They are simple enough to check, you just need to take the regulator off the back of the alternator. However, if you just pull it out you will snap the brushes, it has to be sort of lifted and twisted so the brushes clear the case. If you do that also check the slip rings for wear. I don't think you need to do anything apart from keep an eye on it.
