Brass Washers For Hinges

Featured Posts

Our front doors have dropped a little and now catch on the bottom cill.

This due to wear in the brass washers in the hinges.

Does anyone KNOW where I might get some new brass washers???

They are 16mm OD and 10mm ID which is not a standard washer.

I know that I could drill out some m8 washers but this is not trivial when you live on a boat and don't even have a pillar drill.

(hints and tips on drilling out washers welcome)

I have a tapered reamer like this which is very useful for enlarging holes

Thanks. I thought about that too. I do expect I could buy a lot of washers for the price of a reamer...but I will have a look on eBay! and its a useful thing to have in the toolbox...though the toolbox and spare parts collection is threatening to sink us!

The brass washers on our doors and side hatch have a habit of vanishing when the doors are lifted off and cannot be bought separately. The replacement problem was solved by using stainless steel spring washers, like these.

How many? How thick?

I have a tag end of phosphor bronze 16mm OD (well, 15.8) which I'll happily put a 10mm hole through & you can slice your own off or if you don't have the necessary I'll even cut 'em up for you.

Cheers

Thanks

This is the forum at its best as I have also received an offer of machining via a pm.

I am going to have a shot at drilling out some m8 washers first, if that fails then I will have to decide which offer of help to accept!!.

Phosphor bronze does sound like the way to do it!
