Hi,

I have a Mowog AI 9H9 1500 Diesel engine fitted on my boat. The plate (in the pic) is leaking oil. It appears to have a green sealant around it. That is the rear tappet chest cover on a BMC 1.5D engine.  Originally they had cork but most modern head gasket sets have red silicone rubber ones in.

ASAP  or Calcutt will have them, they are the same on all smaller BMC engines petrol or diesel so an original Mini one is the same for instance.

If they are the same as the A series ones, and from the picture they are, I found them on the minispares website at £1.24 each. BTW minispares are at the higher quality/price end of the market. You should also fit the seals on the bolts.   Part numbers 12A1175 for the large one, 12A1176 for the small.

Hard to tell, but looking at the way the pain seems to have flaked off around the bolt head, I think it may already have distorted (dished). If so, turn it upside down onto a flat surface and use a small hammer or hammer and drift to flatten out the dish from the inside. You may have to re-drill the hole. Certainly take care not to distort it again.

 

It all looks very oily, even above the cover, so check that the rocker cover gasket is not leaking. It is well hidden by the marine manifold, so you may need a length of bent wire to gently probe the gap between head and cover in case the gasket has slipped inside. FWIW, in latter years I tended to stick the gasket to the cover with silicon gasket sealer because the cork ones always distorted, but nowadays you can get silicon ones that hold their shape better.

That's really useful to know. I've only  just got some cork ones from Calcutt boats
