  1. I've been looking at the Phillips road atlas which has some bridge numbers on it. It shows a bridge 4 around the Daresbury area. Could they looking at bridge 4 to 6? That would certainly be a lot nearer Runcorn. Mal
  2. When we went up the Idle years ago we moored at Misson. We visited Haxey Quays by road last Autumn and they have created some long term moorings. You could probably get on those if you ask. Site has elsan disposal and water plus the pub by the bridge. It is a residential and touring caravan site with a large events field so you may have lots of company. Worksop and Retford Boat Club organise trips but they are strictly memebers only. Rachael, there are a number of bridges to negotiate, West Stockwith (near your favourite brewery), West Stockwith new sluice, Misterton Soss footbridge and Haxey Gate bridge on the A161 north of Misterton. I tried doing it from the gallery and from photobucket and got an arror message '..cannot use this extension on this board...' and gave up to try gain another day. p.s. I asked for PMs about how to post images so that a long expaination would not clog the thread up. Martin suceeded in this by posting a reply including a link to help elsewhere. Regards to all Mal

  6. OK I know the obvious answer, the dock but where's the evidence. I've spent some time recently walking through the docks and after I had watched Battlestone and Heather Rose depart, one of the lock keepers showed me how much turbulence there was in the lock floor when he refilled it. It really got a 'boil' on. (I would post a picture but can't figure out how to do it. Answers by Private Message please). Now I'm fine with under-floor filling but where is the water drawn off? Certainly not near the lock entrance because there were no eddies, elsewhere in the dock? The water towers are not involved as they are drinking supply infrastucture. Am I also correct to think that Southfield reservoir is the compensation supply for locking? The A&C doesn't need it because it is river-fed and we are on the bottom pound at Goole.

  9. Thanks Rachel, great pictures. I posted on Saturday that I was crossing the Trent on the M180 at about 1130 and saw three GRP sports cruisers in company heading north to Trent Falls. Question was 'Is it Naughty-Cal?' I think you have now answered the question.
  10. Thanks Martin LW Blacktoft was just before 1500hrs so there would be no need to rush as they normally anchor at Trent End and wait for flood up the Ouse.
  11. I was crossing the Trent on the M180 just after 1130 this morning and saw three GRP cruisers in company heading downstream towards Keadby. Was it who I think it was?
  12. Remember that there is always a delay of about two days from full moon (and new moon) before you get the highest spring levels. If you check a tide table Monday 07/05/2012 is predicted as highest for this phase. Could be various Bores and Aegres depending on fresh levels.
  13. In 1897 the Humber Estuary was the venue for a flotilla in celebration of 60 years of Queen Victoria’s reign. One Hundred and fifteen years later the communities of the Humber will again have a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of history by forming a flotilla of 60 vessels including merchantmen, pleasure craft, and heritage class boats in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. With the support of the Harbour Master Humber, Captain PJ Cowing, Mr Peter Hill Bridge Master Humber Bridge, Hessle Town Council, Barton upon Humber Town Council, North Ferriby Parish Council & South Ferriby Parish Council and the Rt Honourable Alan Johnson MP the Humber Diamond Jubilee Committee is coordinating the Humber Diamond Jubilee Flotilla. The parade of sail, will take place at approximately 18:00hrs on 4th June 2012, as part of the National Lighting of Beacons event. The sailing barge “Phyllis” a Registered Historic Vessel will be Flag Ship in the Humber’s own Queen’s Jubilee Flotilla. Responsible for the official representatives to the City of Hull, the towns of Hessle, Barton upon Humber and Brough together with the villages of South and North Ferriby, “Phyllis” will fly the standard of the Lord Mayor of Hull and Admiral of the Humber, together with those of the represented districts. It is a great honour for “Phyllis” to represent the maritime heritage of the Humber through this appointment and to be representing all the historic vessels in our region, many of which are sadly unable to attend the event. BOATERS!! The Humber Diamond Jubilee Committee are still requiring vessels to take part in the flotilla.   14. Update on Trevor the hairy lengthsman. Poor old Trevor was taken ill late last year word has it that it was diabetes with the usual associated circulation problems. Earlier this year we checked on his situation/whereabouts with his boss at BW and heard he was out of hospital and recovering under the care of his family. Latest news from Roger B the blogger from Worksop (more about him in a moment)Trevor was spotted in Worksop market a couple of days ago. He looks well, has a soft slipper thing on his left foot but is walking fine. Roger had his own health adventure on the Chessie in late March. He was dashing about taking pictures in the area near Morse Lock when he had a heart attack event. Medics were sent for and it was decided that because of terrain and access the best thing was an air evacuation. This occured and then the helicopter had to divert because of fog, so Roger end up in Leeds has a stent fitted to sort his problem and is then returned by road to Worksop. Beinga 400 a day photoman Roger has the presence of mind to give his camera to a lady bystander he knows and he got the event on film. roger's Blog

  18. Your dimension seem fine. When we were considering basing a broadbeam boat at Boroughbridge in the 1990's the only Northern waters 'out of gauge' proved to be the Chesterfield Canal. The Huddersfield Narrow would now have to be added to the list.
  19. The proposal that is currently in the news for Severn-Trent to sell water to Anglian is mainly by river transfer using the Trent. For years there has been the facility to extract from the Trent at Torksey to supplement the flows in the Fossdyke and Witham, that's what the little pump house on the end of the lock cut does. One of the many reasons given for the weed in the Witham last year was low flow due to little supplementary pumping. ST plan to pump water from boreholes under Birmingham to the river Tame. Gravity then takes over to the Trent and subsequently Torksey. Anglian them pump the same amount out at Torksey and run it down the Fossdyke and Witham to their extraction plant to supply north Lincolnshire.
  20. We were lucky enough to have a morning out with the mobile lockie and the BW Freigh Planner/Harbourmaster for the passage from Sprotborough to Eastwood about three weeks ago. Those skippers certainly know their job. 'Normal' lock hours are 0600 to 2100 on weekdays and 0600-1200 on Saturdays. That why she often moors below Sykehouse overnight, unless they have a night in Goole and then tootle up ready for the lock at 0600.

    I'm with Brian on this, if they ask when you're obviously over the check level, leave the lot on the check-out and leave. I suspect that a self-service till would ring for its nanny to come and press a button to confirm your age - same rule of walking applies.
  22. Hi Martin, The old Nicholson shows a swing bridge below the lock. So the modernization must have swallowed the old bridge and a replacement provided. As Magpie Patrick says it is not uncommon to have bridges over locks , Bardney, Naburn and Gardham lock on the Pocklington come to mind. Regards Mal
  23. Sorry Martin, Not sure of the history, I'll dig out the pre-modernization Nicholson's and see what they say. However when we used it in the early 1990's if you were on your own and had the right boat, you could put your boat in to a suitable point, fill or empty the chamber as required and then tootle out without messing with the bridge. Nowadays you have to have the bridge swung out of the way for the entire lock operation sequence.
  24. No make sure you top up at Thorne or A&C. We specifically checked this last month for the latest Richlow Guide to the SSYN. You can get calor gas in the basin.
  25. Another long-shot. You may be getting a stray electical supply to your stop-solenoid. Figure out how the engine stop arm works, so you can stop the engine by hand. Disconnect the supply to the stop-solenoid and then start and run and see what happens....
