mark99
I assume Golden Film SAE 30 is more than adequate to use for the air filter reservoir? (air filter = UFO shaped, red colour, Walsh type). I assume also you take out the old dirty oil, clean the housing, wash out the wire filter (what with?) and just top up with new oil - being careful not to overfill. Thanks Edited January 4, 2014 by mark99
Timleech
Almost any oil will do, it's only there to catch dust particles. Wash the wire filter with paraffin/kerosene, but you must let it drain thoroughly before running the engine. Tim
Burgiesburnin
As per Timleech. A friend of mine who was very finicky about filters and his engine swears by using cooking oil.
Higgs
My Type 2 VW camper had an oil air-filter reservoir. Very handy, clean and replace the oil.
jenevers
Am I right in thinking that many marine diesels don't have filters on the intake because there's virtually no dust in a boat engine room, unlike road vehicles?

Yes in a marine environment but we are in an agricultural/urban environment not marine.
