  1. Probably a blessing in disguise Starry, there are quite a lot of dogs there, some seem to be uncontrolable, they would only serve to stress the cats, although we would miss you! Samy the cat went for a swim tonight just below Common Lock, at Frazely. She was grumpy for a minute or two, but is now snooring her head off under the table! nipper
  2. Why use cheap chipboard at the start of a fit, especially when every thing else, including yourself will be bearing weight on it! Starting with "cheap" doesn't promise well for the rest of the fit! Please don't go to a diy shop like B&Q, go to a good quality timber suppliers that sell good stuff. Hope all goes well. Nipper
  3. Ange we didn't even see a tin can, honest! also, for those that are interested, we had a quiet night here at the basin, all on our own, although it is not secure at all, and what's this I have read about a Warden or Ranger?? There seems to be some sort of Market being set up now too! Nipper
  4. Ah! That will be Clare with the nice new trolly then!
  5. The cats will be fine, their problem is deciding on what tackticks to use on the dogs at Pillings Marina! All the best Stary
  6. To be honest, I've just come up the Coventry Arm and am at this minute in the basin. Can i ask what rubbish there on about? It all looks pretty clear to me, all the way from Hawksbury Junction, accept that there are lots of supermarket bags hung every where someone can hang em! Are they to take the place of litter bins? cus i suspect they will all be blown in the cut the next gust of wind we have!

  8. Same with mine! Problem sorted!
  9. Blimey! Mind you, some people have been accused of going to fast in his marina by Paul! . But to that much strikes me as a tad on the wilful side!! Now, I must chat to the wife to explain why she has to do the Kegworth deep again! Nipper
  10. Nope! still can't do it because of Foxtons restrictions! Back to plan 32b! May bump into you tommorow Ally. Happy days! Nipper
  11. Oh Goody! Does that mean I can now go to Braunston or is there something else stopping me turning right out of Pillings lock Marina tomorrow? And, will I be able to get back? My OSCM (on shore command module) wasn't looking forward to wrestling with the Kegworth Deep bottom gate again! What about Foxton? Nipper
  12. "I am afraid the real battery expert has left us" Where did the real expert go? Is he on Holiday? Nipper
  13. Oh well! At least there is some good then! I have to cut my lawn again before I come up on Friday, cus if i don't It'll be waist high when I return! As Ally said,"looks like the Trent and Mersey". Might try the Caldon again, I enjoyed it up there in June, but daylight hours may restrict me a little! Thanks for the input Nipper
  14. Blimey! Didn't realise it was that bad! Is it just the lack of rain, or is lack of maintenance a factor? Nipper
  15. Hiya Ally. Northwards it is then! But, now I'll have three problems when I get to the Trent lock area! Continue North on the Erewash, West on the Trent and Mersey or East down the Trent! Problems! Problems! But such nice ones! Thanks Ally Nipper
  16. Hi all. I'm off on Water Jester this coming Friday for a couple of weeks and realised I have not kept up to date on the water situation on the Leicester section of the Grand Union. But I imagine, that now it is the end of October, the water situation will probably have eased. What I really want to know is, if I turn right out of Pillings Lock Marina, can I get to the Welford Arm? or indeed as far as Braunston? or shall I turn left and head down the Sour as usual? Thanks Nipper
  17. Mmm! De-shelled using the one for me and one for the fridge technique, eat as you they become available, don't forget to share with the cat! This, i find, makes sure I have some in the fridge to squash and spread on hot buttered toast in the morning! Please note that all my crayfish have been caught accidentally!
  18. Starry, we can all feel your excitement, the lucky ones amongst us have been there and know what it is like to have your very own boat. Bottle is right, slow down and enjoy your first moments of ownership, there will be plenty of time to get all the stuff you will want later. To be honest, I would think that your boat would have some bits of running gear onboard, at least a couple of mooring warps and maybe some fenders. Why not wait till you get onboard to see what is actually there? The boat yard, perhaps, will let you have an old warp or two if there is none onboard. That goes for the fenders too, although I wouldn't worry too much about then till you gat to Braunston if there are none aboard. It is all to easy to spend out on stuff and then find out that you actually don't need it. Congratulations on your purchase and enjoy! Nipper
  19. Can't say it rings any bells with me either!
  20. In the good old days of sail. The gollywobbler was one of the last sails to set flying, but of the first sails to get taken down! Quite understandable really!!! Nipper
  21. In a sailing boat or narrowboat and any other boat for that matter, I'll always moor facing the strongest element, whether it be wind or tide! Using the engine, or sails to give you have far more control of your boat. Nipper
  22. Now I've had time to read about controllers on the smartguage site, it has made a lot more sense to me than the last time I read it! So, thanks for all your inputs! I'm not so impressed with the Sterling as I was a few days ago! In the meantime I'll carry on reading! Many thanks Nipper
  23. Hiya! Thanks Gibbo and all for your inputs. It was for a two alternator system I was thinking of, either my share boat or indeed my own narrowboat, if the woman who buying my house hurry's up with the dosh! I saw the exert on the Stirling Alternator to Battery charger in this link My link It is a little way in the program but it did catch my eye, so to speak. I'll look at the digital alternator controllers for now and see if that excites the rest of the syndicate, although, sorting out a charging system including a decent battery charger and a shore socket at both ends of the boat has helped! Nipper edited cus I'm a muppet! It does work now!
  24. Hi all! Can I ask the forums opinion of Sterling's Alternator to Battery charger?(I'll try and have a go at putting a link) http://sterling-power.com/products-altbatt.htm I am one who is not quite up to scratch in the electrical field, but the unit goes along way to addressing the cruising boaters time taken to replace the used battery power, and alternator paralleling and generators used to enhance the charging of battery banks would not be needed. We all now that running the engine to charge the battery bank takes a lot longer that a couple of hours. But if your cruising you may want to stay put for a few days. And running your engine or Genny is a bit antsocal at times. It it seems to me that using this Stirling equipment to charge at up to 5 times faster would go a long way to help. How would using this charger effect a domestic battery bank re over heating etc? Could the Smart Bank and Smart Gauge still be used beside this? Has anyone fitted one? What are your findings? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I've searched the forums and haven't found anything that relates to the Stirling Alternator to Battery charger! Nipper
