  1. Thanks for all of your replies. Moominpapa: That's encouraging to hear. Paul C: only using two ipads, no app updates done or apps downloaded, no cloud activity of any breed. Jo & Ssscrudddy: only two ookla tests done - Honest!!! Lady Muck: i agree that the speed is higher than on 3 3g but the total data to load a page will be the same unless 3 use some compression that EE don't Lady Muck: tell me more about the Dan & Phil sims please. Wirren: I saw that and as a BT customer it looked attractive especially since BT use the EE network. Loddon: i wondered about that, they don't offer a data only sim and they don't offer a free/PAYG SIM to test it out either. Maybe I should try the connection using a 3g modem to see if restricting the data speed improves things.
  2. Evening all, I'd like to canvass opinion on EE data usage. For the last five years we have used 3 to provide us with our on board mobile broadband. We have the 15GB monthly contract for £15.98 and it has served us very well since we use an average of 300MB of data per day for email and internet. We might occasionally use YouTube but don't use it for tv or films. Our only complaint is that where we keep our boat, the connection speed is relatively slow, no more than 1Mbps. Checking the coverage map for EE showed that there should be a 4g signal in the area so I ordered a free sim to try it out. I had to top up the sim with £10 to get 1GB of data but once that was done, the result was astounding, speeds as high as 28 Mbps, almost as high as our home broadband connection! Unfortunately, our 1GB of data allowance lasted only five hours even though we didn't do anything different in our usage. All of the equipment is unchanged so I don't understand why the data use should be more than treble, it may be faster but the total amount required to load a web page is going to be the same regardless of the speed. A 15GB per month contract with EE is £20 per month which is more expensive than 3 but still acceptable given the speed and coverage however at the apparent rate of use we would need the 50GB per month package at £50 and that is definitely not acceptable. Does anyone else have a similar experience with EE? The set up that we have is a TP-LINK wireless router with a USB ZTE 4G modem with an external antenna.
  3. Hi, I know that your question was about the small areas but when it comes to the big areas, the only way to strip the paint is with a rotary scabbler which you can hire or buy. This tool takes every layer off in one go, even if you have non slip sanded paint. You could strip a narrowboat in less than two days back to bare metal. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgYuK6-ll3w
  4. It's no different to the old question regarding roads. Four cars arrive at a roundabout from four different directions at exactly the same time, who goes first?
  5. Every time we pass over the river Avon at Warwick on the G.U. I think that it would be such a good idea if we had a "Falkirk wheel" to drop us down on to the lower level, making the trip to Stratford and beyond rather easier than it is today. I think £150m to £200m should cover the build and the canalisation of the river and whilst that seems like a lot of money, it would be a fabulous tourist attraction in an area where tourists are already in abundance. All that is needed is some funding so how do we get it?
  6. Hi Cotswoldsman, glad you got it sorted out but I'm interested in how you got access to the logging information that CaRT have. Is it available online or do you have to ask for it from them?
  7. Can I help the discussion along with the comment that XR&D will build a boat with a Josher bow and a Slipper stern?
  8. Evening All, I'm planning on going into Coventry basin tomorrow and staying overnight. I've been a couple of times in the past but that was before the hire fleet arrived. So the question is, which side is for public moorings? Thanks in advance George
  9. If we removed all of the posts made by TDH which included sarcasm, smart alec remarks, deliberate misunderstandings, pedantic musings and argumentative remarks, his 23,000 plus score would be reduced to bugger all!
  10. Great piece of film, interesting to watch the method of closing the paddles on the lock after a few minutes!!!

  12. I understand the principle but not sure about fixing a desk fan to my bell end then setting fire to it.
  13. Hi, I would suggest that you use a reputable boatyard for the work for best results. Make sure that they use the genuine hexagrip, there are cheaper alternatives that are not really up to the job. The edges of the boards should be sealed to prevent moisture from being absorbed. The boards need to be positioned and located so that they do not slip around but there has to be a gap between and around them so that the deck can drain into the channels that support it. This is done by fixing some strips of hexagrip (edges sealed of course) to the underside of the boards in the appropriate positions. With respect, it's not really a 10 minute job, far from it if you want the job done properly. Hexagrip costs around £120 for an 8' x 4' sheet so you really want to make sure that you're not doing it again in a couple of years because the boards are warping and de-laminating.

  16. Hi, yes on the last boat I sprayed the brass mushroom vents with smooth black hammerite and that was very effective.
  17. Evening All! A couple of the chrome plated mushroom vents on our boat appear to have lost most of their chrome and I am going to replace them. Midland Chandlers sell them but they also sell an aluminium version. Chrome is £38. Aluminium is £20.65. I know that aluminium won't be as shiny as the chrome but I'm not bothered about that. The main thing is that unlike Chrome which is a coating, the aluminium is solid metal. Does anyone have experience of aluminium mushroom vents? Are there any pitfalls in fitting them, is it likely to be a false economy? Most important is durability, next is appearance, price is least important. Thanks in advance.
  18. The benefit of having a stainless steel shell is that by installing a flux capacitor you would be able to travel back to 1955. Getting up to 88 mph might be a problem I suppose.
