Radio Interference

Jeannette often has trouble sleeping so listens to a Walkman Radio in bed. She has been complaining about interference as if something is suddenly switched on as it gets light in the morning.

 

I've tracked it down to the Tracer MPPT 30A Solar Controller.

 

Any thoughts?

 

Main radio is DAB so no problems there.

have you checked all the connections are tight, if not they could be causing a frequency.

Buy Jeannette a little portable DAB?

I have done. Its a Roberts Sports DAB and it gets good reception despite being inside a steel cage but apparently not all MW programmes are on DAB.

Can you put the controller in a metal box, solidly connected to the hull? Ideally the wires into it need filtering as well, but the box alone may be enough.

Where you getting your sunshine from?

....and yes, sunshine you should be up, if listening to radio......tell the good lady there is excellent reception on the roof and she can take her quilt up with her.

How do you know it's the Tracer and not something else? Could be worth trying some clip on ferrites, have a look on Ebay.

I've tried using some clip on ferrites (bought from Ebay) but they ruined the line of my Y-Fronts!

Many years as an auto electrician has at least taught me how to track down such things.

First thing I'd check is that it's got a good earth. Any RF shielding / EMC management inside the unit will rely on it having a good solid earth. Ideally as short as possible and made of braid.
