Just to avoid confusion, this is most definitely NOT Alton. It is another boat which covers the vast distance from Whaley Bridge to Poynton once a fortnight in one direction only, selling the odd bag of coal and has done so for several years.

George ex nb Alton retired

He must be there this week, he's not at Poynton and shock horror, we moored in 'his' spot last time!

just come out of Bugsworth and we spoke to the office re extension ...filled in paperwork in duplicate... one set kept by office and one set to be handed in or posted in letter box on departure. You get a permit to display in window so that no one will bother you when doing their rounds. It was Whalley water weekend and very busy but there didn't seem to be a problem with extending stay. We spoke to at least 6 other boaters that had extended their stay without any problems. I was disappointed with the moorings available in Whalley Bridge and it would have been nice to see more visitor moorings there and less long stay.

Spot on! Another week exactly, starting at 7.15 a.m. he'll plough his cheerful furrow back to 'his' second mooring in Poynton. Sorry I should have said 3rd, but his apparent 'home' mooring is 3 days away.

I got confused about the Poynton moorings last time I went through. You used to be able to moor up on the flash, south of the bridge by the water point/boatyard. Last time I went through it was solid with boats that looked as if they hadn't moved in months but there's no indication anywhere that it's been turned into permament moorings. Does any of you locals know if it's not a 14 day or visitor mooring any more?

What is this "Extending your stay" crime? Is it as serious as the "Running the canal system but not bothering to do any dredging" crime?

A lot of 'water juggling' going on which is keeping CRT's workers occupied, instead of driving some maintenance boats back & for'ards with silt-sucking vacuum hoses on the back and then having more important servicing carried out (eg. broken paddles & leaky gates).

What does it matter if you overstep a mooring time limit if there are no other boats around and you are not bothering anyone?

How many sacks of coal need to be sold to be able to purchase a CRT licence...

No, neither long term nor permanent; but you get a lot of dumpers here as it's closer to the road. We face same issue, although we tend to moor nearer to the caravan park end, so we can use the steps for the field below.
