Wanted
As mentioned elsewhere, I have taken advantage of the sunshine and the fact that I have an empty engine ole at the moment to tart up my bilges. Thought I'd share I used an angle grinder with a non woven prep wheel on it as well as an electric scraper (see other thread) to remove the paint and layers of crud. I then washed everything down with an Eco degreaser. Next I gave it a coat of Aquasteel rust converter and left it for 24 hours. After this I gave it two coats of Zinc Primer (of which I am told was relatively pointless and should have used standard primer, ah well!) After that had gone off I gave it two coats of Danboline Bilge paint. It wasn't the nicest job I have ever done but I sure am glad that it's no longer niggling away! Right, now to bung the lump in! pophops
That looks great and well worth the effort
MtB
Yep Danboline is wonderful stuff. I think you could have put it straight onto the rust converter though. Or even straight onto the rust. It used to be used for covering anything and everything in one go, back in the day.
Wanted
Yeah, I recon I went well over the top, but as the engine is out I thought it would be a good chance to go all out, all I need do now is cyclical maintenance, which will just be a coat of Danboline when it needs it. Leaks are so much easier to track down in a nice clean engine bay.
Wanted
Indeed, it's been one of those jobs I have put off for years, I now have another job to put off for years though... The paint in the bilge looks better than the paint on the boat....

Wanted
The joys of gel coat Funny enough I looked at a GRP topped Narrowboat the other day, part of the appeal was the longevity and easy of painting. Wasn't quite right though.
