I would find a specific forum about pubs and restaurants on the canal immensely useful

Does anyone else agree ?

I would suggest that the title for any entry should be the pub or restaurant name, the location and the canal its on

e.g. "Rising Sun, Shackerstone, Ashby".

Useful info would be whether they do food, maybe categorised : bar snacks, pub food, separate restaurant,

specialisations e.g Indian, Thai,

the range of beers for the real ale fans

and a price range e.g "typical price Steak : £8.75"

walking distance from the canal

and finally a comment as to whether you would return to that pub.

I think you will find that most members agree.

We already have a pinned ‘pubs’ section, but it's all rather random and would be far better if it was organised by waterway, and in the correct order along that waterway.

But, can you suggest how that could be accomplished?

This is probably all easier said than done, but thinking aloud and for Jon's attention:

Would it be possible to have a main forum ‘Pubs & Restaurants’, sub-forums: Staffs & Worcs, Trent & Mersey etc. etc. and can moderators move posts?

What I mean is, sub-forum X-Canal, Tom posts “Navigation by bridge 5”, Dick posts “The Lock by bridge 20”, Harry posts “The Wharf by bridge 15”. Could a Mod, when they had the time and the inclination, re-arrange those into the correct order?

Good idea.

I would certainly be willing to put in some time shifting posts around.

Moving to suggestions...

It's certainly possible. Are you suggesting a seperate forum for each waterway, or by region?

Jon

I am not the originator of this good idea but I would think that a sensible idea would be to have a main forum and then subforums, one for each waterway.

I would really appreciate such a forum, pubs change so quickly these days, some shut, do different (indifferent) food. Others visited before and serving really bad food are never visited again and now may be really good. It would be really helpful when planning a trip, especially when you only have a week!!

Would it not be a good idea to have each canal as a sub topic? Then we could post comments for Stratford canal/oxford canal etc then it would be up to people to give clear directions to each pub/restaurants, giving bridge numbers etc.

It seems the idea has some support.

I think the key to this working will be how clearly people post their entries and how good the search engine is.

Having sub-groups for each canal sounds like a good idea. I think listing the pubs in geographical sequence may prove difficult to achieve but if the pub name and a nearby town or village as well as a lock or bridge number are

put in the post title I'm assuming the search engine could pick up appropriate entries.

In my view the present Best Waterways Pubs works quite well, it just needs a few minor modifications. Firstly contributers should be asked to begin with a brief location, Canal, then town/ village, in order to keep the numbers down place a limit to, say a five minute walk from the canal.

All pub/ restaurant guides tend to become outdated very rapidly, find some method by which the contributions can be be revised or deleted annually.

Example:

Macclesfield Canal, Bollington canalside. The Pig & Whistle, Shires bitter £1.20 a pint, low cost bar snacks. Children not allowed. A nice friendly pub spoilt only slightly by the young females who insist on buying you drinks, demonstrating their pole dancing skills, and inviting themselves onto your boat after closing time.

John do you have the full address of the above pub in question? If so do they sell dry roasted peanuts?

I would prefer the pubs and restaurants listed by canal so you can plan a trip around them (isn't what the cut for these days?)

Hi Steveh.

I would say you need to pin down the location a bit more closely than just the canal, after all the waterway in question may be 100 miles long and any two pubs may be 4 or 5 days cruising between them.

No sorry John slight confusion, if the pub/restaurant forum is broken down canal by canal in bridge order so you can select which places you wish to visit whilst cruising that section of the canal. The example that you gave in your previous post is spot on the only additional information I would give is popularity of the mooring and any special events ie The Vine Kinver every second Wednesday music night, bring you own instrument and join in.

Perhaps I should clarify what exactly we could provide here:

- It would need to be in a similar format to the links directory is at present.

- Searching would only be available via the standard forum search engine, which should pretty much do the job however searching by distance would not be possible.

- Thread titles can be moderated to ensure uniformity across the directory

- It is not possible to displays threads in geographical order unless each thread is started with the nearest bridge number so the forum has something to apply order to.

I'm certainly up for this idea. I've created a poll to guauge exact interest, because this would be quite a serious undertaking to set up so I need to know that there is interest.

Hi All

Re this suggestion would it be possible to make a template available on site with all the relevant questions/details listed. This could then be filled in sent to an administrator who could then put it in the correct location waterway or region This would give some form of uniformity to the site for those planning trips

Yar Well ( It's good to join in)
