Rob-M
I was at the BCLM when they arrived back, the number of moored boats made it interesting them turning in to the museum. The Last Coal Run from Anglesey film used three loaded joeys, there is a preview of the film on YouTube,
springy
Their return journey was a bit epic as well - Pelsall to BCLM took 28 hours "boating" of which 14 were spent working down the weed hatch ! springy
Heartland
Whilst the convoys of boats to Cannock Chase Coalfield was a feature of tug haulage in the twentieth century perspective needs to to given to all boats used in the trade which principally was horse drawn and included the Hampton boats for increased capacity. Then there are also the other coalfields like Warwickshire and Leicestershire where the narrowboat collected coal like Anglesey Basin, there were the shoots to load boats on the Ashby Canal. I am sure Pluto can talk about the collieries alongside the Leeds & Liverpool Canal including those near Burnley.
Pluto
There was the Lastrohrfloss, or raft of loaded tubes, operating on the Dortmund-Ems and Mittellandkanal in Germany. Known as die Schlange, or the snake, it operated until the 1980s. This photo is from the Mannesmann Archive. More details in German at http://www.schiffundtechnik.com/lexikon/w/wintrans-50---kanalschlange.html. Unfortunately the DVD by Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) seems to no longer be available.
