  1. David Mack I have just put a new post up asking people for the name of the insurance company they use. Can I ask what insurance company you are insured with? Thanks in advance
  2. Hi What insurance companies are people using to insure their boat? Mine is Towergate I plan to ask for a quote to see if they are more competitive than Towergate. Thanks in advance
  3. My narrowboat is insured by Towergate. Currently insured for £33,000 which is the price we paid in 2017. My renewal premium has increased to £191 from last year's £127. I have asked them why and been informed that a lot of claims have been made causing all premiums to rise! Has other boat owners found this with their premiums? Personally insurance is a risk game. Risk to me: If I don't take it out and incurred a loss it comes out of my pocket. Risk to insurance company: if I take insurance out and I incurred a loss it comes out of the insurance company fund. Risk to insurance company: if I take out insurance and do not make a claim they have made a little money from my premium. Thanks in advance.
  4. CRT website showing a water tap between bridge 2 & 3. Is this on towpath side or non towpath? Non towpath I believe is private mooring at the turning point!
  5. All thanks for the update Building work on the old transhipment building. I understand it's going to be used as a community building
  6. Hi. We are following a couple vlogs on their narrowboat & narrowboat cafe. The latest episode was stopping at Marple. They said there was no services there! Is this correct? We left the High Peak and Macclesfield Canal in May 2022. In May 2022 I am sure there was a water point, alsan and toilet, waste bins at Marple junction facing 48 hour moorings. Have they been removed? Has the land been sold for housing ? Cheers Ps if you are interested the vlog is on YouTube, search Holly the cafe boat

  8. Hi. Last week Canal and River Trust recommend the following Facebook group 'Trentlink' For anyone looking at cruising the River Trent I highly recommend this group for information and advice. They have been recommended on this forum before for anchors. Hope this is helpful
  9. Hi, Does anyone have a link that lists all the canal festivals? If not how best to search for them? Thanks
  10. The toothbrush wouldn't work even at home. Sent it back to the manufacturer and they replaced it free of charge. Didn't tell them charged it on a boat. Hi Jen. Can you please post a link to the toothbrush that you are using? Thanks
  11. At home we use electric toothbrush ( battery operated ). In the past we have tried to charge one on the boat on 240 supply and it stopped working. I recently contacted the toothbrush manufacturer who said they cannot be charged via battery as per the boat. It some how damages the toothbrush. Is anyone using a battery operated toothbrush on there boat and charging it off the batteries? If so what is the make and model? Thanks

  13. Between Derwent Mouth Lock 1 and Shardlow Lock 2 - Trent & Mersey Canal CRT are saying they have had a dry start to the year. From memory I believe we had a very wet November and December 2022 and a wet January 2023. Is there a historical shortage of water to the area? If we have a dryish spring will they lock down the Trent and Mersey?
  14. Today I have learnt that Standedge Visitor Centre is being closed in 2023. I understand the reason given by CRT is they are loosing £350,000 per year at this centre. I am guessing some of the cost is staffing and heating. When I have been in the centre there isn't a lot of staff. I don't know if the few staff I saw were full-time or volunteers. Again when I have been there it hasn't been very cold outside and during daylight therefore I cannot comment on the heating and lighting. It would be good if CRT could be transparent and show the costs and losses associated with the information centre. Again I would ask CRT if the tunnel boats will be closed. Thanks
  15. This cruising season we have experienced mould growth inside our fabric cratch. I have spraying white vinegar on it to stop its growth. I am looking for something for next year cruise. Has anyone used the algae zapper on the inside of their cratch? Thanks

  17. I have small black mould spots in my catch. I have just sprayed with white vinegar and water at equal proportions it hasn't removed the mould just hoping it has killed it. Has anyone used wet and forget ? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wet-Forget-Mould-Lichen-Remover/dp/B0187LUYKY/ref=asc_df_B0187LUYKY/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=278656604071&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11102543318998980359&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006940&hvtargid=pla-468484009623&psc=1
  18. Re I doubt he had left the Pierpoint paddles up, Arthur if this was the case he would have appeared with his windlass to close the paddles.
  19. Hi I travelled off the Macclesfield Canal onto the Trent and Mersey Canal yesterday afternoon. There was plenty of water below Bosley locks onto the Trent. I commentated to my better half that there was lots of water going down the Trent and Mersey and it was a pity they could pipe it up into the Macclesfield above Bosley Locks. As we dropped into the pound below lock 52 we had to stay in the middle because it was down by around 450 mm / 18 inches or more. As we passed through Rode Heath there was plenty of boats moored on there sides. One boater said someone had drained a pound further down and CRT had taken water from this pound to enable stranded boats to move. We wanted to moor in Rode Heath but decided we would travel on to more water We moored around 100 metres above lock 57. At 05:15 ish when I was woken up the canal looked like a river in flood. The rest you know as above. It was locks 56 & 57 that had all paddles left open. Question: Is it right a boater can drain two pounds above the one he is in so he can move his boat? Is it vandalism to fully open all the lock paddles on two pounds and walk away? My thoughts are yes it is. I have spoken to CRT and made them aware of the boat owner who needed to move there boat at 05:00. I also phoned the police and reported the mindless vandalism which could have damaged the canal and closed the network.
