I use a polishing kit like this one. I power it with a battery drill and it makes polishing tarnished brass really easy.

I have used lemon juice with great results. If a little help is needed mix it with bar keepers friend.

I need a quick way to clean brass mushroom vents which have not been cleaned in two years. Quick means anything faster than the army way if you understand my drift. These vents are well dark.

 

When someone has gone to the trouble of inventing a material that, without interference from us, takes on that delightful 'well dark' lustre, it seems such a shame that people are so determined to make it into something else!

 

Paint the buggers, or buy new ones and lacquer them, life is too short.

 

...or just leave them and appreciate their subtle beauty.

I would leave them but the boat has just be re-painted and the vents look scummy in comparison. If I sleep on this conundrum they will never get done. Where's me bed!

The beauty of dull brown brass fittings is too subtle for me to appreciate.

The original owner of DQ had all brass bits except the tiller bar, window frames, nav lights, Houdini batches etc powder coated in a Matt goldish colour, which looks like tarnished brass. 7 years on it is now beginning to bubble.

 

Gives you the worst of all worlds
