  1. Sometimes it's difficult to get internet access on the boat. I have been away for 8 days bringing it down from Crick to Rickmansworth. Making it in one piece as it was my maiden voyage was more important to me than checking forums. The problem was resolved with a phone call so I didn't check back here until today. I am sorry you feel that because I didn't respond promptly that you are reluctant to help a new boater disappoints me as I was led to believe that boaters are a friendly helpful bunch. Obviously there are exceptions. I did meet someone on the cut that recognised me from my boat and previously posting questions about it. I am sure the majority of boaters are more friendly like he was than the few. I promise I won't ask you personally for any advice as I now know that unless I respond withing your accepted time slot it will give you the hump.
  2. Apologies, been busy trying to get to where I needed to be, thanks for all the replies. I think as you suggested it was shallow water as it rectified itself when we got going. Did as you all suggested and that seems to be the conclusion. Thanks again and expect more daft questions. Mike

    Help

Made it to Tring from Yelvertoft without a hitch. Started boat this morning and when prop initially engages a slight graunching noise comes from prop shaft. Advice?
  4. Hi All, Taking delivery of my boat on 8th April and I intend to spent about 9 days bring it from Yelvertoft Marina to Rickmansworth. Any advice on locking, places to moor overnight, what to look out for, nice places to stop etc. It'll be my first ever time doing a trip like this so any help and advice appreciated. Thanks
  5. Hi All, I am in the process of buying my first narrowboat, 46ft and it has a really rubbish wood burner that I would like to rip out and put in a new bubble diesel stove. The little 4kw corner one. What I am struggling with is approximate costs for retro fitting one. Has anybody done this and what were the rough costs involved. I know it's really dependant on the boat etc, but I I am mainly wondering how much to budget. Not including the stove are we talking £500? £1,000 £2,000 etc. I don't currently have a dedicated diesel tank, just the main one. Any help appreciated.
  6. 46 ft cruiser, no 240 volt, dump through loo, isuzu 42 engine, Initially just for fun, not liveaboard, but will be cc'ing
  7. Dear All, Subject to the survey I am about to take delivery of my first narrowboat and I was wondering what I need to add to my shopping list. For example, I know I need more mooring pins as there are only 2 aboard. I know I need some kind additive for the dump through tank and a few more of the obvious things. But Can you guys help me put a list together for other essentials I need to hand whilst on board? Tools, consumables, spares etc. Thanks in advance
  8. Hi All, I am in the process of buying a boat from ABNB and would appreciate any recommendations for a majorly thorough surveyor. Also even though the boat has a current BSC valid until 2018 would you recommend a new one regardless at the time of buying? Thanks
  9. Worth going as a narrowboater???
  10. Hi All, I am putting together the sped list for a fit out and want to have a programmable/remote controlled heating system installed as well as the traditional burner. Does anyone have any recommendations on suitable systems suitable for a 57ft nb?/ Thanks,
  11. This just cropped up on the facebook london boaters page so I thought I'd share it here. Stolen boat from Meanwhile Gardens at Westbourne Park, london thought to be heading up Lea and Stort between Enfield and Cheshunt right now. Met Crime number 4230607/16 call police if spotted
  12. Thanks for the advice so far. Any more would be appreciated
  13. Hi All, Newbie here. I am looking to buy a narrowboat ealy next year and after about 6 months research, viewings, ponerings etc I have narrowed it down a bit but could do with some advice/input from the old guard. budget is around 30 - 40 K I want to live on it about 55 - 60ft As far as hulls are concerned I think I want to look at Mike Heywood, Mike Christian, Colecraft, R&W, Tyler Wilson (If affordable) because these are ones recommended and to be fair whenever I see a boat advertised that I like it seems to be one of these......any other suggestions welcome? Engine options? If I want to cc on it I am guessing I need to make sure it hasn't been kitted out just for Marina hook up use??? Is that correct? decent size water tank and a portaloo so I could chuck in a composting loo instead without ripping out a poo tank!! Also size of Battery bank/inverter etc. if I wanted to self sustain as a liveaboard? I will be getting a full survey. I know that in an ideal world I would like something a litte rough around the edges but with a very sound hull, engine and electrics, but I guess that's everones pipe dream and a rare find. Also looking at reputable brokers. Have spoken to ABNB and Rugby Boats as I know they are both well respected. i have been warned about a large one in the daventry area, but would seek advice as to any other reputable ones.....Great Haywood?? Braunston?? Any advice, suggestions etc? Any words of wisdom to a newbie? Thanks in advance. Mike
