In most cases there shouldn't be double posts, it should merge them. If it doesn't, please kindly provide examples and I will take a look. Note that if using cellular network connectivity (4G/5G) there is often a greater chance that packets will be lost and re-sent to the server. This is standard behaviour for the TCP/IP protocol and happens automatically in the background between the client/server - but can also cause unexpected outcomes like the one mentioned. However if for any reason you try to post the same content twice within a very short timeframe by clicking the submit button within your browser, it will also provide the error message shown in your screenshot.

There's also affiliate advertising schemes, e.g. Google Adsense. The idea is the website implements some code which points to Google's servers while creating a "placeholder" for the ad on the website. Google then control the ads. I don't know what the cost per click looks like these days, but you're probably right. - Doubt it's what it used to be! The main benefit of using such advertising programme is that it's a low-touch operation given there's no need to deal with advertisers directly and it's entirely automated. However, control over the type of ads displayed is extremely limited. This could result in ugly banners or irrelevant ads etc etc. - not good. I have used this previously on other forums I helped maintain but have no intention of recommending/suggesting it here. It would probably sink like an anchor and we'd need a complaints department! 🙃

That is often the case, some payment gateways also require monthly/annual fees to be paid by the "merchant" in addition to a transaction fee.
-
That's more one for @DHutch but from my observation - we have been able to do what we do without resorting to ads and for the benefit of those who use Canal World.

Thanks all for the donations received thus far, we're really grateful as it will help us to continue doing what we're doing while being 100% ad-free. Please keep them coming. Nigel will no doubt share more information about the donations received as part of his next financial summary. Thanks Adrian. Had a quick look, last one was July 2023. Time flies! If you decide to donate, I will likely need to fix mod permissions after but will get to it quickly. I will look into what happened with the reminders, thanks for flagging. As mentioned PayPal do allow payments without having to create an account. Appreciate they try to encourage the creation of an account, but it is possible to skip this with a few clicks. It has been a while but when I last checked, the fees we incur via PayPal are less than what we would incur via many alternatives. Plus PayPal integrate seamlessly & securely with the forum software we use. - not all payment gateways provide us with this level of integration. I can only really comment from a technical capacity though - @BEngo & @DHutch - Would be good to get your thoughts on this also. Canal World has been committed to provide an ad-free experience, I believe from day one. @DHutch has honoured this for the benefit of our members and visitors alike. Funding through donations works but sometimes we do need to call for support to ensure it continues to do so.

Good evening, As you may know, Canal World relies entirely on the support of our dedicated members. However, recent increases in operating costs have meant that our current donations are falling short of covering our monthly expenses. For more details on our financial situation, please refer to Nigel's most recent report here. Our operating expenses primarily involve technical infrastructure. Canal World is hosted powerful servers, ensuring we provide a fast and reliable service while remaining completely ad-free! Unfortunately, this setup comes with costs that fluctuate based on usage, much like utility bills. Therefore, we would greatly appreciate any extra donations from our valued members. To contribute via PayPal, simply click the "Donate" button at the top right of the page or click here. All donations will be reinvested into the site, helping us maintain our beloved community for years to come. As a small token of our gratitude, donors will receive a star next to their forum name. Please click here to donate today! Thank you Rich

Can't find a way to update profile details

More profile options become available when a user moves from the "New Member" group to "Member", this happens once a member reaches 10 posts. I'd recommend checking again following the guidance from DHutch as you're no longer in the New Member group. It prevents spammers (or worse) from signing up and putting dodgy links in their profiles which could potentially fall off the radar. -
This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.

Following a significant spam attack 1-2 years ago, there's restrictions in place preventing new members from sending large number of private messages. The measures prevent this from happening and these are based on a criteria, one of which is post counts. (I'm not going to disclose it in full for obvious reasons) By making it difficult for spammers to artificially inflate their post count as to "meet" the criteria and thus circumvent the limitation, we are preventing such misuse. While it might seem unlikely, trivial or otherwise unwarranted; It's important to note we faced this exact situation previously, during which time a significant volume of emails were indirectly sent by the perpetrators. - Although nothing malicious was sent, we simply can't let that happen again and as such measures have been put in place to prevent it. As noted, many forums disallow "double posting" (in this context) entirely or impose time restrictions instead, (e.g. Wait x minutes before posting again" - We don't do this, so I hope this is seen as a compromise, taking into account the above scenario.
-
This functionality serves two purposes: First and foremost, it prevents spammers from circumventing anti-spam measures Secondly and less importantly; It prevents "double posting" in the context of posting two or more posts consecutively. Rather than frustrate members by disallowing it or impose time limits (like many forums do), it merges the content instead. - A half way house so to speak. This is most likely attributed to the the poor signal. Ultimately if you don't have enough bandwidth for data to travel to/from CWDF, it will cause such issues. My recommendation is to only click "Submit reply" once, even if it appears as though it's not doing anything. Clicking on it two or more times may "queue" multiple requests to CWDF and eventually when the data does submit, you end up with content being duplicated and then subsequently merged by the forum system. - If we didn't have the auto-merge functionality, you'd likely end up with multiple duplicated posts instead, which of course would be no better in this scenario.

I appreciate that is your experience though this is also somewhat misleading. There's two different types of cannabis, Indica and Sativa and many different sub-strains falling within those categories. The latter of which (Sativa) is known to induce paranoia for some users while the former can actually relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression and help with a variety of health conditions when used as prescribed. Since 2018, cannabis has been prescribed by specialist doctors to treat many conditions including those you mentioned, but they're unlikely to prescribe Sativa dominant strains for the conditions you mentioned as they will likeky exacerbate the symptoms. It is important to note this distinction and not tarnish all forms of cannabis with the same brush especially given that it has been legal in the UK for over half a decade when prescribed by a specialist health professional.

No problem, it was probably the browser versions rather than Windows per se. In terms of why you couldn't access the site, it was likely due to how older web browsers handle re-directs from http to https.
-
I have made a tweak this end. Is it possible to try again?
-
No not down. I don't mean to state the obvious but you would not be able to post this if it were. What error messages/codes do you get? Can you check if you are using https? We don't allow non https traffic. Also try clearing caches/check alternative browser etc Also, is your phone connected to same network as your Windows computers? No

They just allow the forum software to keep you notified of any updates without having to be signed in / actively browse CWDF. I find it useful as it may often prompt me to login to reply to something in between other commitments. It's similar to email notifications only that it's more prompt. I can't see anything wrong this end, likely an issue with either browser / cache or browser plugin (ublock / adblock etc etc) I recommend the following to help isolate the issue: Clear cache Check for browser plugins like adblock or ublock. If present, disable it for this site as a test Test in another browser, e.g. Chrome or Firefox - does the issue occur on those also?
-
It looks like you may be using older version of Chrome. Is it possible to update it to latest version and let me know if issue remains?
-
Are you using incognito mode or similar?

We have not made any changes to the layout at all this year. There are big changes yet to come in the next major update for Invision but it's too early to comment on those, only that they're on the horizon, I suspect within the next 12-18 months.

I believe this is what they have planned for the M5 bridge: Source: https://www.cotswoldcanals.net/phase_1b It does seem to exaggerate the amount of headroom available though when compared to the photo I took. The restoration has been ongoing since the 1970s, long before the CRT and their financial woes, though that in itself is another debate entirely. As mentioned, I don't think there's any plans or suggestions for the Stroud Water Navigation to be operated or maintained by the CRT. It's still not entirely clear to me how ongoing funding will be achieved. I am guessing there will be a separate boat licence fee / tariff of sorts for using the waterway?

I just thought I'd share a few photos which I took over the last few weeks showing recent progress of the restoration of the Stroud Water Navigation, specifically the section between Pike Lock and John Robinson (Westfield) Lock. I believe the Waterways Recovery Group recently visited to dredge out much of the section between the two locks mentioned. It's looking a lot better. I also included a photo of the M5 bridge where the canal will eventually run underneath. There's no tangible progress here other than recent planning permission to commence the works. View from Pike Bridge looking west in the direction of John Robinson (Westfield) Lock: Another view looking west in the direction of John Robinson (Westfield) Lock: Recent dredging of the section looking east towards Pike Bridge: Recent dredging of the section looking east towards a "Dock" in the direction of Pike Bridge. Not sure why they call it a dock as it doesn't resemble one? View of John Robinson (Westfield) Lock. Progress has been slow but incremental: A view of the M5 bridge where the canal will need to traverse underneath. My dog was contemplating how this would be achieved.

Your browser does not trust the certificate for this site or more specifically the certificate authority. However, there is a valid certificate installed which should be suitable for our requirements. It looks like you're using Chrome? Is it possible to confirm and also the version? Does the same issue occur if you try another browser? Determining Chrome version on Android Open the Chrome App. Navigate to the 3-dots in the upper-right corner. Choose Settings and scroll down to the About Chrome section. The current version of Chrome will display at the top (See Figure 3). Figure 3 (Android): Also and as an aside; I am not sure I'd recommend using Incognito mode when browsing CWDF. CWDF needs to make use of browser cookies to work properly. Incognito mode can interfere with this but I'm not suggesting that's the issue in this case.
