  1. Or the opposite....The Thousand Yard Stare Where you let your expressionless gaze linger fleetingly on their face as it sweeps across them to focus on the horizon
  2. I think one of the difficulties is keeping to the thin lines between openness, confidentiality and secrecy. There is a need for confidentiality i.e. initial dealings between mods and members do not need to be public. Every mod request or decision does not need to be publicised. But if a member persists in rule breaking at what stage is that confidentiality put aside? And to what degree? Agreed - but how do the mods keep keep that tolerance consistant? One solution requiring no judgement and therefore easy and quick to administer is to have a zero tolerance policy. But it will not be long before accusations of heavy handed authoritarianism are made On the other hand tolerance is difficult to apply consistantly. If it is not consistant (i.e. the mods are trying to make judgements on a case by case basis) then they are open to accusations of unfairness and inconsistancy
  3. That's very interesting! And a beautiful shape. It has a butty type helm so I wonder if it was towed from the canal sides using the rings at the sides. There is also a linked ring from the bottom of the front post. I'm pretty sure it is a wooden boat Edited to add A quick google produced this "The third boat to be given a new home is the Ice Breaker Middlewich, which would have been pulled by as many as 20 horses, with strong, brave men on board rocking the boat until the ice smashed. It was built more than 100 years ago and is made of timber, with an iron-plated hull to protect her from the ice." From here
  4. I know. I could only learn it by watching it being demostrated in slow time I was being mischievous
  5. The secret was to take the running end, pass it over and around the standing part in a half hitch, pull tight so the hitch tightens to the body, then pull the running end away from the body. This will form your loop with the rabbit coming out of the hole in one motion. then you just finish it off and the knot has been tied tight to the body. Got that?
  6. Well yes Cheese is a wonderful thing so "blessed be the cheesemakers" is exactly right

  9. I am sorry to see Lady Muck go too. Especially in these circumstances. I think I joined the forum in about 07 and if I remember rightly LM was a moderator then Now that means that, given the the way the mods workload is described by FadeToScarlet in his post 112, that the pressure on the mods has just increased again. So the forum has had a description of the workload on the mods closely followed by a description of the effect of that workload. I suggest that all you armchair experts who are so good at oh so politely insisting that you know exactly what is required from the mods, and exactly how they should acheive that, and by when it should be achieved, but have not actually tried to moderate CWDF so in reality have only a vague idea of what it is like..... .....just step back a bit and have a think about how having to read your constant demands, combined with having to deal with all the shit emanating from Thunderbox, really affects people, when you go on and on and on and.... With the best will in the world you might say your motives are good and no doubt you firmly believe that. I believe firmly that...but you are not bloody helping
  10. Yes. They had been asked to take their stuff off the grass
  11. Two threads were merged just now and I guess you tried to open one while that was happening
  12. Its a good point and well made Martin. Whole message in just three words, one repeated, It was remiss of me
  13. So is the front of the boat apparently
  14. I'll discuss anything you like down the pub. I like beer and I like company. But in my own local when people start coming out with racism, sexism, homophobia, and other [expletive deleted] loudly, and laughing while they do it, I'm afraid I leave. It spoils my beer and my enjoyment of the place. Come to think of it I haven't been in much this year. I've visited Thunderboat twice Phil, to see what's happening with reference to CWDF. Once not long after it was set up and once a few days ago On both occasions I saw the way thunderboaters talk about people, especially CWDF mods and in my opinion it was absolutely disgusting.
  15. Well I should imagine that my post 32 pretty clearly laid out "which side of the bed I lie on" but for the sake of clarity.... I have a great deal of sympathy for some of what Nicknorman says about the quality of forum moderation I have a great deal of sympathy for the way the mods here are limited in what they can say I see nothing wrong with forum members defending the mods on here since what they can say is very limited I absolutely abhor the way people from this site are discussed on Thunderboat. I absolutely detest the way people from Thunderboat rant and rave, stir each other up and pop back here to drop another grenade. But hey - its a free country Clear enough for you?
  16. It is a general statement of course but it is a true one because over on Thunderboat any member from here can say anything they like at any time. I was not accusing all members from here of fact distortion. I was saying that they can if they want to and some, no doubt, do exactly that. I have no idea why JohnV was banned because I have mostly been away from the forum from March till October. Therefore I can't comment other than to say that in my opinion he is a grand chap and I am disappointed that he is no longer here.
  17. Of course it is self imposed confidentiality. Would you want every specific detail of your dealings with mods available for minute examination to every forum member?
  18. I guess Daniel and his team are somewhat hampered by their confidentiality around discussing individual mod actions. So what is left behind is that they can't discuss the detail of individual mod actions or decisions. They can only discuss moderation in general terms Without the truth of decisions being in the open, and rightly so in my opinion, discussions about moderation on the open forum are open to assumption, speculation, and distortion by people who have agendas of their own to pursue. So forum members are free to assume, speculate, and distort, at will - but the mods have their hands tied behind their backs. However forum members from here are completely free to discuss mod decisions from here, over on Thunderboat. Ask yourself how often those reports back to Thunderboat are given with total honesty. Are those reports slanted, altered, distorted, to favour the person reporting back? You bet your sweet life they are! Hardly fair is it
