  1. Keep an open mind on size, here’s a nice little boat which I could easily live on. With the benefit of a shorter boat they are easier single handed(if you are) cheaper licence and far easier to find moorings for. Have a look you might like and it’s up North at Thorne/Doncaster. https://www.boroughbridgemarina.com/motorboat/yorkshire-boatbuilder-40-widebeam/4599
  2. The best thing to do, as has been said, is if you can afford to buy a decent second hand widebeam do that. I used to see loads of blokes a few years ago who bought a Liverpool/Collingwood Widebeam sailaway for £40K thinking they were going to fit it out, then sell it a year later for £140K. Guess what? it never ever happened. They ended up looking crap or they sold on as an unfinished project. Just buy a widebeam that fits the size of the area your in and enjoy it. Save your time, the hassle and stress and money(as you say the cost of materials is going up all the time) and if your circumstances change or you don’t like it, just sell it. With all the new regulations regarding self build boats you could be stuck with a white elephant if your life turns for the worse or for the better and you need to get rid quickly. Buy second hand, there’s lots around and just go and enjoy the canals.
  3. And far better them most of the Young Vloggers 👴🏻
  4. And Cruising the Cut has put an offer in for “Lazy Days” from Narrowboat Experience and if rumour is correct in the Vloggers world, they’re buying “Perseverance” off Minimalist, once the renovation’s finished and Minimalist are waiting for “Silverfox” to come back on the market once the new owners realise the Vlogs are not real life on the Cut. They’re hoping to get it for a bargain price of £60K. The mad world of Vloggers and Bloggers.
  5. Enjoy and hope the weather’s nice for yous 🐶
  6. That’s for the Marina to sort, but I always paid the price that the pump said and what I remember I’ve always paid the price what it said on the pump. As I say the time mentioned, the pump said £79 and I paid £100, because they said they couldn’t calibrate it⛽️ Have a couple and you won’t feel as bad🥧🥧
  7. Yes probably calibrated the best they could, but still showed £79 on pump not the £100 they charged. As I say I knew they would not rip me off, but a total stranger passing on a boat could argue they would only pay what the pump shows.
  8. I image a lot aren’t even calibrated properly. Got some once and asked for £100 worth, the pump went to £79, then the filler said that’s it £100. He then explained they lost the programme software for the pump to be re-calibrated. I knew the guy quite well and knew he wouldn’t rip me off, but if I was a total stranger it might of been different ⛽️
  9. With the overplating ins and outs. Did your boat sell?
  10. No problem, Mine is fully residential, I think a lot of it has to do with your contents cover, mine is £10K and it’s this what adds to cost. I have never claimed in 13 year and hopefully never will, but the higher contents insurance gives me more peace of mind when I leave the boat unattended.
  11. I doubt location makes a difference, I have quotes every year on line and they’re all roughly the same, they start off low then with add on’s all roughly equal out. Who are you with and Is this your first year with them? Even if you have a quick fill in below, it’s higher then what has bee stated on here. https://www.craftinsure.com/narrowboat-insurance
  12. So you did one trip from London to Llangollen did it take the 42 weeks you were out cruising? You don’t cruise much with your diesel costs. Your insurance is too low for a £40000K boat fully comp livaboard. I would still say my figures are more for my world and lifestyle then obviously yours. Have a good weekend on the water👍
  13. Yes I think everything will be going up. I suspect electric as of today. @doratheexplorer could be spending more on boating this year, like myself and everyone else.
  14. I would say they are more realistic, with full time Marina Moorings. You don’t cruise much you say 6 hours a week, less then an hour a day is more suited to a continuous moorer then someone that cruises, obviously you have full time work which makes cruising difficult, I take it your a CCer and only in a Marina for the winter? Diesel now £1.25 plus per litre according to a running thread. Last time I had a 13Kg Calor for £30 was about 10 years ago, the price Calor recommend now is about £38, I imagine this will be going up. Just had my BSS £180 same guy last 12 years used to be £160. Insurance obviously depends on the value of boat and how much contents cover your have, your £120 must reflect your boat value and contents or your only covered 3rd party. Hopefully this will help the OP with different people giving their examples of today’s cost, instead of people just guessing. who used to have a boat. No matter what figures we say, this year is going to be more expensive for everyone.
  15. Totally agree withe the Step stuff, what ship is that on your pic?
  16. Makes no sense, if you were born in 1955 how old were you when you had your Son/Daughter 12😂
  17. I take it your user name doesn’t reflect your lifestyle as I would say £200 a year on diesel is low, even if you don’t move but have Webasto type heating and use it. That’s not even a full tank with most Narrowboats and certainly not with current prices. Your Calor gas only equates approx to just over 2x bottles a year also low I would say for a full time livaboard. What size of boat are these figures for as all seam low for a normal 57/58ft Narrowboat? Current price for BSS more like £180.
  18. Obviously the price of diesel around London has been extortionate for the last few years then. Maybe I’ll not use as much diesel as I thought this year, as looks like I’ll be on tickover a lot of the time, with all the moored up boats along the canal living the dream, but can’t afford to put diesel in their boats to move. Joking aside, will it change people’s cruising range from their Marina(home base)and will people moor up for longer periods instead of moving?
  19. Just the one canoe though and a single person one at that😊 It’s always popular. As I say I don’t know if it’s on this year with the last few years being effected by Covid. I’ve always enjoyed mooring there, always quieter then the moorings more in the city by the Marina.
  20. It is one of the best spots in Nottingham, the only problem there was a group of new age/hippy/crap boats that seamed to travel together back and forth from here and the canal by Castle, drinking, smoking weed, if you’ve passed through you would of seen the boats. I don’t know if they’re still around. I know CaRT were trying to get rid. But generally a good quiet place to moor. They used to have a water festival there every year, so moorings were restricted when that was on. The Festival was always popular with boaters. That was before Covid. Maybe back on this year?
  21. Just a comparison to the basics: Moorings: £2500 Insurance: £275 License: £1150 BSS: £180 These are just the basic requirements, as has been said every boaters scenario is different. So hard to tell a Newbie the true costs, as a lot think it’s going to cost next to nothing. The above doesn’t include my diesel, gas or electric (24p per Kw on home mooring) engine service. The other thing is sometimes they don’t realise you have to pay for your mooring all year, even when your out for months cruising, if you don’t you loose it. Boating is not as cheap as the dreamers think.
  22. Agree, there’s so many variables and each boat and individual is different, which effects the yearly cost also location. In my area for residential moorings and all the CaRT paper requirements you would need £3500-£4500 a year not including your elect, gas, diesel and any maintenance😊
  23. Who runs those moorings above LimeKiln? Are they CaRT? Stopped on them a couple of year ago for a cuppa, there was another boat moored there that looked like it had been there for a while, but seen no signage or info. I’ve always liked stopping off in Leicester and never had any trouble, so can never understand why it gets such a bad press. As I say always seek local knowledge for the real facts about an area.
  24. The £2000 figure was originally quoted for maintenance by @MartynG for a year not anything else, not licence and insurance. Read what he said, then deduct your licence and insurance for your last 10 years as not maintenance are they, but requirements.
  25. Nice boat, where are you moored Doncaster????
