  1. If you managed Thorne in a 70ft boat I imagine you could figure out how to get same through Salterhebble top lock - when you do let me know I'll do a vlog - sharing the subs of course.
  2. The Club have been assured by a CaRT manager - one of the better ones albeit newer ones (gulp!)- that work is progressing and the navigation will be open next Easter. I imagine the North West brigade will still be negotiating with someone to re-open Punchbowl Bridge on the Rochdale so keep your fingers crossed. If you plan to do the Hudderfield and Standedge Tunnel allow plenty of time, expect issues like empty pounds, enter and exit lock top gates very carefully where water is low - the bottom gates will be leaking - but it's worth it in the end.
  3. I would give the Pennines a wide berth ?
  4. mismanagement - the process of managing something badly or wrongly. Toddbrook, logos, signage, cycling, covid, maintenance, tools, pubs, Punchbowl bridge,
  5. Some of the CaRT ground staff are brilliant, some volunteers are friendly and helpful, some admin and regional mangers try their best to sort out issues so I'm not totally anti-CaRT it's just the general direction of flow is disadvantaging navigation. Anyone in this area who cannot fit the gauge for the Standedge tunnel has been trapped in West Yorkshire since August 28 and the maintenance of the Rochdale, Huddersfield & Calder Navigation is poor to say the least. Mr Parry said it's too expensive to retain bank staff but how much does it cost (not just in terms of money) to employ inexperienced contractors and hire tools when needed. So who is calling CaRT to task over those matters?
  6. Well so far nothing to excite me into joining NABO. I don't see how changed terms and conditions or Thames signage make my life anywhere near as the hell on earth caused by the stoppages we suffer here in Yorkshire. I'm not anti-CaRT just anti letting the system decline due to financial mismanagement and policies inconsistent with a navigation authority - which I thought they are supposed to be. .

    NABO?

A couple of articles on Narrowboatworld suggesting the IWA has lost its mojo and NABO as a credible alternative. https://www.narrowboatworld.com/12726-what-s-happened-to-the-iwa https://www.narrowboatworld.com/12727-there-is-always-nabo I believe us boaters desperately need an independent organisation who will vigorously take CaRT to task over its abysmal record on closures and management. I don't know much about NABO they don't seem to attract very much publicity for their activities unlike the NBTA . Does anyone know what they have done recently that makes them worth considering?
  8. I use one of these and it's brilliant. Same situation as the OP moved berth further away from wifi - it's no problem now https://www.broadbandbuyer.com/products/25246-solwise-wl-patriot-usb/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr4KH3ZmM7QIVj7myCh1fsQ0BEAQYAiABEgLk0fD_BwE
  9. What's going on with CaRT? The navigation on the Selby Canal has been closed for weeks since a vehicle strike on Tankards bridge yet traffic is being diverted over it to avoid the A19 road works. CaRT have now decided to allow restricted passage "From Tuesday 17th November 2020 the bridge will be re-opened to canal traffic with a restriction limiting passage to vessels with a maximum height of 7ft. This limitation will be clearly signed on site, and vessels greater than 7ft in height will not be able to pass the protective scaffold mitigating the risk of any falling masonry. " How come the Punchbowl Bridge which also is open to traffic, has not suffered a vehicle strike and doesn't look to be seriously damaged (see above pics) remains closed for the rest of the winter? And why close the canal across the summit? Someone somewhere is a waste of oxygen!
  10. Unbelievable what a useless shower CaRT is! 13/11/2020 16:29 Discussions and investigations continue into the repair works needed to third-party owned bridge, Bridge 43, Punchbowl Bridge on the Rochdale Canal. Our teams are working with local authorities to establish a method of repair, however, due to reasons beyond our control, we anticipate navigation will remain closed between Lock 36 and Lock 45 for the duration of the winter period. A further update will be provided by Monday 11 January 2021.
  11. The commodore at our Club gets replaced after 2 years and so far have been okay people - it's the committee that you need to worry about! Us low ranking members manage to survive by dancing naked around a burning handspike with a candle in one hand and an apple in the other chanting "C C" C". Cheap diesel, cheap moorings, cheap dry dock!
  12. OH who is in charge of Homeless section in a Local Authority says: Whilst there could be an argument that TD made himself homeless by allegedly not complying with CaRT rules so 'legally' they may not be obliged to house him, it's likely they would take into account circumstances, age and health. In addition because of the Covid situation the government brought in a policy to find accommodation for all homeless people in an attempt to keep them off the streets and the public safe. So it's likely that if TD wanted his local council to find him accommodation they would.
  13. A while back I seem to remember CaRT or was it BW announcing there were 80,000 dangerous trees around the system. I wonder how many of them have been removed or made safe?
  14. Okay I won't be rude but here's a critique of your video which prompted me to post The lighting, video and audio are poor quality The shakey pan around Fradley Pool forced me look away People like me have no interest in newcomers telling how wonderful canal life is - we already know. Rude could be regarded as coming on this forum peddling a poor quality Vlog to people who have much more experience of these things than yourself. If you think I was rude think yourself lucky it wasn't one of the heavyweight hitters on here. I spent 3 days in intensive care after disagreeing with the world's leading bite's yer neck bluntist - Not Naming anyone! ???
  15. Jon Horsfall, head of customer service support at the Canal & River Trust, comments: “The Trust’s core purpose is maintaining the 2,000 miles of canals and rivers we look after and making the experience of using them as good as we can. Boaters play a central role in helping to fund the work with around 10% of our income coming from boat licences. ................." Of course you are.
  16. Broadcut like Elland, Mirfield, Battyeford, Brighouse etc isn't a river mooring. The issue is the nearby River Calder floods 5 metres plus above normal in the worst conditions. It then overflows the poorly maintained and inadequate wash walls, flood banks etc and fills the canal which can flow like a spate river. The recently installed flood alleviation schemes higher up the valley have made it worse for the lower valley. A logical but costly solution would be to bolster defenses downstream. If that's not done it's likely February's devastation of Figure of Three locks will be repeated. If flood defenses at Figure of Three are increased it would be certain help protect Broadcut Moorings as that's where the river entered the cut in February.
  17. Whilst I have every sympathy with the Broadcut moorers and have signed the petition I fear this is one fight that can't be won. CaRT will use the H&S argument and the lack of funds to protect the boats. As I said elsewhere, IMO Broadcut is no more at risk than anywhere else along the Calder Valley. Even if the petition succeeds as Alan points out if CaRT say the moorings are not safe will insurance cover potential loss or flood damage? One argument that could be used is that CaRT still advertise these moorings on their Waterside Moorings website. Seems some departments in CaRT still think they're safe? https://www.watersidemooring.com/331-broad-cut-l1 A bit thin but good luck RonnieF1967 - you know where you will be welcome if your petition fails.
  18. From NBW AFTER the publicity regarding boats having to book to use the broad Grand Union tunnels, CaRT has amended its advice. Kevin McNiff tells us he has just received confirmation from Matthew Symonds at CaRT that the booking system being brought in is to allow online booking for widebeam only passage through Braunston and Blisworth tunnels. The death knell! There’s no agenda for all boats to book. That would indeed spell the death knell for us all! With Harecastle becoming volunteer run, are Staffordshire Fire and Rescue aware? I would like to see the written protocols on this one.
  19. Sorry I have very little sympathy here. Easily avoided by just doing what the rest of us do. CaRT IMO are crap but it's their game and the courts seem to back them up. Both Tony Dunkley & Geoff Mayers did their best to constantly challenge the system and they lost. Life is too short who needs that kind of pressure.
  20. Not well thought out schemes. Years ago I watched as the EA ripped out all the willows along the Yorkshire Ouse tributaries and drained the moors. Their reasoning was the newly built flood defenses at York could cope with the water so move it as quickly as possible down there. It worked reasonably well until they had trouble with the Foss barrage. The flood defense works in the upper Calder Valley move the water quickly to the lower valley where there is no additional flood management. Broadcut does indeed flood which is why the berth holders installed their own rise & fall system after Boxing Day 2015 - although I did hear CaRT weren't too happy about that at the time.
