I'd dilute it with red diesel in the winter unless you want to go the whole hog and fit an electric pre-heater or second diesel tank for starting up.

Of know real importance but a point of interest, I was once told but have never researched it that the original Diesel engine was designed to run on peanut oil, and the best vegetable oil to use is rapeseed because it's more like diesel than other types

 

Rudolf Diesel was interested in using vegetable oils or coal dust as a fuel. At the time, he wouldn't have had a lot of choice. Remember, gasoline became a popular fuel as a cheap replacement for natural oils (whale, vegetable and so on) so petrol and diesel wouldn't have been available in huge quantities

For heating purposes there is always home heating oil which seems to be 60% the price of red. It's thinner and can be used to thin veg oil for heating things through burners expecting diesel. Heating oil has different tags from red and derv so can easily be found by the vat man.
