The whole of the aluminium superstructure is in need of repair due to water ingress. Interior timbers are in need of replacing or re-furbishing due to damp/condensation/water ingress damage and water marks.

 

What is involved in repairing an aluminium superstructure I wonder.

Buckets full of pop rivets. Although actually Al can be bonded (posh word for glued) quite successfully and a very handy person could very likely make a reasonably good job without tearing the lot off.

My thinking of 'the job' was that the joints between panels had leaked and the wooden frame work was rotten and needed a replacing - certainly a 'minor job' when compared to "Maxwell of York"

On that thread the new owner says getting the JK6 installed and running is a priority. Sounds like his priorities changed!

The engine details may well also affect the aim of taking the ship to France. The requirement for vessels >20m to have an ES-TRIN (technical requirements for inland navigation vessels) certificate has been mentioned, but it is a lot more complex than the UK BSS.

 

There was a run-in period before certification was introduced where old vessels gained 'grandfather rights' allowing them to avoid a lot of the more problematic requirements, but a vessel being brought into service on continental waterways today is effectively treated as a new-build, and must comply with e.g. engine specifications which I am fairly confident would exclude the possibility of a JK6 as it could never meet the emissions limit.

Another word of caution, at the moment you can obtain a French tourist visa for stays of up to six months or a long stay visa for up to a year, this is in addition to the 90 days in every 180 which can be used in the rest of Europe. 

In 2022 a Europe wide visa ETIAS comes into force and at the moment no one seems to know how this will affect the French visas, DBA keeps asking questions but so far no answers.
