  1. After a rather disturbing encounter between my wife and a person who may have been a CART employee/volunteer, I would enquire whether said persons carry any sort of visible ID?
  2. Looking at Alan's image the stop control was designed for cable operation and also has the same type of slotted hole
  3. I suspect it may be standard as the original image was taken long before the engine was in the boat, would guess I just replaced the rusty bits with new bits.
  4. The parts list indicates the nut/bolt is one of the travel limiting stops but does not show a spring fitted over it, possibly I've added this at some stage to balance the weight of a control rod.
  5. If you look at the new spring in the image you can just about make out a brass nut/bolt which is just long enough to keep the spring, (bottom end) located, the top end is located by a protrusion on the cast/forged lever. I'll see if I can dig up a parts list later. Edit: As our engine started life as an industrial pumpset there are a few non standard mods!
  6. Thanks Dave. I'll give him a ring.
  7. The colliery basins on the west side.
  8. Can anyone give me an update on these basins? We moored there many years ago but found them piled off during a later visit, they now appear open again on GoogleEarth. Any history of events would be most interesting.
  9. Anthracite beans (15 to 20 mm). Easily controllable with high calorific value per unit mass and does not dirty stove glass. .
  10. Very good point. If we hand start we turn de-compressed until oil pressure is detected on guage, there is also a very noticeable increase in 'stiffness' as pressure registers. Normal procedure for starting after a long idle period is to hand crank to this point and then fire up on starter motor.
  11. Never gave it any thought before, should be in this lot though? http://www.oilspecifications.org/api_eolcs.php
  12. Been using this stuff for last few years, was just under £10 gallon when I last bought a 5 gallon drum http://www.oils.am/home/243.html Edit: Seems to be £70 a drum now at some outlets!
  13. The engine sprocket has a large boss which has two ratchet dogs milled into it which then engage with a matching pair of pivoted ratchet levers in the outer housing (keyed to the engine shaft). The engine sprocket also has two ball races to allow it to 'freewheel' when engine starts. Never got around to fitting springs so crankshaft sometimes requires turning so one ratchet lever engages by gravity, it then auto disengages under influence of centrifugal force. The top shaft runs in a bit of pipe bored for 'oilite' bushes with collars each end, also has two welded on tags to fit to extended cylinder head bolts (nuts changed to double length type). Chain is tensioned by shimming with washers, if required. Edit: Found a pic of the 'silver steel' ratchet lever pivot, pressed in with split pin, just in case etc. Just a copy of the Lister clutch made from available bits.
  14. If you've got the time and access to a small lathe just knock up a rough copy for about £50
  15. Take the injectors to someone reputable for a check. Any history on the engine?
  16. Welcome back.

  17. Fuel consumption. Our HA2 is rated at 19.5 BHP@1500 RPM. IIRC book fuel consumption is 0.43 Lbs/BHP/Hour. So, at rated output on open water, 1 gallon/hour or 1gallon/day (or less) pottering about on shallow canals
  18. Also seem to remember hire boats were automatically stopped at some arbitary flood condition on the River Severn? From experience, a very good idea.
  19. Forms may be new but, IIRC, boaters were advised,(and a record kept) at least as early as the 80s.
  20. From observation only one and two cylinder Listers sound 'correct', three, four and six cylinder engines sound, (and feel) more like a turbine at full speed/load. Proud to add I'm a time served Fitter Turner who is not above using a suitable coin/spanner combination if needs must.
  21. Stolen from elsewhere. "He covered the NUMEROUS "contaminants" and "interference gasses" that will give our meters false readings in detail; and yes, the gasses (H2) given off by an automotive battery charger will activate a residential carbon monoxide detector and give our handhelds fits. If anyone is intrested; the EMT Center CO Course info/applications are available from: Bergen County EMS Training Center at East 281 Pascack Road in Paramus, NJ 07652 (201) 967-0751."
  22. That vessel carrying LNG? On the subject of the flimsy blue canisters, some come filled with Butane/Propane mix for better performance when used by the high altitude climbing types. Although flimsy I suspect they are more than adequate as regards the pressure Vs area calculation?
  23. Something to consider if you fill bottles using the high warm/low cold and bathroom scale option is that the lower bottle,(if filled many times) will accumulate and concentrate any sludge, water and rust etc. This is a problem with small blowlamp bottles such as Primus etc.
