Hi Loafer, what's the significance of the apostrophe mate?

 

It shouldn't be there! Google 'grocer's apostrophe' - it is explained well there, better than I can do.

 

The one I was referring to is in the photos in post 10, on the dark book cover. 'Rent's'.

Yup. That article highlights my own dilemma with the ACTUAL grocer's apostrophe.

 

After all, there surely must have been more than one grocer, committing such a crime, therefore 'grocers' apostrophe', innit!

The CRT does have competent archivists.

 

The canal known as the Deepfields Cut appears to have been made late 1790's. It was the intention to make it through to Bloomfield, but geological conditions prevented completion of the original tunnel, although two shafts at the Coseley end appear to have been made. The Telford Tunnel was 1837/8 when a deep cutting was made at the Coseley end.
