Neil TNC Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 (edited) I suppose I should have put up the url of the TNC page highlighting the (prolonged - now apart from the majority of the woodwork, virtually self fit out!) build of Barge Maurice A at Riversdale Barge, Co Leitrim, ROI in this section... C u soon? D It will be finished and totally trialed by the time of the Olympics, 'cause I aint gonna be boating over here during the Olympics...Linda is starting to wonder if this will be the London Olympics! We just spent TWO WEEKS!* coming back home from a stay in Saltisford Arm. Fantastic weather all the time we were out, and all credit to BW, no stoppages due to water shortages.(and that included Drotwich and most of the BCN) I trust Julian will be organising an Xmas miniGiG/banter???I hope to be able to fit this in round barge building activities, as at present Riversdale do not need their hand held, as much woodwork to do. As for coming to play, ANYONE will be welcome, seeing as most of the TNC crew are tired of waiting for it to be finished. At least you won't get wet/cold as most of the activity will be in the heated double glazed wheelhouse. TWO WEEKS!* Linda had her mum with us, MIL is wheelchair bound...I was bored out of my tree, not more than 4 hours boating a day. I was still suffering from over doing it in Ireland, so rested bu&&ered knee.
blackrose Posted October 30, 2011 Report Posted October 30, 2011 Who's building this barge Neil? I had a look at your blog but I didn't see.
Neil TNC Posted July 27, 2012 Author Report Posted July 27, 2012 Who's building this barge Neil? I had a look at your blog but I didn't see. Sorry for the long time replying, but I have only just seen this as I have been rather out of it...building barges! MA is my design, realised into plate kit by Nick Branson. The steel (Thyssen, German) was supplied by Statendam in Holland. The plate kit was cut out at Piper's. The kit was assembled at Riversdale, Ballinamore on the Shannon-Erne Waterway in the ROI and the fit out was by me and a couple of Poles, Yan (most of woodwork)and Swarvik (extra fabrication and heavy duty engineering), at Riversdale. MA is now complete, with trials completed...some 2.5 years out of my life! Final pictures at end of "Finals" page Linky
Robbo Posted July 28, 2012 Report Posted July 28, 2012 Nice boat, currently nicking ideas from ya :-) BTW. I think your tiptop fenders are on the wrong way around (well upside down) in the above photo, they look correct on your starboard side. - Am I just been picky?
GUMPY Posted July 28, 2012 Report Posted July 28, 2012 If you are going to be really picky TT fenders should be suspended from a single point..........
bargemast Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 If you are going to be really picky TT fenders should be suspended from a single point.......... Why ??? Peter.
Robbo Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 Why ??? They will be pushed out of the way instead of getting caught.
Neil TNC Posted August 4, 2012 Author Report Posted August 4, 2012 Why ??? Peter. Because this is the way working boats use them? In our brief forays on the French waterways we saw about 60% of the working barges using the single rope hanging method, but many not

bargemast Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 (edited) Because this is the way working boats use them? That's why I asked: "Why ???", as I've always had them attached at both ends on my working barges, they are a bit too expensive to loose, if the one rope would break. Peter. What happened to the traditional piece of softwood? Cheap enough not to be paranoid about losing one. Does nobody use it any more? Those newfangled rubbery things didn't exist when I was boating on the Continent. I've no doubt that they have more give than a piece of wood, though. Tim

Tim Yes, they are still about What a great looking boat...I must under no circumstance let Jan see that... The fit out is stunning to. Naaagh...it was done by a complete amateur! I am sure that Riversdale would be only too pleased to copy MA....but you would still be looking at the price of a decent SH Sagar...barge prices seem to be tumbling at the moment. Methinks Julian T knew just the time to sell a barge Edited August 4, 2012 by Neil Arlidge
