  1. I rarely use Amazon, no complaints. .Anyways, Ebay has a part completed kit Bluenose 2 kit at heavy discount which I thought I had bought today, but its no longer available, annoying cos if I messed up, I'd still have the materials and could start afresh to make a better job. This model making is quite intense, the more I watch Tom Lauria ( who builds museum quality), the more I realise this is not for the fainthearted, Tom is the Christian Willliams of model boat building.
  2. Hi, yes I pretty much know which model I want, its in the model shop in Leeds, which should have other goodies I might need advice on. I see a local model place seems to show dozens of boats online, just not what i want. I need to phone to make sure they are in stock, it would be easier if they could InPost to me, but thats a bit of a faff to be if they've never used it before. Its a whole new minefield to cross. The model boat business has standard or fast acting PVA, and also the ca glues come in fast, slow, sandable, hi viscocity, low viscosity. Ebay do sonething called Click snd Collect but not all vendors participate, and you dont find out until you are at Payment. Ive trawled pretty much all the local shops, most are closed today of course, but a lot of them now specialise with plastic stuff, Radio Control, and war games etc.
  3. I removed any hazardous things from my Amazon cart, leaving only a wooden boat model in a box, no knives or glues, but Amazon refused to send it other than to a house as far as i can see. I went to a different seller, Ebay, maybe he does not send glues due to H&S, that would explain why they are not on his website. I can buy some glues from local shops, but not the specialist glues. Ill end up going to Leeds or Halifax if i can identify an old fashioned model shop. Its a real pain to waste a day just to get a few tubes of glue and some tools.
  4. My CRX 65 is small compared to a domestic fridge, but its a quality build. If door is not closed properly and temp increasss, it flashes interior light to warn you.
  5. Ive got a small 12v fridge which can be used as a larder fridge by removing the icebox. It can get pretty cold as it is controlled by buttons not a thermostat as such. It was expensive (£700 on offer), but i think it was a decent buy 12v or 24v I have 550 w solar and have no probs six months of the year.
  6. The issue is the item. They won't send this model boat kit to an amazon locker. An amazon locker has a defined dimensin but the Counter just collect parcels in a corner till someone picks them up. As far as I can see.
  7. No, the Amazon Counter and the Amazon Hub get parcels from Amazon., they are small shops and post offices. I can get most stuff from Amazon, and collect it, but not model ships in a a box it seems. Local PO is not PostRestante I've abandoned Amazon and gone to Ebay for my ship model kit, problem is that the sellers only sell the kit but not the glues etc, even though they ey call themselves model sites. I can understand not posting knives, or even saws, but not glues.
  8. I am trying to get a parcel sent to me, Amazon won't sent the item to their Counters. So I thought I'd try Ebay, obvio6sly need a different location, I know EVRI do some sort of service, but ive no idea how to get the stuff sent to me. Im not far from a DHL, i think, , but again I'm not clear how to get items sent. The Inpost site assumes I know what they do, but I don't. I lost the one and only item I sent there, no refund.

  10. One asks to be a constituent in the area with which you have a connection. My brother lives near Leeds. Re the NHS : I was once moored right outside a marina, and the health centre had no problem registering me at the marina (oops) and am now registered there. Ive never seen them. If i need something i walk in to a local practice and ask to register as a temp. I had to make it clear that was the system, as they were not taking permanent patients. Im pretty healthy.
  11. Not sure you would get marine mortgage on a narrowboat. The criteria are , as always, are you a good risk, eg good credit record, good steady income etc, etc. That's life.
  12. Those chairs look a bit hard , maybe some nice flowery cushions would help, lol
  13. I bought larger panels when I moved out of the marina, as cc livesboard, using the existing frame. With more thought I'd have gone for the @Blackrose solution, making sure they looked good, and were the most efficient panels per square metre. I sold the original solar kit to a couple in the boatyard (for £65) who were en route to France on a cruiser, picking up work as they went, quite an adventure.... Buy an extra battery, ban hairdryers and curling tongs....
  14. Foam insulation was in use when my boat was built, in 1999, essentially its a professional job, there is no condensation and only in the hottest weather do I need to moor under trees. There are other methods which may be successfull, including insulation boards such as Celotex. Every boat is unique in so many ways, its not easy to generalise. I have a boat which has both portholes and windows, even with window curtains closed, it is noticeably cooler in summer in the porthole area. I did not consider the advantage when I bought the boat. I have also added insulation fabric to the curtain lining, this helps in winter and in summer, the curtains are closed quite frequently, for privacy.
  15. Is it wood with a grain that needs enhancing, in which case sandpaper. Or do you want to have a nice gloss colour?
  16. I take a very relaxed view to boating, of course I"m retired and liveaboard, so no problem to change my plans around stopages which are planned. In general the navigation suthority has to do the best it can with the resources it has. There will always be water resource problems on tbe Rchdale, there will slways be unplanned stopages on the navigations regardless of who is running the organisation.
  17. I dont know anything about yellow cards or one month rules, in my mind anyone who buys a cc licence should be capable of navigating or expect to do so fairly soon. There will be plenty of boaters who apply for help via the UK benefit system, but i think think they might be living in a marina, and should have a Residentisl Mooring. Sorry i havent read all the long posts by OP. Philosophy is barely relevant on this forum, which is nearly .always about boating

    Best buys

What are your the best boating buys, 1) under a fiver 2) under £50 3) under £500 Answers on a postcard please... 1) Battery operated fly swat £2.99 2) North Face waterproof jacket from charity shop £10 3) A modern single mattress constructed with ventilated base A single means i can rotate it in the confines of the boat and It is very comfortable. Mattressesonline (Skipton Bed and Sofa Coy) £300, the guys removed my old double fitted the new one, costs included delivery and disposal, all drama free. Apologies for puting this in build blogs, i suppose it should be in general boating, but its not boat specific either.
  22. 1) have a red LED interior lighting permanrntly in the engine room to ensure your night vision is not destroyed (in case you break down while travelling at night). 2) keep a few torches handy. 3) build tbe bed adjacent to the loo area. 4) composting toilets are not practical for most people. I keep a spray bottle of diluted blue and pink for flushing, as my Excelence piston flush loo longer flushes 5) i have a fan in the loo which turns on for seversl minutes then turns off, its connected to the light switch. Closing the door should help. My best smoke alarm has a light, it is above the cooker and it picks on smoking oil, but not irrationally, it has a push function which turns it off . Its a Fireangel.
  23. Copper grease, silicon grease, plumbers grease, or beef dripping?
  24. You would be best advised to find somewhere else to spout your venom.
