someone being particularly thick and not knowing how to deal with a dead pet. I've always wrapped my pets up in bin bags (prior to burial, not casting adrift, I hasten to add). Goldfish get flushed, although my mum paid a vet to have one of her goldfish put down. I've never been able to ask the details because she finds it as traumatic as I find it funny.

I found my cat, Ben, as a kitten, floating down the canal in a bin bag containing the mum and 7 siblings, all dead except him, so the unthinkable does happen. But maybe not this time (hopefully)

Edited to make comprehensible

Hi Moley.

The cause of death has not yet been establised. Here is the origninal report http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/displ...ed_in_canal.php

What ever the cause of death, dumping a dog in the canal bound in plastic and tape is not nice especially for the person or persons who found her.

I am against cruelty in any form as I used to rescue the results of cruelty. If this was just a burial then why not dig a grave and bury her. Whilst cruising our liveaboard rabbit died. I did not just chuck her overboard. We found a nice spot for her final resting place and gave her a proper burial.

Lets hope that what ever the reasons for this situation it is resolved quickly.

I read recently that if your pet dies at home, it is now illegal for you to take the body to the vet's for disposal; this is supposedly a measure to prevent the spread of diseases. You now have to pay for a specialist company to come and take the body away. To many people the cost of this will be prohibitive, so no doubt a great many more bodies will simply be dumped from now on. This of course will have precisely the opposite effect to that which was naively intended.

The cause of death has not yet been establised. Here is the original report:

RSPCA inspector Nina Port is at a loss to explain what happened.

She said: "This is a strange and unusual incident.

"It's difficult to tell whether the dog was dead or alive when she was thrown in the water.

"We are now trying to determine how this dog met such an unfortunate end.

Whatever the cause of death, dumping a dog in the canal bound in plastic and tape is not nice especially for the person or persons who found her.

Thanks Jo.

I'm not going to jump to condemn until they can establish if the dog drowned or suffocated or was already dead, but I would agree it would be most unpleasant for the finder. Then again, perhaps whoever was misguided enough to bag the dog and dump her in the cut didn't expect the package to float.

There certainly are some strange people around.

Not the first dog to be deliberately drowned in the Leeds and Liverpool I am sorry to say. Even more sad to me was that it was a Lurcher. They are usually excellent loyal dogs in my experience. Miserable bastards who did it should be keel hauled IMHO.

Glad your not all jumping to conclusions. As the dog was tightly bound in tape and plastic could it not have been parceled up and mailed to someone and just happened to fall out the back of the mail van, roll down the hill and fall into the canal?????

As anyone had the common sense to check if ther was a mailing label attached or indeed a return address????

Some folk just dont think before they jump to conclusions.

I wont go off on one

or jump to anything

But why tape a dead dog up it wont stop it from floating ( but it will stop it from swimming away to safety )

Burial at sea ?

As i said i wont go off on one on this site, but i am involved with greyhound and lurcher rescue and will leave my true feelings on the rescue sites that i visit.

I once returned home late to find a cat flattened on the road outside my gate......and disposed of it.

2 or 3 days later there was a knock on the door......was a young man with a photo of his cat asking us if we'd seen it/check garages, sheds etc........

Well I took one look at the photo and knew his cat was less than six feet from where he was standing....in the wheelie bin, but could tell him........

one of the canal walking guide books describes finding a dog in the L-L scrabbling to get out of the canal, its paws bleeding. the author then says he could still hear its cries as he walked past and on into Liverpool. I wish I had never read the book.

Being involved in rescue I know the cruelty that is inflicted on animals and sorry but I do find some of the comments offensive and distasteful. Whatever happened to this dog whether it was bound and thrown into the canal before or after death it should not have happened.

Not read the book, is it out on DVD?

On a serious note I do actually agree with you, but as no one can now help this poor animal I feel humourous comments more entertaining to read. Thers to much doom and gloom in this World.

The dogs dead and if the culprits can be bought to justice then I'm all for it but dont expect everyone to join you in a months mourning. Life goes on.

now im sorry bit have a strong opinion on this aswell, i know my ranting about hangings etc got a topic closed before but we all should have our own say, i am sure no-one on here would laugh if their brother/sister/wife/husband was taped up and drowned in the canal or a baby was wrapped ina blanket , taped up and thrown in would you be the miserable bastard who stands by and watches ,there is no reason for making jokes at the misfortune of the dog, i do not find it funny, i do not laugh at it and i wouldnt think a fellow human would do so.

there i have said it, i will probably be pm'd for my language, or deleted from the forum or whatever else or go into an argument with fellow member/s but i have said my piece

people who laugh at other people/animals misfortune make me sick with disgust

I think the majority of people who have posted on this thread agree with your sentiments.

I don't expect anyone to mourn for a month but I find humorous comments about such an act not in the best of taste especially on a public forum.

hold on, before we get all "woe woe, won't someone think of the children" No one has actually made any humorous comments about the act of drowning dogs.

in fact we don't even know that the dog was drowned, so lets all take a nice deep breath, take a step back, and embrace individuality.
