  1. Hi all 👋, first post on here but probably one of many, I'm currently looking into the heating system I am going to install on my widebeam i was hoping you could take a look and tell me what you think and if it all looks ok. (Heating sorce: Solid fuel fire and diesel water heater Heating up - radiators, under floor heating and hot water) I am thinking of installing the bubble b1c1 corner stove with back boiler, also what are peoples thoughts on the Prity AM 12 ( https://fireplacesforhome.com/Wood-Burning-Stove-Corner-Model-Fireplace-Log-Burner-Solid-Fuel-Prity-AM-12kw ) multifuel stove? And also a webasto diesel water heater. All my heating appliances are going to run to the NRG zone 5 manifold wich does allow thermosyphon , I plan to have 4x radiators, underfloor heating and calorifier attached. The diagram is missing the PRV and the pipes from the back boiler to the heating manifold will be in 28mm. My biggest worry is the thermosyphon safety as it is going to run to the heating manifold so i dont have any heat leak. Any input would be appreciated. Kind regards Brad I've linked the NRG zone let me know what you think to using this as I can't see any post speaking about this or any manifold. https://www.nrgawareness.com/product/nrg-zone-4-5-6-32-32-28/
  2. Hi how do you remove the washers behind the primary air spinner on the squirrel to allow the primary air to be opened up as originally intended? Note from Magpie Patrick - spilt from K&A fatality thread - some posts were posted before the spit
  3. https://thelincolnite.co.uk/?p=273342 Caught fire this afternoon. (Tues 10th) To say it was not in the best condition beforehand would have been a gross understatement! Moored opposite official morings on way out of Lincoln (westward). Noticed it a week or so ago, tied to a tree. Hopefully no one aboard.
  4. Common sense tells me I shouldn't have my fire on when passing through tunnels? I'm planning on going through Blisworth tunnel today, which I know has ventilation, but still unsure as to whether there's any potential for CO poisoning. Probably a very obvious question! Just checking!
  5. Hi thank you for reading! Just replacing the front fire glass on my multifuel fire stove The four fixings that hold the glass in place have sheared and failed ... No way of replacing ? Has this happened to any others out there. .. Did you find a solution. Did you find a glue / cement that would hold at the high temperatures ??? Thank you for any possible help Andy
  6. THE owner of a canal boat was forced to leap into the cold water after the vessel went up in flames. And the dramatic incident on the Trent and Mersey Canal, off Newport Lane in Middleport, also resulted in the death of the man’s pet dog. Crews from Hanley and Sandyford were called out to the fire at 8.30am this morning. Incident commander Martin Hall, based at Sandyford, said the boat was well alight on arrival. He said: “It appears the fire was caused when the owner had been refilling an onboard generator. The fumes and petrol had created a fireball. “The owner was forced to jump into the water while the other occupant was able to get off onto the footpath. Read more: http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/Man-jumped-canal-ball-canal-boat-Middlport-update/story-26026779-detail/story.html#ixzz3RldvzXH5 Generators are a popular topic on CWDF and the BSS often alerts owners to the risk from carbon monoxide poisoning from the exhaust fumes. But every so often people using generators on boats are involved in very serious fires. We have news of another sad event linked to the potential refilling of a generator. I know it will be heartbreaking for the owner to lose a pet dog, never mind their boat and belongings. At least we can be thankful that both occupants escaped. To help support our our advice to refuel (and run) portable generators ashore, the BSS has reminder stickers 'Refuel Ashore'. They are are available to stick on portable petrol tanks, spare fuel cans and portable generators. They are free, just email the BSS office directly (please don't use the PM service for this) using the email address below. And we can also provide copies of the Fire Kills / BSS booklet Fire Safety on Boats which is also available on our website www.boatsafetyscheme.org/stay-safe
  7. Ok, first of all, be gentle we have had a bit of a shock. Moored up fine on our first night. Lazy start to the next morning. Wife turned the key and then engine made an odd noise, then smoke escaped from the exhaust hole and we shut her down- though she wouldn't initially turn off. The smoke smelt electrical right away and was later confirmed to be electrical. We called the RCR and it was unfixable- even if he had all the parts (alternator, starter motor) he would have run into difficulties as we later discovered that the wiring was burnt and the ignition switch unusable. As you can imagine we are quite shaken up by this and not a little sad. We were also on a public holiday, so unable to get help till four days later. We were fully stocked though and optimistically managed to have a great time moored up on the tow path watching the boats go by. So, that's our story so far. How common is this? xx Anna
  8. Not least because of recent sad incidents, I want to give this Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service event some publicity - check out their twitter feed. Boat Safety presentation 7:30pm18th Jan Cross Keys Great Bedwyn .If you own a canal boat come along collect free smoke-carbon monoxide alarm There's a 30 minute chat, then they will be handing out free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to boat owners. Tell your mates, alert them on Snap Chat, Facebook, text them, call them, knock on their boat, by any means get them there. By my reckoning, I think from memory (caveat) its been 6 boaters died in 5 boat fires between Newbury and Bristol since 2003 ................... And if you're not from that area, call your local fire service and ask for a boat fire risk/safety check. Please spread the word Thanks
  9. Boaters using damp wood and logs in their stoves could be risking a triple whammy including increased costs, stove damage and carbon monoxide poisoning says the Boat Safety Scheme. It is crucial that wood fuel is kept in a dry, well-ventilated area. If not, the damp fuel will cause the stove to run at a lower temperature as the heat of the fire will be producing steam and so the stove needs much more fuel to keep the boat warm. Even worse, the steam dissolves-out flammable, acidic tars which will cling to and block up, as well as inevitably damage, the stove and its chimney. Damaged stove installations are more likely to leak combustion gases into the cabin space, and because of incomplete combustion as the fuel is damp, those gases are more likely to contain carbon monoxide (CO) – giving the vicious cycle that could see a highly toxic atmosphere in the boat. Stove flues lined with tar could also lead to a chimney fire... ...read more at http://bit.ly/woodfuelwisdom Hope it helps forumites to avoid being hit by unnecessary costs, carbon monoxide or fire. Regards Rob
  10. This happened yesterday, a serious fire and a dog died: http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/11850969.Man_taken_to_hospital_after_boat_fire_at_Castle_Mill/ http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/11853317.Woman_loses_dog_and_possessions_in_boat_fire/ The boat is part of a "land grab" of moored boats on the castle mill stream in the no-mans land between the oxford canal and river thames. http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/11283663.Boat_people_in_land_grab/
  11. Please help. Cleaned the fire. Dropped the top plate inside and gave it a good clean. Stuck my hand up the pipe. All good. Smoke is coming out of chimney. But a lot of smoke is poring out of top air vents above the door into the boat. capturedvideo.MOV
  12. This was our neighbour's home last night in town. The charred and waterlogged (due to fire brigade dousing) wreck is currently being pumped out and excavated back on the moorings - they have lost the lot. http://www.birminghamupdates.com/two-dogs-rescued-from-a-barge-fire-near-the-icc-in-the-city-centre/ Luckily a.) dogs and they are safe and b.) the shell seems sound as the fire was dealt with quickly. People are rallying round to help. But it is very very scary to see first hand what can happen. Presumed cause was the solid fuel stove that overheated and set light to the back board, which wasn't fire board. This is very very common - just because a fire surround has pretty tiles, it does not mean it is safely constructed. Behind those tiles can scorch. As we enter the season of nice toasty fires, please do service and check appliances, and check the smoke and CO alarms too.
  13. Hi All, The Questions: Do all 'seperate bottom draw stoves' start as strongly as a morso and are the cheaper ones harder to keep in? Has anyone else found the old model 'single door' Acorn Aarrow stoves a little slow to start/ have any tips? I've previously had some breathing difficulties with my stove lit through winter and had some really good suggestions on a previous post including burning the stove fast and hot which I must say, when I can manage it, helps immensely. Now my friend has what a lot of people regard as the best of the boat stoves, a morso-squirrel. I've noticed how fast and incredibly powerful the stove can get going with the bottom drawer open when lighting. My mate asked me to get his stove going for him whilst away one day and I had managed to get his going in about 25 minutes, a little longer for coal to take and then able to shut it down and kept it in for the day until he got back. I have the old Acorn Aarrow model and this always takes about an hour or two to really get super hot and i'm sure the slow burning start that the aarow seems to limp off to a start with doesn't help in contributing to my asthma. I know having really dry wood helps alot but as a live-aboard through a very wet winter sometimes this is quite a challenge, so really thinking about replacing my old arrow with one of these bottom draw stoves, any help really appreciated :-) Pete
  14. hi My stove has been kicking out loads of smoke whenever i open the door to put more wood and coal. I'm sure this didn't happen that much before. Recently the smoke has been even kicking back out through the top vent. Im sure the flu is not blocked as i have cleaned it out. any ideas why or how how to stop it? Thanks Rory
  15. Well if forecast is right October the 4th is rain all day and down to 4deg C at night so Fire laid and matches at ready .But will met office be right ?
  16. Wow what scorching weather today, unless you are in Scotland or N. Ireland (sorry peeps), so right now is a good time time to check that you have left nothing in the path of rays of sun focussed by domed decklights aka bullseyes. Move anything that can burn including aerosol cans, curtains, fluffy toys etc. You should also keep an eye out for scorching of wood lining and fittings closes to the bullseye too. See some examples of where things have started to go wrong and our advice http://www.boatsafetyscheme.org/stay-safe/fire-safety-for-boats/domed-decklights-bullseyes/
  17. I have just been made aware of this information and it may help some members of this forum. Clesse is asking any owner of a 2013 manufactured Compact 800 regulator to contact the company. This is what part of the consumer notice says: ...Following advice of our technical team we have decided that 2013 production shall be subject to a full recall and exchange, replacing with the new 2014 models. In doing so existing customers can be reassured that they have the highest level of standards in safety and reliability with an LP gas regulator. If you have purchased, installed or own a Compact 800 regulator dated 2013 and have not been contacted already, please use the information below to identify the model and call Clesse (UK) Ltd for further assistance.... and it goes on to add: A gas safety issue may potentially arise in models produced in 2013 where a potential risk of gas leakage on the second stage regulation may occur that also impacts on the performance of the OPSO system. ‘Paramount importance is to ensure customer safety and reliable operation.’ Therefore we have taken the decision to recall and replace free of charge to ensure there are no risks to the consumer or unreliable operation. What to do next: Identify the model using the details following these instructions, and if the product is a Compact 800 and if the product is a Compact 800 and manufactured within 2013, call Clesse (UK) Ltd immediately with your contact details to register the product for a free exchange. We will use your existing gas engineer or arrange for a qualified gas engineer to replace the item for you as soon as possible. Model Numbers and Descriptions COMPACT 800 LOW PRESSURE PROPANE AUTOMATIC CHANGEOVER WITH OPSO Produced in 2013 and include production months: 04/13, 05/13, 06/13, 07/13, 08/13, 09/13, 10/13 Any Part number or Description with text “C800” These are only edits from the notice. You should please read the full version and especially on how to identify the recalled product before taking any actions - there are some helpful images on the notice - go to http://www.clesse.co.uk/Product%20return%20Consumer%20Notice.pdf Regards Rob
