  1. What if you are a genuine CC and don't have a land line address? Does the boat name get licensed?
  2. Are you afloat yet? I ask because we have a boat in build with them too (I think we are behind you) and there is not much progress.
  3. The Caldon is well worth a visit if you've got the time.
  4. We sent a lookout walking up ahead who got to the passing place and reported back that the coast was clear so off we went. A few minutes later our look out spotted the trip boat coming the other way and told them there was a boat coming (me) and they would have to wait. The trip boat driver told our lookout that they didn't care and carried on regardless into the narrows. Needles to say it was us that had to reverse out. The trip boat drivers should go on a "How to be nice to other canal users" course.
  5. 20 years ago I lived 50 yds up the road from the Fox. I never noticed a smell. Aeroplanes yes but never a smell.
  6. You should try the Lapworth bridge when it's got a foot of snow on it like it did when we came through last March. Right bu99er is a complete understatement!
  7. Confusing isn't it? I think people are Affected by the weather conditions. However the Effect of the weather conditions is that there are no trains to London Kings Cross.
  8. Harrison Ford is on the Graham Norton show at the moment and said he had a canal boat holiday where he didn't get recognised. Where did he go? Did anyone see him?
  9. We are moored in the basin just below Office Lock in Leeds city centre. We've been out for the night and returned to find the pound is well over a foot down maybe even 18 inches. Is this a normal occurrence for this location or should we be worried?
  10. Well, yes, but so would a leak from the cooker in the galley?
  11. Thanks for all the replies. We will have a multi fuel stove as our main source of heat in the winter. I'm thinking that we will go down the gas route. Next question: The Alde 3010 has dimensions of Height 310 × Length 490 × Depth 340 mm. Would it be ok to put it in the engine bay maybe on top of the swim if there is room?
  12. Thanks Nick. However I doubt that will be readily available canal side. We are at the early stages of having a boat built so we could get a second tank fitted but could just as easily have something like an Alde 3010 gas boiler fitted instead. My concern is that the cost of the gas would be more than white diesel.
  13. It's looking like we are going to have to pay road duty on diesel that gets used by the heating boiler. So might it then be cheaper to run a gas heating boiler instead of a diesel one?
  14. http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/10595228.Boat_sinks_in_the_River_Ouse_near_Museum_Gardens_in_York/?ref=mr My suspicion is that the river level rose and caused this. It is about time there were some floating pontoon visitor moorings in York.
  15. We've done Harecastle both ways. The ventilation fans create a head wind when going South to North so we prefered North to South going with the wind. But not much difference really.
  16. Ok, maybe 15' is an exaggeration but the board is now 7 stone blocks above the highest that the river ever gets. According to the Environment agency the highest ever level at this point is a touch over 5 meters above normal levels. http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/riverlevels/120701.aspx?stationId=8208 Only half of York? I think it would be most of the Vale of York! :-) .
  17. Maybe it is for trains but my point is that it has recently been moved about 15 feet up from it's previous location. If the water ever got up there the Ouse would be about 15 feet over the top of York's flood defences. The flood defences are built to about 17 feet above normal levels so to get a further 15 feet it would have to rain some!
  18. Definitely a flood board, but it used to be mounted on the little frame to the left of the white Network Rail sign,
  19. The flood indicator board has recently been moved on Scarborough Bridge over the Ouse in York. I hope we never get into the white let alone the red!

  21. Ok, so how many locations are there on the Grand Union that could be classed as "Opposite Tesco"? I can think of Bulls Bridge and Warwick. I didn't know about Leighton Buzzard. How many others?
  22. Thanks for all the replies. The builder is aware that this is the cooker we want him to fit. He was worried that there would be no fixing points on the cooker that would allow him anchor it. If there were none then he would maybe have to drill into its frame to create some and in so doing invalidate the warranty.
  23. Well done the helicopter pilot, that can't have been easy.
  24. We want to get this gas cooker http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/household-appliances/cooking/cookers/gas-cookers/zanussi-zcg550gwc-lpg-gas-cooker-white-19430570-pdt.html?gclid=CJ2n9qT31LcCFbMdtAod7UkAng&srcid=198&cmpid=ppc~gg~Household+Appliances~19430570&istCompanyId=bec25c7e-cbcd-460d-81d5-a25372d2e3d7&istItemId=xttrrqwtm&istBid=t&ef_id=SzdNVTZFeiQAAM0F:20130608165824:s#longDesc installed on our new NB. We like this one because it has a double oven and it's 550 mm wide. What are the BSS rules and regs on fitting free standing gas appliances in narrowboats?
