  1. 1973 is well old! The vendor may say it's not been overplated but zooming in on the hull pics,I can see what looks like overplating or perhaps substantial patching. The asking price is far too much for a boat of that age. It needs substantial fitting out, which I am sure you know will be costly and involve lots of work. I would estimate the asking price from the information and photos published to be less than £10K. I don't think an experienced boater would buy it, but a newbie might. If you have £35K to spend on a boat, then I am sure you can do much better than that. Keep looking and have patience. Personally I am fairly pissed off with brokers and vendors of boats trying to talk up the price of boats.I have looked and am still looking for my next boat, but having owned three, I am now no pushover, and when I hear the usual horse manure spiel about buy now cos the price of boats is going through the roof, and what superb boat this is when I can see that the boat is anything but superb, I can feel my temper rising as I have probably driven for three hours to look at rubbish!
  2. How do you manage all four? Do you buy your Viagra wholesale? 😳
  3. There are some cruel sods on here!
  4. It is unusual for the pound between lock 1 and 2 to be low on the Broad. Perhaps a paddle on lock 1 has been left open. Lock 2 will need your long throw windlass, and if you can't move the towpath side paddle, try the other. They are both very stiff so you will need Fernando's help.
  5. I think he needs his head examining! But, it takes allsorts. As for crossing the Atlantic in a narrowboat, it's not for me.I like the reassuring sight of dry land a few yards either side.
  6. A rat poison box holder?
  7. Lost one of a pair of expensive gloves by putting one on the cabin roof to drink my tea while underway. When I next looked it had gone. It was on the Bridgewater canal. If you go along there, keep an eye out for it. 🐸
  8. I didn't mean to imply you were a "Moaning Minnie" it was not aimed at you specifically. Unfortunately, it is usually necessary to transit some of less salubrius areas to reach the nice bits of the system. It's all part and parcel of the job.
  9. If you enjoy a bit of physical work and have a 'can do' attitude, then the HNC will be enjoyable. The HNC is unfortunately no good for "Moaning Minnies"

  11. Havn't been along the HNC this year, but although a taxing canal (mainly because of the sheer number of locks, and some low pounds) I think you may be worrying unduly. I have seen volockies helping boats through both HNC locks and on the Broad, so they do seem to be available. I helped with a couple of volockies an elderly lady on a sixty footer along the Broad. It was a bit of a struggle but we got her through. Don't give up on the HNC, it's worth the effort, there are stunning views along the way, and some good stopover places.Slaithwaite being my favourite.
  12. I too played a hose on a suspected leaking window with the same result as you.Sometimes it can take some time for the water to percolate through. In my case, the window wasn't leaking, and the leak was traced to one of the roof rail fittings leaking behind the trim and running down inside and coming out at the bottom of the window frame.
  13. If it was about the music and the skill of the artist, I would be interested. But it has become a circus. This was one of the main reasons that The Beatles gave up.People were so busy screaming at them, they may as well have sung Ten Green Bottles.
  14. Had lots of window problems. Check that drain holes or slots are clear.Check that your new window seal is not blocking the drain holes, if it is, you might need to cut a little away. Silicone is ok for the bath but no use on a boat. To find a leak I put bog roll around the suspect area held in place with a bit of masking tape.
  15. Went to look at a lovely boat, been neglected , but had a good fitout and a modern low hours engine, and the asking price was reasonable. But... on entering the cabin, the smell of cat urine was so overpowering it stung my nostrils. All the soft furnishings, curtains and carpets would have to be changed, it also had fabric trim which would need either replacing or deep cleaning. Driving home I could still smell cat urine on my clothes and had to open the car windows. Didn't make an offer on this boat.
  16. I make £557- 23 every three months,£42- 86 per week.
  17. Sorry to hear (from your other post) that you hate nursing as my daughter has applied to Uni to do a degree in Psyciatric (hope she can spell better than me!) nursing. Is it possible to do supply/ bank nursing at your chosen hours? As a retired teacher, I have found there is always supply work to do.
  18. Well, the OP did ask for brutal honesty. He's got it in spades here. I do wholeheartedly agree with Bilgepump.
  19. The Peak Forest and Macclesfield are lovely canals, but to get there from where you are would involve the dreaded Rochdale or the Huddersfield Broad (nine locks and a lift bridge) to Huddersfield, and forty two narrow locks to the Standedge Tunnel. Single handed it is a real slog. The alternative would be the C+H,the A+C and the South Yorkshire waterways to Keadby onto the Trent. I have seen Volockies helping a lady through the Hudd Broad and Narrow, so they are available with suitable notice. That would be my preferred route, although it could be a rather long trip. From the Peak Forest onto the Macc you can join the T+M to go further south.
  20. When my hearing started to deteriorate, the first thing I noticed is that it became 'non directional' In other words although I could hear mainly ok, but couldn't tell if a voice or noise was behind me or in front. It's a nuisance when crossing the road as I have to be more careful as when hearing traffic it takes me more time to realise which direction it is coming from.
  21. I bought a pen type gas leak detector of the internet. It's a Habotest (made in China, where else?) and works fine. (I check it frequently by letting it 'sniff' a bit of gas from the cooker turning a burner on for a second or two) It cost about £7. I live about 15 minutes away from Elland, and if you would like to borrow it, send me a PM.

  23. That has been like that for at least two years, probably longer. The temporary lock landing has scaffold poles sticking out at just the right height to break your windows. When you get into the lock there is a sign telling you to use the side that isn't collapsing, but it is difficult to access so I use the collapsing side. Welcome to boating shite.🐸
  24. Am a missing something here? Loads of gobbledegook about batteries, alternators etc. Wouldn't the simplest answer to having hot water without running the engine, is to fit an instant hot water gas heater.
