pugwash61
I've been a live aboard for the past 7 years now & its only this year that I'm having real grief trying to insure my car. I've moored in marina's & had no problem, but now I'm a C/C'er I cant get any cover for love nor money. I'm told that I must give them a maximum of 2 post codes, of where the car will be parked overnight & no more. So now I'm being told that because I choose to live on a boat, I'm a second class citizen & cant insure my car. I wouldn't mind if I were trying to insure something of value, but I'm not. Its a little old banger which is virtually thief proof. Who the hell would want to steal a Rover anyway? I'm trying to be up-front with them, I mean I could lie & give them a family members address, But I don't want to give them a get out clause, in the event of any claim. Has anyone out there got any idea's?

Keeping Up
If nobody would want to steal it, you don't want to waste money insuring against such an event. Is it still possible to get TPO (third party only) insurance?
Heffalump
It is, I insured my motorbike TPO. Have you tried a host of different insurers? somebody like NFU will be more likely to help you out, they specialise in rural doodahs

Have you tried a host of different insurers? somebody like NFU will be more likely to help you out, they specialise in rural doodahs I have been with NFU Mutual for nearly twenty years and this year I managed a 170 pound saving on my van insurance through the meerkat compare website, they seem to have a good choice of companies to suit all needs. pugwash61
I've tried using the usual web sites, compare the meerkat etc. but they ALL ask me for a post code, which I just cant give them Coz I'm moving all the time. So when I call them on the phone to try & sort it out, all I get is COMPUTER SAY'S NO!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes you have to duck and dive, I think you said earlier that you had access to postcodes, it seems maybe that will have to be your route, and you will just have to do your homework for the possible scenarios if you have to make a claim. there is sometimes a play off in life for the things we desire and a little bit of planning against the inconvenienceof being dependant on someones address seems a small price to pay. When was the last time you claimed?

When was the last time you claimed? This is what I don't understand about it. I have 7 yrs no claims, I'm a professional driver, I hold both H.G.V. & P.S.V license & the car's worth next to nil. Why do they insist on where its going to be parked overnight. Who in their right mind would want to nick it?

It will be some desk jobsworth reading from a script you need to circumvent it somehow The Nfu people are helpful but again a large outfit and I suspect will adopt the "normal" procedure. It will be a case of tailoring you profile to suit the system, without compromising yourself too much... GOOD LUCK
denboy
once apon a time i went for my usual ins renewal with the same company i had been with for 4 years and by a stroke of luck the ins broker had a thought and checked the small print,,,,,,the policy didn`t cover live aboard boaters ,,,,in effect i had been driving for 4 years with no ins as they wouldn`t have paid out but they took the premium money off me

Keeping Up
I got my car insurance renewal today from Admiral. The comparison websites would have saved me a few pounds, but I spoke directly to Churchill and saved myself over £150 (on two cars). I'm happy! carlt
I too, insured "normal" cars with NFU mutual or Swinton, when living aboard, because they have local branches where you can go and talk to an actual, real-life human beings about things that don't have an internet tick box. Classic vehicles were always with Footman, James for the same reason. Now we're back on dry land swmbo is with Kwik Fit (cheapest quote plus free MOT) and I've switched to Performance Direct because they specialise in classic camper policies. nigel carton
Yeah well I renewed my insurance last October, went away for a couple of weeks, moved to barton turns, then returned to Stone to collect mail, and had two letters from Budget, first one asking for proof of no claims (they had it) second letter saying they had cancelled the policy, I'd been driving around with no insurance. When I phoned them, the phone went quiet then apology, not good enough, I asked for a written apology, I'm still waiting. So Budget/confused.com and your anoying ads ..... RAM IT! Rant over . pugwash61
Right. I tried a new tack this morning. 3rd party only, no risk for them to worry about now as the car wouldn't be covered for theft & they still wont have it. Why do they need to have a post code of where the car will be parked overnight, if they're not covering it for theft? I can see me sitting on my ar*e this year, claiming the dole coz I cant get to work at four oc in the morning. Am I asking too much here?

Personally I think your making it more complicated than it needs to be. You obviously have a V5 so use the post code on that. So what if the insurnce people want to know where the car will be stored at night. How many of use leave our cars on the pub car park overnight after drinking one too many? My cars tends to be left in all manner of strange places therefore on the insurance document it says 'vehicle kept on a public road' Sorted. Seems to be latest money making tack requesting proof of no claims bonus. I find it quite amusing how they allow you take out insurance and then after taking your money demand proof! Of course if you have not saved your old documents or cannot remember the name of your insurer then you have no option then to pay them extra money! Robbing gits. David Schweizer
The main reason that insurers ask for an address where the car will normally be kept, is to assess the risk of theft or break in. My son (who has since emigrated) moved from our village, where the rates are amongst the lowest in the country, into central Bath where rates are amongst the highest. Guess where he declared the car was normally kept. It is all a nonsense because the car spent less time parked up than it did elsewhere. It spent most of it's time during the week parked in central Bristol where the rates are very high, and at the weekends, wherever the local Cricket club/Rugby team were playing. Just pick a legitimate address where you can have your Licence and Insurance renewals mailed, and give them that address. If it does get stolen or damaged, it will be whilst you are visiting somewhere else, and that will not be a lie.
pugwash61
That's it. I think I've cracked it. I've played them at their own game. Been on to Tesco Compare & given them the address to their own store's car park & they've accepted it. (Well they could hardly tell me, it was not secure enough could they)?
