  1. I am sorry Duncan i missed this post. I only saw it because someone mentioned it on your query about going up the Trent. Of course this response might well be way way too late. If I couldn't get work done on my boat on the Ancholme i would consider Hull Marina and the 2 Goole marinas first. All are easier to get to than Thorne. If you are intending to get onto the main canal system anyway, I would probably go to Goole and then onwards, but of course Stanilands Marina at Thorne via Keadby is the other option. All the afore mentioned marinas have blacking facilities. As for stern gland packing and welding of mounts both can be done in the water where you are. Leaving the Ancholme is a daunting task, but not insurmountable. Get someone experienced to lend a hand. South Ferriby to Hull, Keadby, or Goole are only short trips, and very pleasant in the right weather, and correctly planned.
  2. I've just dug out my ships log book. We had come up the Humber from Spurn and locked in at South Ferriby and the River Ancholme for a couple of days before proceeding inland, ultimately to Nottingham. It was July, 2013. We turned North (to Port) along the bank to get around the island and onto the correct channel. We locked out of S. Ferribly at 1320. HW predicted at 1602. Passed Apex (Trent Falls) 1415 Keadby. 1515 W. Stockwith. 1638 Arrived Torksey. 1825 I must emphasise that we had up to date ABP Charts, we were always navigating on a rising tide, and had depth finder, vhf, etc. As already mentioned ships may well be maneuvering at the various wharves up the Trent at that state of the tide. They weren't that day, maybe it was a little early on the tide. We were always on the relevant VHF Channels and had contacted VTS. We passed some groups of narrowboats further up the Trent that had left Keadby and W.Stockwith so that confirmed to us we were right in our timings. We aren't a great deal faster than a narrowboat being heavy displacement. We have a 4ft draught.
  3. Some trying to come, but because no-one is leaving there is no room at the inn. ?
  4. I am quite surprised that there has not been more untying of ropes on the Goole visitor moorings now that restrictions on moving have been relaxed. It still has the same boats there that have been resident for months and some have been there for almost a year. I would say that 80% of the visitor moorings are taken by overstayers/continuous moorers. Perhaps some rules and laws are only for others. Outraged by the acts of other boaters while finding reasons they themselves don't need to comply, or adhere to.
  5. Yes it's the very same. The River Don was diverted by the Dutch, hence the name. The course of it altered from Stainforth to the Ouse.
  6. Another shot of Goole. Viking Marina is top left. On the left hand side of the canal is the Dog & Duck commercial moorings. Right hand side of the canal is the visitor moorings, adjacent to Goole Boathouse.
  7. Goole Boat House Marina. The Docks and River Ouse in the distance. The Aire & Calder Canal to the left, and the Dutch River (Don) to the right.
  8. Regarding the relay. Couldn't you use the existing cables to the relay and bigger supply cable from somewhere like a pump or whatever in that area?
  9. Maybe, but often right. However I don't have a horse in this race.
  10. I recommend going on Thunderboat and asking Tony Dunkley. I understand he's banned off here. He's mentioned this thread and I have to say he's not too impressed by the advice you're getting Ian. ?
  11. You can buy spare battery isolator keys or using the technical term "elephant ears". Look on ebay to see if they are the ones you mean.
  12. I've never done it. However there is a Pocklington Canal Amenity Society complete with website. The head of the society is Paul Waddington, owner of Goole Boat House Marina. I'm sure he would be delighted in giving you the latest information.
  13. I SWEAR I wasn't meaning you specifically Jo. I SWEAR that I was just generalising. Please don't send for the Old Bill.
  14. I might do exactly that. Start a thread with a title "Tales of the Tidals"
  15. What a trip that was Paul ! I giggle even now about it. Mark and Leeds Paul decided to go up the Erewash and got grief from a gang of youths who proceeded to lob a football net complete with posts into the lock they were trying to get through. Leeds Paul also decided that when you go for an all you can eat Chinese you can help yourself to ALL the chopsticks and take them home. I think that was the same trip Mark ran out of diesel in Keadby Lock ! I also breasted Leeds Paul down the Trent and into Keadby Lock because he'd got blocked fuel filters. Leeds Paul also was the one who broke down on the Tidal Trent and he threw his anchor over the side and his rope snapped. I could write a book, but honestly when I look back they were great times. You've also done your bit on the Tidal Trent. Rescuing that abandoned narrowboat between Gainsborough and West Stockwith.
  16. At 9 o'clock in the morning I know that if I start with the internet nowt gets done till dinnertime. Hence short but sweet. Besides I didn't think my answer would be relevant if I had done it in a 30ft boat. ?. Then again when did that prevent posters from joining in. Nudge Nudge Wink Wink ?. Having been cross examined further by the missus i think I may have perjured myself your excellency. I stand by the date even though she dissagrees, but the accompanying boat was something like 57ft your worshipfullness. So much for short and sweet. You plonker.
  17. I would guess that with fenders bow and stern i would have been over 61ft your honour. I don't remember taking the fenders off. We went in company with another narrowboat from our marina which I think was 50ft. It was summer 1998 mlud. I probably have photographic proof somewhere in hard copy format if necessary your lordship. I'm jesting with you just to be clear honest. ??
  18. Yes I've done it and shared the locks. Short but sweet. ?
  19. There are some people who shouldn't be using ropes at all if they moor within say 100 metres of anyone else. A padlock and chain would be a more appropriate set-up. What am I saying? ?. Even i who never upsets anyone (?) has one of them lockable plastic covered cables about 5 metres long for when mooring somewhere dodgy. Also, if I moor on say a diesel point outside a marine, or even adjacent to it for a couple of days, I would fully expect lines to be occasionally disturbed.
  20. Is it shutting ok but the catch is being difficult? If so that too is an easy adjustment job.
  21. We have one. The door just lifts off. Would washers help?
  22. Having read through the 698 responses to the question "Can we cruise again?" I would like to answer. Yes, a bit, but don't stay out.
  23. I don't think the marina put her there, maybe they suggested it to keep the peace. ?
