Wow Julynian...... your kitchen looks fab! Great for ideas................ any other pics for this galley 'show and tell' please??!!

Hi Sas

With standard units designing a kitchen/galley is quite simple especially in a wide beam. There are certain things about this kitchen that differs from a standard house fitted kitchen.

First off is the height of the kitchen units. They are about 60mm higher than standard, this makes a lot of differenced and stops us having to stoop when preparing food and washing up so now we don't suffer a niggling back pain when working in the kitchen.

The kitchen is set on a plinth made from 18mm ply as the legs would be too short for the height we require. This leaves a large gap under the kitchen sink, so we fitted a large drawer in this space for storage.

The cooker & hob are standard build in New World cooker adapted of course.

We also chose a fridge that was slightly different from the norm. This Bosch model A+ rated as well has all opening drawer access, so ne need to be bending down to access stuff on the back shelves. This is probably one of our best buys and got it for under £200 You'll be lucky to pick one up now for under £250.

We went a bit bling with regard to the splash back, although the glass splash back is a perfect solution being easy clean. The splash backs were designed by us and cut to that design from 8mm thick solid Blue Glass by a company called Modern Glass in Stoke on Trent.

The pull up electrical socket works really well, when not needed it just pushes under the worktop, it's positioned so it drops in the corner of the carousel unit so not impeding the carousels rotation.

There is probably some more info on our blog too.

Point of order though, in a boat it's called a galley not a kitchen. This depends on whether one considers a widebeam a proper boat though, I guess! wink.png

Not on our boat it isn't.

Sea going boats may well have galleys, but proper canal boats have kitchens.

(They don't have "heads" either!)

Excellent! I LOVE the idea of the pull out drawers on the fridge and the pull-up sockets.

Inspirational - thank you!

Yeah it all helps to make things easier in limited space. Ikea do have some clever ideas as well.

Another wee gadget I forgot to mention is the washing up liquid dispenser, It's difficult to see but it's directly in front of the tap. It's a simple IKEA dispenser that draws washing up liquid from a bottle you fill under the sink in the cupboard. What we did though was do away with the smaller supplied bottle and replace it with a 5L container, then just extended the suction tube to reach the bottom of the 5L container by drilling an appropriate sized hole through the containers screw cap

You can buy catering grade 5L containers of washing up liquid for under a fiver. They very concentrated and seem to last ages, well over a year as we can recall at the moment. It just avoids ugly messy washing up liquid bottles being used.

They are much cheaper from IKEA than the example above but very similar.

Proper canal boats do not have kitchens! You might peel the spuds on the slide and boil them on the stove, that's it
