  1. You wont be able to see the join! It has been built over by British Rail and recently by new housing, but the original section went 'inland' through what is now the marina at Concoform (where we keep Dabchick). There is a considerable amount of information available about the Barracks (Google Weedon Barracks history) including a 140-page detailed history relating to proposals to develop the site. There is a recently-developed (well, 10 years old) housing development at Cavalry Fields which abuts the Depot. Interestingly, this development mirrors much of the original architecture of the Depot. There were plans to have the National Fire Service Museum here, but those plans were recently abandoned. Much of the site is listed and I found a considerable number of links via Daventry district Council Planning Applications portal - too many to list here but gives you an idea!
  2. I joined and had the misfortune to break down - RCR attended and dealt with a broken cable, paid only for cable but also got a 'credit note' for the value if I needed to call again. Service time very good so I'd say take the offer. I have also done a weekend Course with them which gave me much more confidence to deal with issues myself!!
  3. Given the dubious history of this affair, can someone confirm that this is a true message from Phil Spencer?
  4. Plume of Feathers in the village centre - recently renovated and doing both food and ale very well! Heart of England is a chain but cheap and cheerful, Crossroads similar. Maltsters is an old-style pub with great ales. If you want fairly upmarket food -the Narrowboat at Stowe Hill (near Dominics at Rugby Boats!) Good Indian at Brinjol on A45 by Heart of England pub. Two Chinese takeaways as well! Give us a shout when you are near if you want company!
  5. They all do eventually, but mine has been run on red for 8 years to my knowledge and apart from service and one pump repair - no problems!

  7. You could try parking opposite the pub in Old Watling Street (signposted 'Access Only') between the crossroads and the pub - secluded and unobtrusive as long as you leave plenty of room for turning into the private road Brewhouse Lane.
  8. http://www.liveleak.com/ll_embed?f=4627a8984ac8 How about this then??
  9. It's been there for 8 years (and several removals for servicing) with absolutely no sign of burn.
  10. Mine is bolted to a wooden backboard, and there is no appreciable noise coming from it. Perhaps the reverberations of metal on metal are the cause?
  11. That looks like a cast-iron way to draw the attention of the enforcement teams - you know they like a challenge!!!
  12. Tell C&RT asap with exact location - they will know the owner's details! (or should do!!)
  13. Please remember they only open Friday to Monday at this time of year!!
  14. http://www.insidetheenvironmentagency.co.uk gives some interesting points!! Lots of sour grapes exhibited, but as they say - no smoke without fire!!

  16. Bettie Boo - Will make sure we plan to pass by the Lockgate Cafe over the course of a weekend then I take it, it's worth a stop? It is for us! Awesome breakfasts all day - plenty of regulars tells its own tale!!
  17. Bettie Boo - down the flight with no problems today! But beware - Lockgate Café at Whilton only opening Friday to Monday till the summer so keep the kettle on
  18. Currently moored just below top lock - they are operational. I'm moving south tomorrow.
  19. We bought an ex-Willow Wren boat which was only 6 years old and it has been great. Fitted our own stove and solar panels and modified it to suit ourselves. The hire companies cannot afford bad publicity or constant call-outs to hirers so do their best to keep them well sorted. follow the usual advice - survey/check history of work done/take someone with you/ask lots of questions/check everything and then haggle to suit your pocket. Many of them sell them through brokers like Rugby Boats. Trust the good ones and you shouldn't go wrong. Good luck with your search.
  20. Give us a shout when you are getting near Weedon.Tea, coffee, beer or more always available!
  21. Provided you obey all the medical rules and do the necessary exercises - no problem. Had mine done 5 years ago and can do just about anything a near-70yr-old can expect to be able to do. I was doing stairs within 36 hours and only had one stick after a week! Don't worry too much - leave jumping on and off for a couple of weeks at least, take it steady for a while then forget you had the op.

  23. Looks like its a piece coming up about a recurrent thread in these pages!! Mustn't pre-judge, of course!!
  24. The very worst that could happen is a polite (or not) refusal! There are hundreds of boats up for sale and you will find the one for yourself eventually. Stand by for more advice on surveys etc., but best of luck - be adventurous in your offers and see what happens!
