  1. I think house insurance is a bit different from boat insurance. We are with Navigation and General and what I said above is what they told me when I asked about increasing the value. Other companies may be different
  2. I wonder if in the event of a total payout an insurance company will accept a figure supplied by the owner. In our experience the boat could only be insured for what we paid for it until we got a professional revaluation as the price of boats had shot up. I know at the time several boat owners on here said the insurance company were happy to insure on the basis of what the owner said the value was but I do wonder how much they would actually pay out. Probably the market value and it will be up to them to say what that is.
  3. I know it happens but it is illegal for anyone to lift a sewer drain hole cover and put anything down it. Iain is usually pretty hot on legal things but this time I think he is wrong 🙂 . He is away driving the trip boat in Edinburgh so I can't ask him!
  4. I know you found that as they wouldn't serve you when you turned up as they were closing but we have always enjoyed our visit there. Nice and handy for a pint as you work the lock 🙂
  5. If the Elsan is not on mains sewerage and the tank is nearly full, the contents of a pump out could be enough to fill it and prevent it taking more input. I had thought this was why self pump outs were not allowed at certain Elsans.
  6. Delete ! If you unsubscribe it tells " them " that they have hit on a valid email address and they will keep bombarding you with emails trying to get more info on you

I get the opposite impression 🙂 that he is in a marina where he has to have a licence and doesn't think it is fair but for some reason he doesn't leave.

I seem to remember the discussion on here about unlicensed boats in marinas a few times before but I might be wrong 🙂

  11. Wow, there seems to be a lot wrong with the boat and the mentions of removing of surface paint etc possibly revealing holes in the hull worry me
  12. Yes, I would have done that if I had realised that the lock was going to be filled so quickly 😄. Now, I tend to do that as a matter of course in operated locks. Not going to have my arms pulled out of my sockets twice !
  13. Cromwell lock is a lot bigger than any on the Crinan ! You could probably get 3 narrow boats side by side and at least 4 end to end when the full length is being used. It wasn't us holding a boat on just the centre line ( with the guy standing on the roof !!) But I had great difficulty holding the bow rope to keep the boat from swinging out as the water coming into the lock was just beside our boat. The lock is usually operated quite gently but not in this case !
  14. But although the mooring provider you started with will be able to say you no longer moor there, he will have no idea if you moor elsewhere or not. Ok, C&RT,have seen you in a few places but that doesn't mean you don't have a mooring somewhere.
  15. I think when we get a reminder that our licence is due we have to say whether the information C&RT hold is correct or not. Part of what they hold is the name of your home mooring ,( if you have one ) and it is up to us to correct the info if it is wrong. I think we are also expected to change the C&RT info if it changes during the year- for example mooring, insurance etc.
  16. True, but often the cause of fire or sinking is investigated .
  17. I don't really know but I suspect that if an insurance claim is made the company might like to see that the relevant ( to the claim) bits of the BSS are being complied with.

  20. I should know better than give my own experience as, of course, I am wrong and you and the statistics know best.
  21. Nor me! I see a cyclist then check road room for passing and weigh up the situation but I never look at the cyclist and couldn't tell if they are wearing a helmet or not.
  22. This thread is an indication of how things have changed - for the better I think. I had ponies and I never had a bridle but rode with a rope halter ( I could still make one ! ), and didn't have a hat. It took me years to save up for a saddle so I rode bareback. I cycled to school almost two miles along a busy A road and never had a helmet. Went swimming in the upper reaches of the Clyde and never had water wings or life jacket. It's amazing I survived 😄
  23. Not so ! Our boat and others have had two pack applied over bitumen after pressure washing with a very high powered hose.
  24. Yes, you have to "think light" if walking on top of a Pat Buckle boat 🙂
  25. Pat Buckle was not renowned for using thick steel. Copperkins, also built by PB had wavy sides below the gunwale and I understand that it has had to be rebottomed
