  6. If I remember my local history/stories right... Many years ago (when horse boats were still common) one man used to walk his horse over the tunnel and leave it in some grazing for the night, go back to his boat, wait until about midnight, rig up a sort of sail using the cabin shafts and some of the cloths, shove his boat into the tunnel mouth and then go to bed, relying on the draft to propel his boat through. Apparently this worked quite well, until morning an FMC steamer and her butty were out very early and hit the boat.. No-one was hurt, but the make-shift rigging was completely annihilted and some choice expletives were heard echoing through the tunnel
  7. My folks can't remember why they called our big birdy Linnet. I reckon it suits her though When she was up on the Lancaster (long before it was re-connected) she was called Th'only. As in (Spoken with a Lancs accent obviously) "Th'only narabowut ont' canal" *groans and flinches in sympathy for Linnet*
  8. As is my understanding of Yarwoods history; they did try using the butty stern, merely adapting it, but they quickly decided that that wasn't the best or most economical way forward and simply chopped it off and replaced it.

  14. Does it count that was within 1 hour of being born on a boat (stupid, efficient ambulance men) and that I've never lived in a house? I love my boat
  15. Yeah right. The only way you'll get any of my family off the cut is to fill it in
  16. bit bigger than that. Dont think I didn't measure Bonny up for a quick harness swap though...
  17. I'm starting to break in the ponies to horse-boating and I need to find out where I can get the gear. Most of the tack I can get no problems, but what about: +Small nose-tins +Ear caps +Pony brasses (previously mentioned ) +Small bobbins +Shetland pony sized hames +Shetland pony sized swingle-tree (Not that desperate, I can make one) thank you in advance
  18. Its sad isn't it? I shouldn't know that, I should be out hot-wiring cars or playing computer games...

  21. possibly one of the boats over there when it was being restored?
  22. I second that Think thats a resounding 'no' to your question
  23. Any one know where I can buy some proper pony brasses? Not small horse brasses! Pony brasses are basically miniture horse brasses, designed for the working ponies. We use them for Linnets chimney chain, but know we have the Shetland ponies... We need alot more
