  1. I will happily do an eletonic version of the drop test, now called 'Load Test. There are loads off reasons why an alternator doesnt perform well, overheating would be my guess. I would be annoyed if I had to sit in a boat, with the engine running all day long.
  2. Is your alternator set up for charging Li-on ? A battery cell, is a battery cell, series, parrallel, you can increase amps, or volts, but you can never increase power. if the cells are movable, you can make it what you want. If your alternator isnt setup for Li-on, then you will have a 'Thermal Incident'
  3. British Marine certified Electrician and Electronics installer,

If you want it on your boat, I will get it done.

Located (Stuck ) on the Macclesfield, with access to a boat on the Grand Union.

  4. +1 to rgreg, we did that section a few months ago, didn't really see anywhere I thought unsafe to Moore, we moored opposite the aldi, near water tower IIRC, on way in to Chester, approx halfway between Chester and Ellesmere Port and in Chester TC, no issues at either place, a nice journey. Enjoy
  5. Is Sonny a manager ? He is an employee of Peel, I spent 6 months on Bridgewater at Castlefield, never had an issue, never met Sonny. Bridgewater canal homepage is a good visit, as is the advice on the website.
  6. Just going through north gate now. All good
  7. Lock 6 is now shut as well due to fallen trees, went over Northgate locks yesterday ( road ) hopefully over the next couple of days I will be able to go down and have a proper look.
  8. Ok a three year old thread. My boat is probably the '97 for sale, number 58 of 62, before Ken died of cancer in 2000. The steel and welding is very good, has an outward Stern, not as pronounced as a Dutch barge. Handles great.
  9. Last I saw, it was due to reopen on the 24th May, we had to change our plans. No real problem, it happens. Cant confirm anything that gigoguy said, Peel holding are into developement of land, I do not know of any land owner that isn't, however I very much doubt that they will shut the Leigh branch. I have been wrong in the past and will be in the future.
  10. Yes please keep us posted, we all have differing opinions, I am also wondering why a diesel will not start. What gearbox do you have ? Spoke to a few on the cut, heard of them falling off, much rattling, but not heard of siezing. Good luck anyway and hope it is not to serious.
  11. Not read all messages, personaally I slow down for any moored boat, surprised me this weekend how many owned boats did not give a flying fick. When attempting to tell one individual to slow down, he put his hand to ear, then cut the engine to idle in able to hear, cruiser club flag happily flying, so I gather from that experience, that you should only slow down when passing a cruising club, or permanent mooring, not a designated 48 hour mooring. Funny thing about this is it was an approach to a narrow bridge, followed immediately by a busy junction, yet the amount of boaters that slowed down was poor. We are all in the same boat so to speak, we are never going to get any where fast, so show a bit of respect for others, treat others the way you would like to be treated. Not difficult is it ? All boaters know what happens when an inconsiderate person doesnt bother slowing down.
  12. That's the problem Jenny, I am not sure, in fact I am swaying with the I am sure it is not. However I will check over the engine, I am in there daily. Your suggestions are good, thanks. The Tacho only goes to 3k, pretty sure I have the 4800rpm XLD, not he 2800rpm XLD, However, this does make me wonder!
  13. Could be for Google, it was the first result, but yeah should have checked the date
  14. Great topic, cleaning and painting our engine bay a little at a tme, easiest bits first looking for more important bits as I go. I have greasy areas to deal with next, they are not to bad, but the cotton waste is a good idea ( got a greenie for that ), I have disposable nappies a tip given buy another boater, thanks. We had a problem with water getting into the bilge when it rained, this has now been solved engine bay dry upon return, still gets a little in whilst in use. Picture attached is starboard side, white canister is the rad bleed off against bulkhead, any ideas how to clean between engine front and bulkhead ( which runs top of photo to bottom ) in front of engine to the Port side ? I am thinking steam cleaning. The engine could do with a clean and thought this would be the best solution. Edit: Link not working for me.
  15. That is a shame, but then again fairly easily attackedfrom the banks, there was always armed personnell on all decks.
  16. Hi Jen, Thanks for your reply, however mine is slightly different. Attached photo of complete rear.

  18. Haha, So what you are saying is no running around, with buckets of water soaking any who dare approach? Or unsuspecting sunbathers, that didn't approach, frying eggs on the deck, rowing competitions, walk along the deck with bare feet competitions ?

  20. I was also thnking G = Generator, wiring diagram not the best. I will put this on hold until I can have a chat with a friend next week, I will take the Tacho with me. I am pretty sure now that this Tacho is not fit for purpose, a different one will have to be acquired.
  21. Thanks for your reply, it isn't urgent so will do a bit more research, I am aware of adjustments, such as number of coin etc. Which I think the back of the Tacho has to come of, which as it as much use as a chocolate fire guard at the moment then I have no problems with doing. Can't remember what forum I read about soldering a new terminal onto, I think YBW, maybe the terminal is folded over.
  22. Hi All, I have a ford 1.8xld with Bosch alternator, also the boat has a smith industries tacho, which has never been connected. I have searched and found links from other sites, as I understand it the Tacho is wired to ground and to the 'W' terminal of the alternator. See pics. As you can see from the alternator picture, the 'W' terminal appears to be missing, I am assuming that I will have to connect my own terminal her, probably by soldering. Is this correct ? The second picture is from the back of the Tacho. Assuming this is the wiring diagram, single ind is a single alternator setup, dual ind, for a dual alternator setup. So if I am reading correctly, 'W' connector from alternator, to pin 1 of Tacho, pin 2 of Tacho to Ground. And now if I wanted to connect the second Alternator, then the same for pins 3 and 4 ? If any one can just confirm or deny, been a while ( 18 years ) since working on this type of equipment.
  23. Ahh I remember the Gulli Gulli man, forgotten until mentioned on here. When I went through it was an opportunity to wash the aircraft etc., not been through since 1997 though, not sure what it is like now.
