  1. Alan, I did fight my way through the 8pages of the similar thread but I started this as a new subject because I am asking if CRT no longer accept the historic number which in our case was issued by G.U. and do other historic boat owners agree to display the modern number beside the historic number.
  2. I have just received a letter from CRT stating it is a legal requirement for our two historic boats (Badsey & Angel) to display on both sides, their modern index number. In 79 years, Badsey has always displayed its original number "G.U.12674" and never the modern number 68474. BW were perfectly happy with this. Both boats display their licenses. Apparently this enforcement is because "other canal users MAY ASSUME that a boat is unlicensed". What is especially galling is the phrase "without this we can't dredge as much, keep the locks working.............etc.etc." As I opened the letter Badsey was high and dry on the undredged mud because once again, CRT just will not repair the bottom lock at Hillmorton to keep the water in the pound overnight. Do any other historic boat owners display two five figure numbers each side of their boat?
  3. Ours does have a circulation pump that needs power - that is a fact - But the drip fed diesel water heaters can, and do, work without any power on a gravity fed system.
  4. The drip feed ones don't use any leccy though, do they? Our Kabola E5 is drip fed and heats the radiators and water. Needs a tiny bit of battery power to pump the water round though.
  5. Are Cutty Sark or HMS Victory on the National Historic Ships Register? "Intact" is a clever word to use. It merely means "complete", "whole" or "unbroken". Gives a new meaning to 70% complete.
  6. I put Badsey on the Historic Ships register after hearing R Parry speak at a HNBC meeting shortly after he arrived as CRT ChX. He simply suggested it may be a good way for CRT licencing folk to quickly tell if a boat qualified for an historic boat discount. As it costs nothing to go on the NHSRegister, I thought it sounded sensible. As for the 10% discount, I have always thought this should be larger when you take into consideration, that our canals are not maintained for the likes of Badsey to navigate.

  8. Best I've seen at describing the life and its demise with the hope it can carry on. And yes the Two Boats is the one at Long Itchington. We enjoyed a few meals and pints there just before Christmas.
  9. Whatever happened to the proposal to re-instate the basin at the end of this arm - currently a car park

  12. Nick Wolfe has just gone down through Hillmorton Locks and shouted that there is a problem with a paddle on one of the middle locks. Sorry but I didn't catch which one but it shouldn't be a problem for you.
  13. Got a reply from Pete who makes the Epping Stove and he confirms they now make the smokebox without damper or door but all current ones are for new stoves. The only spare he had was one made by mistake in some type of hardened steel!! so I have bought that at a very reasonable price.
  14. If you mean the raised rim that the smoke/damper box fits over, in my experience it doesn't need any help to corrode.
  15. What a lovely post. And the lovely lady to whom you refer is the Lesley whose name signs off the original post above (and come to think of it - below) and is co-organiser of the event and proprietor of canalchef café. She says to thank you.
  16. Thanks for the tips. What happens to Araldite when it gets hot?
  17. Alan, we do hope you recover quickly. Been there once though not in cold water. Frightening. Don't let it linger in the mind.
  18. In the life of our Epping Stove the damper box that sits on the top connected to the chimney has had to be replaced twice. The second one has just disintegrated again around the base. Assuming I can find a replacement, they are certainly not cheap AND...... I have never found any use for the damper. The one on the ashbox door seems enough to control the heat/burn-rate. If the top damper is not used then there is no use for the poorly fitting inspection door whose only purpose is to give access to free the corrosion that jams up the the damper butterfly and its very presence weakens the unit and causes the disintegration. So my question is: Does anyone make a simple connector to join the oval outlet on the top of the Epping stove to a round end of a standard chimney?

  24. Apart from two pack over the replaced steel beneath the waterline, we've used Wickes black masonry paint for the remaining vast expanse of sides for years. Jus thavn't "come out" until now.
