  1. No idea but if you find out then we can update Canalplan if it's wrong.
  2. I'm working on it - I've got tracking working quite well and got a fix for editing tracks when GPS signal gets lost and the phone decides to use cell towers to triangulate its position. Now I just need to finish off the admin screens and it will be released on the Beta site .I also need to find out if there is a apple variant of Backitude (and what it needs to configure it)
  3. If they made their data consistent - maybe giving each closure an ID and then using that ID for any future updates, and used a controlled list of stoppage types and update types then the data could be used by anyone on any website or application.
  4. There is a typo in his link: http://canalplan.org.uk/cgi-bin/gazetteer.cgi You may find that, as it uses the geolocation facility of your browser, that you get a better result if you use a wifi connection rather than a wired link to you internet router.
  5. We've got the data - I coded up a great bit of code to parse emails and handle them. The problem is that not only do they send out huge numbers of very short term closures (tree blocking canal) but the navigation cleared messages don't always follow a good format, or they come in with a misleading category of worse of all they don't come in at all. Scraping that page wouldn't help us much at all as we'd still have to work out what has vanished from the listings. And on that page is a prime example of the problem: Both of those are actually the same message - which actually is: \ And the ONLY email that was sent was this [with the subject Navigation closure notice: Trent & Mersey Canal, Middlewich Branch (Shrop Union Canal)] Notice AlertIntersection of: Lock 74 to Lock 74 on Trent & Mersey Canal and Lock 1, Wardle Lock to Lock 1, Wardle Lock on Middlewich Branch (Shrop Union Canal) Friday 13 June 2014 until Friday 13 June 2014 18:00 Type: Navigation Closure Reason: Inspection Update on 13/06/2014:The obstruction has been removed and the navigation is now open. Update on 13/06/2014:Navigation is still closed due to the obstruction Original message:Navigation is closed at lock 74, Middlewich, due to an obstruction in the lock A further update will be posted this afternoon You can view this notice and its map online here: http://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/1210/lock-74-middlewich You can find all notices at the url below: http://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices Please do not reply to the email. Reply, Reply All or Forward | More\ So what we have is a message saying its a closure when it fact it is a notice of end of closure. The only place where it says the canal is open is in the update : "The obstruction has been removed and the navigation is now open."
  6. Canalplan has facilities and each place shows the nearest facilities to it, and how to get there. but its only based on what data is in there. We did look at stoppages but the completely random mess of noise from the BW (and CaRT) stoppages emails makes it just about impossible to do.. For example they will send out tons of closure emails about fallen trees but the "reopen" emails don't follow any pattern and often aren't easily linkable to the closure even they relate to. Thus Canalplan ends up with a lot of orphaned closures littering the system
  7. I see from another post that you're planning to be at Oxley Marine on Sunday Evening. Mintball is currently on hard standing there having some work done on her. Don't forget that you can upload photos to Canalplan where I'm sure they'll add to the rapidly growing archive of Canal photos. Steve
  8. There's not a lot of moorings above Tyrley before you get to the cutting. The pub up the road from the bridge is pretty good for food, or so I've been told. Stopping in Market Drayton where there are a lot of visitor moorings gives you access to some good pubs including the Joule's brewery tap (The Red Lion) and some pretty good Indian and Chinese restaurants.
  9. It will be interesting to see what comes through from Cart this year - the Broads Authority data has blanks when power is not known so I'm going to make sure that when I build the new data sets when EA and Cart provide their data I don't get rogue values like this. Steve That boat seems to be on the Shroppie near Market Drayton... either that or another boat with a similar notice. Steve
  10. The list of boat builders / models in the boat list is a bit of mess for lots of reasons - mainly that a lot of it is missing. I'm hoping to clean things up this year as we get the new data in from the various navigation authorities. Steve
  11. Indeed we do ;-)
  12. Don't forget to rate your overnight / lunch / evening meal mooring spots. We'd love Canalplan to be able to recommend "good" moorings (and adjust the over night stops accordingly) based on your own personal preferences. As for river speed - its awkward as it would mean canalplan knowing the direction of flow on each section and match that to the direction you're going.
  13. You've got to love the original data in the first place .... the raw data I have has 180 as the power output.
  14. The data in the Boat Listing isn't always correct - draft and engine power are, as far as I know, optional on the CRT forms. As this data is pulled from CRT then I imagine their system defaults to a draft of zero and a power of 999 Steve
  15. We're planning a trip from Market Drayton to Boston and back this summer and then a quick trip down to Droitwich later in the year, and it looks like Chester for Easter
  16. To be honest the Cromwell - Keadby run isn't that bad, and if the weather is good I personally find it a better run than Selby to Naburn.
  17. Alan, looking through the raw data behind the boat register there is no boat with a name remotely like that. The boat doesn't look like it's been renamed any time recently and there is quite a bit of what looks like historic data in the boat register (i.e. we have one boat that we know has changed names 3 times over the years) so its all very odd
  18. I've just checked across the raw data for the boat register and there isn't anything like that in it. What Navigation Authority is it registered with? Its possible that its not on the database if its registered with one of the Nav Auths that data isn't held for Steve
  19. I know that we had a spike earlier this year caused by the rogue "bot" that semalt run which at one point was making 12 calls a second to one single page on Canalplan. I blocked them because we want to make sure that as much of our bandwidth and server power is available to do what its supposed to be doing.... in fact Canalplan has quite a few things blocked in its .htaccess file. Steve
  20. Not directly on the canal - all the places have more detailed descriptions (lock, basin, reach etc.) Steve
  21. Hmm - will be interesting to see what happens when the next set of data comes from the navigation authorities... Steve
  22. It probably didn't get posted here. Jim posted details on his site and we posted a notice on Canalplan's Facebook Page.
  23. We did add stoppages support to Canalplan but the randomness and inconsistent nature of the email from (at the time) BW made it totally unworkable without huge amounts of manual intervention. Once CaRTs system has settled down I may look at trying again and writing some more logic to remove the "noise" (such as closures due to fallen trees - which never ever seem to get tree removed emails) Steve
  24. Canalplanner - the PC based app or Canalplan AC - the web based system? Canalplan AC doesn't assume anything about the number of crew members. It's preset speeds range from 2.5 mph on narrow waters to 4 on rivers and it's preset timings from 12 mins per single lock on narrow canals to 20 per lock on rivers, with slightly reduced times for locks when they're in flights
