  1. Hi all. Many thanks for taking the time to reply and sharing your experiences. I would just like to say that I am not saying any dealer/broker is trying to rip me off with a dodgy survey. (before I get strung up) My main concern was, the dealer implying I did not need my own survey, as the survey I was shown is a hull survey only. Th boat in question seems well(over) engineered and has a built in large genny, that neither I or the broker could find. this is a gas free boat so electric is quite important, for heating and water and the like. So I am a little wary as to why you would take time to slip the boat, remedy arisings from hull survey but not have an internal/ full survey. This is a very large purchase for me, and I don't think I will be in a position to do it again if this one bites me. I know the buyer beware bit, just at the moment seems more like a used car dealers than boat broker. If that makes sense. cheers all Smudge
  2. Hi all. I had a good weekend looking for and at NBs. Without naming names, one brokerage informed me that they do their own survey to speed things up. (This is a big firm, not fly by night.) On a boat I am interested in, they had a Hull survey and it looked very good, the few points mentioned had been remedied. when i asked about a full survey they said I could ask their guy and he might do it cheaper as he has already done the hull. I was taught that if you want a survey you get it and pay it yourself. Am I being a bit retentive or is this a normal practice in brokerage world? I do like the boat but! I don't really want to spend 40k ish without being sure she is right. So I call upon you here to set me straight, (she is very nice) should I stay or should I go? cheers Smudge
  3. Ok I know I am not the sharpest tool in the box, but.... Ask who took the photo with todays time stamp they will know where it is.
  4. I will try this and see if it works. If not i will read up laters. Thanks for the replies guys n girls Woo hoo it worked
  5. Hi Star thanks for the reply. the one I have seen, seems to have a bow cabin area, A trad stern then ish 30ft accom area, then 10ft of cover area, then 8-10ft of bow. I didn't have a good look under the cover, but it did seem to go down into a well deck.
  6. Hi all. Had a great weekend poking round boats and found a top 4, that if they are still around in July then jackpot. The question I have is I saw a NB moored just down from the water point at the Wharf Inn Fenny Compton. Looked to be around 60ft, Trad stern and a black canvas canopy over ish 10ft area forward, green and cream color scheme. I do have a couple of pics but not sure if it's the right thing to post pics of someone else's boat. I was wondering if there is a particular style type/ name as this seems to be the just right one I am looking for. Any information on this type of boat or even this one, would be be very welcome. cheers all Smudge
  7. Doh, how could I forget Crick. Many thanks for the replies, getting all excited putting routes and notes together. Smudge
  8. Hi all. As the title says, I’m planning a weekend of boat shopping. I will be based near Fenny Compton. Please could anybody let me know of any smaller or lesser known locations, as these seem to be all I can find on the tinterweb. On my list so far are: Rugby Boats, Stowe Hill Whilton Marina Braunston Whilton @ Wigrams turn Should be a good 3 days of boat porn. Cheers Smudge
  9. Yes, I briefly toyed with this one. I was put off by the sold as seen clause, and the tarp over the forward edge of what would be the hold now living accom. Also it came up 2 months to early and is a bit far for a looksy, when I thought she was in Hull, I was ready for a drive over and a call to mister Lloyds. I would love to pick up something like this. Cheers Smudge
  10. Hi, At £2300ish plus fixing kits, does this compare with other systems? I have come across this system before while digging around, it just seems a tad pricey to me. I suppose if you get 10 years out of it then might work out ok. Cheers Smudge
  11. Hi all. With reference to op, I also remember being told around the late nineties and early noughties, when I was looking at having a shell built, not to use eastern European steel. I was informed that it failed to meet western standards along with the Chinese steel flat pack hulls that were just starting to come over. If I recall correctly this was about the time you could buy Polish narrow boats fully fitted for around 20k less than UK spec boats. I wondered if it was just UK builders spreading tales as they could not compete with the price. Since then a couple of years ago the MOD had a problem with a battle winning weapon, basically it kept failing when under intense use. On further investigation it was found that one single component, had the steel sourced from and eastern European mine,(we even managed to track down to which day and load it came out of the mine.) When this component was checked with the “super metal checker”, (metal not my department, I do bang stuff) we were told it had a similar consistency to an Aero bar, more bubble than metal. The blame was placed entirely on the eastern Euro supplier. So my only real experience with eastern metal is yes it is inferior, if sourced on the cheap ( i.e. by a government dept). And since the mid-nineties we have been chasing cheaper and cheaper deals, and sourcing from further a far for normal people. Cheers all Smudge
  12. I live 1 mile from litherland Tesco, my boys and I often cycle the canal route. It is a cracking run from Wigan. ring o bells is a very good stop over. cheers Smudge
  13. Hi all, as this is kind of about BW auction. Could I ask if anybody knows how or where BW sell of any sect 8 / seized boats? Either north of south. I popped into white bear, but was told that the place was now closed. (mooring marina still functioning) Cheers Smudge
  14. Sproz, PM sent. Cheers Smudge

  16. Hi, it'll be fine, just enjoy and chill. To be honest most stuff you hear about in places like this, very rarely happen in real life with normal people. Smudge
  17. Hi Alonso, I was on the western end of the L&L for a while, as long as you turn off the genny and power tools by dark-o-clock you will be fine mate. like a few have said, it is harder to keep working and not chatting. get it done and have a beer. look forward to seeing you about soon Smudge
  18. This is a serious question, before I get my head ripped off. What does a BW/Cart license purchase? Is it the right to occupy? ( I am under the impression, no) Is it the right to cruise? ( this now also seems a no) I suppose my question is, will there be a reduction in the fees due to a reduced service offered? When I by a can of pop I expect to be allowed to drink it. Car tax I expect to be allowed to drive ( if I can afford fuel). So what does my license fee actually purchase? feel free to inform me how wrong I am, I was just wondering what service I can expect for my money. Cheers all Smudge
  19. I know this does not really help BUT, I think I would have just knocked him out by now. Sorry if this goes against the love felt in the forum, now and again it just needs to be done. Hope it works out for you. I am looking at buying at the moment, I hope I meet a seller who is straight as you appear from this thread. cheers Smudge
  20. Very good post. Many thanks made me smile, please keep flying, I look forward to being buzzed. cheers smudge
  21. Cheers for the replies guys. I have waited about 13 years to get to this point, now it's just a bit scary but exciting as well. I will take you up on that Davey, cheers Happy cruising Smudge
  22. Within a small area you have Aqueduct Marina, Swanley Marina and Overwater Marina. All have professionally run brokerages. Many thanks for those, they will be included in the tour de cut next weekend. What are you looking to buy ? Plenty of brokerage in the midlands ! Any particular area you will be traveling to ? LOL now that is a question. I know what I think/thought I wanted. 57 - 62(ish) footer, trad stern, more port holes than hoppers, double bed and two single beds/ bunks (2 x soon to be teenage boys), Tug deck, (for small m/bike), multi fuel stove with thermo siphon for rads, at least one side hatch. Oh and all that for under 30k. I looked at a boat yesterday that nearly fitted the bill, but was a 50 footer and semi trad stern. I could move towards a semi but I think 50 is a tadge too small for what I am after. Then I looked at a 57ft half completed sail away, and I saw a lot of potential, but also a lot of work. so now I have confused myself, neither boat had what I thought i wanted but the failaway got my juices flowing. There are 2 boats on here that might fit the bill very well, but I am not in a position to buy till end of July, so don't want to mess anyone about with false hopes. Deans boat looks bang on. just have to see if it is still about in a few months. Cheers Smudge
  23. Hi all, I am looking for information on Brokers/boatyards in Cheshire area. I found a very friendly place at Wincham Wharf yesterday, with some great people in and around. (Many thanks for the warm welcome onto your homes, ) I am looking at showing 2 of the boats I saw to the better half next weekend. One of the guys asked "if had been up the road for a look?" but I could not manage to make out where he ment. So while I am in the area and have the boss booked for a full day I would like to "do" as many yards as possible. I know people are not able to comment on individual brokers, but any locations would be a great help. I intend to do a week or so in the midlands next month as I hope there might be a larger collection of yards / brokers down that way. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers all Smudge
  24. I think Star has it right. would be a good one for April 1st. All BOAT/CARAVAN/TENT OR REALLY LARGE SHEET THAT YOU COULD SLEEP UNDER OWNERS ARE TO PAY FULL + 50% LUXURY COUNCIL TAX. Just imagine all them Gin palaces on the south coast, hang on I might give London a call might solve the depression. Have fun all, enjoy the sunshine. cheers Smudge
  25. Hi again all. I was wondering if I could draw on the knowledge held here please? Does anybody know if there is any Narrow/Canal boat shows oop north, north west would be great. If not really north, which would be the closest to Liverpool? I am looking to show the better half around some boats, before we look at buying at the end of the year. It seems that there is doubt with water and stoppages what is going ahead and what isn't. We are hiring a Narrow boat called Tincan in June so that will be a great start for her, I would just like to surround her in the ambiance if you know what I mean. Cheers Smudge
