  1. Evening all, BMC 2.2 diesel engine has intermittent puffs of blue smoke, not talking about cold but when really nice and warm, running for a couple of hours. It feels a little strange to me as it's not constant & it seems to happen more at lower revs, less than 1800 ish. I'm assuming it oil burning (blue smoke), compression is good and pretty even between the cylinders, it starts well, even from cold, 10 secs of heat & turn turn fire and runs smooth immediately, so I'm assuming the rings are ok. I've checked the breather it's clear. My only other thought is valve stem oil seals, I'm sure if read somewhere only required on inlet valves. Anyway, what do you guys think, is it more likely to be oil burning, whats the most likely suspect?

  3. Personally I wouldn't get the propex heater repaired, I'd replace it with a diesel heater. Just be aware they can use a fair bit of electricity if used for a long time. Perhaps have a look at a Refleks heater. A friend has one and I'm so jealous!! During the winter he runs it 24 / 7 has a nice visible flame, uses very little diesel and zero electricity!!
  4. These are the ones I use: (Use the right size, image is just to show the type, Mikalor do nice ones...) Be careful tho, 'cos you can't half get 'em tight!! I also use a little bit of exhaust assembly paste, really helps to stick the parts together...
  5. Wow, that's not been underwater has it! I think you might be opening a can of worms there!
  6. Yup, exactly what I've done, or as far as is reasonably possible. It's much easier to extend the inlet tubing than the exhaust.
  7. The only 2 passcodes i know of are 1688 & 9009. Of course there may well be newer heaters i haven't used yet...
  8. The heaters work well but you MUST ditch all the garbage components, clips, fuel lines, filters, exhaust, wiring (basically everything apart from the heater) and replace with the marine equivalent. if the heater cost £100 the extra parts will.often be £150 to £200. Make sure you 'tune' it once running and for God's sake make sure your CO alarm works!
  9. Depends on the quality of the padlock a short sharp tap with a hammer will either peeaknit off or cause the pin to jump... Every one should have one, amazing tool!
  10. It looks familiar, rather like a Westerbeke 102 which IIRC is heavily based on a Mitsubishi... Edit You tube turns thus up
  11. An egg cup full will cover a huge area.

  13. At our local tip you get accosted by somone with a clip board by the gate asking if you've booked and have proof of address. If you haven't they force you to turn around in the queue and drive away with a very disapproving look... and they wonder why fly tipping is on the rise!
  14. I'd have thought that would have been a question to be asked before you put a deposit down?!
  15. Dont shoot me here, probably been 15 years since I've even seen one but IIRC don't they grip better one way than the other?
  16. Deliberately pricing people out of their home & way of life is neither right nor is it going to lie well with those it affects. I'm sure most of you will agree with me that you choose this way of life because you love it. Yes the initial out lay maybe cheaper than bricks & mortar but after that is more expensive, licence, insurance, maintenance, repairs, diesel, gas, logs/coal etc etc. I for one would be furious to be priced out of my home, way of life & social circle and would do everything in my power to push back against the system. If I asked my employer for an extra £1500 PA because my licence had doubled, what do you think they're answer would be! Edit: I also suspect, like Mr Khan's ULEZ scheme has devalued many cars, doubling the licence may well devalue boats...
  17. Aye, but if you double the licence fee then I fear there would suddenly be a lot more 'piss-takers' not out of choice but out of necessity.
  18. Make sure all lights are LED and the 'colour' you want. Personally 'warm white' for me. Get as much solar as you can fit/afford. It might be over spec'd in the summer but it'll be under spec'd in the winter... If in doubt over spec the solar controller so you can add panels at a later date.
  19. Which waterway would you like to be on?
  20. I purchased a reasonably rare car a while back, insured it as to what I paid for it. I was subsequently rear-ended, other parties insurance never asked what I paid for it and paid out market value which was more than I paid. Ok there are a few caveats to this example, it was a classic car on a classic policy and I had to send them a number of listings for the particular car for sale, I believe they averaged the price they paid.
  21. I was thinking much the same as AdE, market value is market value, end of. Else I could go and buy a £50 wreck, insure it for £10 million and accidently destroy it next month...!
  22. If you don't get what you want from your insurance company you really should talk to someone that knows insurance law inside out. Quite a few years ago I knew someone who's insurance company 'didn't want to play ball' 1 letter was all it took from an insurance expert, the insurance company immediately changed they're tune. Unfortunatly I have no idea what was contained within the letter...
