  1. Oxley Marine is still going, didn't know they built boats though.
  2. That's because it is in a massive engine bay with plenty of space to walk around to polish. If it was a proper boat then there would be more important things to be doing like boating along the canals rather than scrubbing an engine.
  3. ^^^That's what I do. Looks black then rather than the greyish colour the blacking goes.
  4. Becoming a proper boater now as moved on to conversations regarding toilets. You will be adding the pros and cons of pump out Vs cassette soon. Off the top of my head I can't think of where there is a pump out facility before you reach Stourport.
  5. I would be offering £30k cash with no survey if I thought it was the right boat and had no suspicions that the seller was trying to hide anything.
  6. Most of the crew seem to be steam enthusiasts rather than working boat enthusiasts so more interested in operating the steam engine than handling the boat. When I got to steer Adamant around Braunston parade it was a great experience but I did keep forgetting how many rings of the bell to change from ahead to astern but I didn't hit anything thankfully.
  7. Nice of them to do a bit of dredging in the marina entrance. Perhaps he forgot if it was one ding or two dings to go astern or maybe he was waiting for the steerer of Kildare to help him turn quicker but he had left the butty behind.
  8. I've used the Google Map my Walk app on a cheap Android tablet with GPS. Just have to remember to hit start recording when you set off. This records location along with speed and duration.
  9. The spread of locks between Autherley Junction and Stourport gives a good mixture of locking and cruising although often I prefer a good flight rather than being spaced out with a mile or so in between. As Captain Pegg said above the Bratch is an interesting flight of locks and you will have a mix of very rural and some new developments right on the canal side.
  10. That's a good bit of boating to get to Norbury and having to flush yourselves down the 21 as well. The CRT guys on the 21 are usually helpful, last time we came up we met him at the bottom lock about 7:30 and he opened nearly half the flight for us. I think they check the levels in the flight every morning so you probably saved them a bit of work.
  11. Carina is the butty moored by the Sea Life centre used as a bicycle workshop.
  12. Fantastic pictures, thanks for sharing Nick. Did you get one of Carina moored in the arm and also still being used as a place of work...?
  13. Doing the 21 and then heading up the Shroppie you should be able to make Wheaton Aston comfortably, there is a winding hole once you have passed through Wheaton Aston lock. After this the next winding hole is through bridge 25 (another 3 miles) or Norbury Junction which is another 4.5 miles from bridge 25.
  14. Sharing rings can lead to all sorts of trouble, if you do share you need to make sure you use suitable protection so as not to cause any damage.
  15. Boating at night is one that is often mentioned. I have a clause in my insurance that states I can't single hand at night but not that it isn't allowed.
  16. I think I'd just give up and go to the Tenth Lock instead.
  17. I'm not sure because only one and nine remain with two to eight being rebuilt as six instead of seven.
  18. Don't spend too long looking for the ninth lock on the Delph as there are only eight now.
  19. Only if somebody then loses the evidence that you've done it.
  20. When travelling on old working boats I spend most of the time standing on the gunnels and walking along them is the only way to get from the counter to the hold. I would suggest explaining to hirers the importance of knowing what to do if someone slips from the gunnel, knocking the engine out of gear and throwing a life ring near them, would be far more beneficial rather than suggesting it is illegal to do it.
  21. My Android tablet with chrome was fine this morning, just opened browser and was still signed in. I've not done anything different since signing in yesterday.
  22. Not a good question to ask as you may get some horror stories posted related to finding bodies when opening the weed hatch. The worst item I've found was a carrier bag which I presume contained the decomposed body of a cat judging by the tail I pulled out initially.
